Big THANK YOU to those of you filling in the match list! <3

Looking at the top 5 program matches...clearly where you go to med school matters > agree but there's also selection involved. People who get into top med schools have extraordinary life stories/experiences/research that got them into those schools that will likely come up again for derm applications.

Favorite co-applicants on the trail?

#2876Mar 23

There was mention of kindness from an Indian dude from UChicago, Asian dude from Yale and a cosmetics? guy from Penn

Mar 23
0

<where did these people match?

Mar 23
0

I think UChicago and Yale guys are at Harvard

Mar 23

why are people only putting schools in the match list instead of names! I wanna know where all you lovely people I met on the trail matched!!

#2875Mar 23

nun ya biness<<umm rude much? it will be public knowledge soon anyway and will be everyones business then.

Mar 23
0

this is all sort of sad if you look at prior year derm sheets or current year sheets of other specialties they are very filled out (including names)....

Mar 23
0

or people may be filling it out from match lists that have already been posted publicly..? Sad either way! <I added info to it this morning when it was refilled, and now it's gone again...?

Mar 23
0

yeah, I noticed someone also keeps deleting UT Austin's smh

Mar 23
0

I'm also hugely in favor of removing the AOA section from the match list. That's weirdly personal and not necessary. I think it should just be name, school, intern year. This is to see where people are not to try to figure out your match odds based on extremely limited info.

Mar 23
0

agree re: removing the AOA column. If people want AOA data they can look at charting the outcomes data

Mar 23
0

Disagree, you don't have to fill it if you don't want to, and if other people want to fill it out then they can - I don't at all see why we have to remove columns that have been part of this list for years. Having things like research year and PhD etc can help future applicants who are trying to understand what kind of applicants match. I know for sure it helped me.

Mar 23
0

Same. I think the column is totally fine. Not sure if I agree that it is weirdly personal either, at least for those who are AOA, considering that many schools, including mine, publicly announce who was inducted. It is a big accomplishment, and I think many programs like to see it/place an emphasis on it, among other things, so it is definitely helpful to know!

I just saw NM took 4 derm residents. I thought they only had 2 spots?

#2874Mar 23

With COVID-19 hitting hard across the states, I just want to congratulate the true winner of the Derm lottery - whoever matched at West Virginia!

#2873Mar 23

i dont get it? NYC has the most cases<<except ppl who matched to NY programs wont start until next year so not really

Mar 23
0

they mean WV has the least cases

Mar 23
0

important correction: lowest number of "confirmed" cases. they didn't have a functioning plan for COVID19 testing for the longest time

Mar 23
0

LMFAO << WV has a shitload of cases, they just didn't have testing for the longest time and it's still super crappy. We are all screwed ,some areas are just testing better than others

thank you to those who have started restoring the match list! please dont delete again guys, its very rude.

#2872Mar 23

I think it must be an accident. Who would delete it on purpose?

Mar 23
0

It wasn't an accident. Someone went on a rampage and replaced everything with UPenn and incorrect names

Mar 23
0

< the same people who was spamming the sheet with UPenn stuff

Mar 23

LOL

Dermatology offered 478 positions, achieving a fill rate of 98.1%.

#2871Mar 23

real talk did any people from top med schools go unmatched?

#2870Mar 23

"I think so, I met some top school applicants and several had 1-2 less matches on their school match list than they told me people had applied"

Mar 23
0

-- For the record these schools all had 8+ people applying

Mar 23
0

Not sure if other schools do this, but at mine, some people can opt out of being put on the public match list. There were a few people this year who matched derm but weren't listed.<why would you opt out of your name being put on the match list? you should be proud for having matched derm, unless you werent happy with where you matched.

Mar 23
0

This is a very unnecessary topic to discuss. Let us be a little more respectful! Imagine how they must be feeling and what do we have to gain by discussing this?

dont know who actually matched there but NYU list is crazy good, congrats guys! will say im a little salty i didnt get it but happy for everyone nonetheless

#2869Mar 23

< where is it?, oh you're basing this off of the schools that the matched applicants are from

Mar 23
0

Yeah prolly wouldn't say it's a great list just because they're coming from top schools, though I'm sure they were all great applicants and good fits for NYU. I suppose the fact that people make that assumption though is why home program prestige seems to matter.<<yea school rank 100% percent matters in derm sadly. thats why i tell all premeds that wanna do compeittive specialties to go to the higher ranked school

Mar 23
0

Congrats NYU! x2

omg the match list is cleared out wtf - some of yall are hella crazy/salty/insane<why would anyone do that...i really dont get it x2

#2868Mar 23

Can y'all just refill it out x100000000

Mar 23

< per my friend who matched into plastics, the list on their spreadsheet is almost 100% filled if anyone was looking for inspiration :)

Mar 23

Wow, much better than us :(

Interview impression tab is locked... why?

#2867Mar 23

Advice to future applicants. Take the research year. x7<eh i dont think its absolutely necessary

#2866Mar 23

Highly recommend research year if you are coming from lower ranked school/school without derm department

Mar 23
0

Why?

Mar 23
0

Derm will only continue to get more competitive, research year will help set you apart and afford more time to develop tighter connections with faculty

Mar 23
0

I did a RY and just want to say that make sure it's the right fit/opportunity. I saw a lot of situations where ppl take advantage of medical students plan and simple, so don't do it just to do it bc you think it's important to your app strategy.

Mar 23
0

x1000 I took one this year at a top program that wasn't my home program and it was NOT ideal, so choose wisely

Mar 23
0

< The whole point of a RY in PDs minds is to exploit desperate people for free/ almost free labor << Not true

Mar 23

Depends on the mentor but this is very often true, sadly

serious question... programs want to know my long white coat size by April 1st. Everything is closed at my school until April 3rd. Anyway to guess what size would work best? I'm normally a small but is It universal sizing?? I can't go try anything on. Also cN we use funds for supplies like stethoscopes to buy figs?

#2865Mar 23

< wow there are people out there dying and others unmatched still and then there is you... << that’s a perfectly valid question? x3

Mar 23
0

Probably do your normal size.

Mar 23
0

Yes, usually scrubs count as work supplies.

There's lots of talk about the PPE shortage. Anyone know what our rights are as interns if we are told to see patients without N95s? Attendings and nurses can threaten to quit, but we're kinda stuck. x2 I'm very worried about this as well and want to know our rights

#2864Mar 23

As a current intern I can tell you that you probably can't do much. The CDC says surgical masks are okay unless you're doing aerosolizing procedures such as bronch or RT doing nebs etc. Given that those are the current guidelines in the US you can't really argue a different way. It's unfortunate because it seems like the guidelines were mainly changed here BECAUSE of the PPE shortages and not because it's what's right/actually protective. Sorry friends, it's a scary time.
