Has anyone matched after getting no away offers

#36103d ago

A plurality of candidates match at home program. None of those candidates 'needed' to do an away. Aways are very helpful but you can match w/o

3d ago
0

people match wihout doing a single away alll the time

2d ago
0

but is this people who are choosing not to do any aways or those not getting offers?

2d ago
0

usually schools like harvard where they discourage it

2d ago
0

so NOT people who applied and just didnt get offers :(

2d ago
0

no aways and matched. however i had to really show people my personality during interviews etc. and couldn't bank on people already knowing what i was about

2d ago
0

how did you go about doing that effectively? and did you apply to aways or chose not to?

2d ago
0

I chose not to apply to aways until july bc wasn't convinced on it being worth the money. I got multiple interviews with 1 away (in nov) and i didn't match at the away. I could've just saved my money for a month (although still happy no matter what, hindsight 20/20). I also got rejected from like 19 aways and only got 1 and got an interview at a place that rejected my away app. YOU WILL BE OK

2d ago
0

that is actually so helpful to hear :') and im happy it all worked out for you!

2d ago

Matched at my top choice without doing an away -- you will be just fine!! Just nail your interviews.

1d ago

this is going to be an annoying answer, I know. But i just kept reminding myself to be authentic - I talked ALOT to my boyfriend everyday about experiences that I had in the past and during my RY and current topics in healthcare, in hindsight I realized that these "rant sessions" were really just practice interviews to me. I chose to not do aways, but I wish I had done at least one away because I missed out on a few institutions that I really liked. But ended up matching at an institution I probably would have picked over the others anyway.

#36075d ago

they didn't take residents last year because they changed thier hospital affiliation but they did take 2 this year

is there any stats on what step 3 score i should aim for as a derm reapp

#3602Apr 5

Don't submit your step 3 score

Apr 5
0

why??

6d ago

it just seems like a joke for the amount of RY year posts that are for post PGY1. Like there are just taking advantage of this bottle neck effect of derm reapps. and so many are 2 year long and this is even after rejecting ppl who already did an RY as a student. Thus far its USF, Dallas texas, Goodman derm, mt sinae. like wth

#3601Apr 5

how difficult is it to get these RYs compared to the post MS3 ones?

Apr 5
0

BOO

Apr 5
1

DON'T LET THEM NORMALIZE RYS!!! DO NOT (i fear they've been normalized looking at the match list)

5d ago
0

I have been told by multiple attendings that RYs are basically the way these day or some combination of MPH, MBA, MD-PhD...kind of difficult to compete against folks that have taken extra time.

great networking but also a good time to explore your profressional interests outside of clinical - volunteering, leadership, advocacy, tech

Why is Jefferson so low on the doximity reputation list? Is it a bad program/bad training?> no idea about doximity but its an excellent well respected program

Why is Jefferson so low on the doximity reputation list? Is it a bad program/bad training?> no idea about doximity but its an excellent well respected program> another reason why Doximity is bs

Apr 4

I think doximity is sollid for the top 10-15 ish programs but after that it kinda goes downhill and has inaccurate info. For example it says CCF has like 20 residents but actually there are 12. It's entirely based on program reputation so I think after the top 10-15 it's kinda a wash.

Apr 4
0

I do think Jeffersons reputation has not been as solid the past 5-10 yrs (lost many faculty), but definitely a decade or so ago it was thought of as one of the best

Apr 4

rankings are overrated just go where youll be most happy

What was that Doctorly Games thing at AAD I keep seeing in social media? Did some of the resident really win $25,000!?

#3598Apr 4

Yes a Harvard resident got $25K. It's like Jeopardy run by Muneeb Shah

6d ago
0

dang so the jeopardy during the interview social was recruitment for their aad jeopardy team huh

6d ago

So the resident won $25,000 !? It wasnt like grant money for the residency or something like that?

6d ago

Any low step score matched applicants that can provide any words of encouragement/advice?

#3597Apr 4

Matched this cycle at an away with high 240s, no research year. put your head down, grind and work hard at your aways. at the end of the day, programs want someone they can work with personality wise, show up early, stay late, ask to help in other clinics if yours ends, etc. do well on the end of rotation exam (many derm aways have this) to "prove" you can hang derm knowledge wise, express interest in your aways, tell them you want to go there, do well in your interview, high 240s isnt a death sentence but it wont get you random interviews. you will need to bank on home and aways, do as many aways as possible

Apr 4
0

Some people matched with failed step 1 this year

Apr 4
0

it's kind of crazy that we think a high 240s on step is still considered a low score esp in any other field it'd be fine

Apr 4
0

where?

Apr 4

where?> midwest school (dont want to out the person)
