What do you guys think about research fellows getting interview invites at their programs?, What programs are fellow "friendly", at least to give them an interview opportunity?

#695Mar 21

Northwestern

Smaller departments are more likely to rank and match their own fellows. Much easier to get to know the leadership of the department and show them that you'd be good to work with

Last call to participate in this survey - closes end of week. Thank you so much to the 21 (!!) who answered the survey already. Feel free to answer completley anonymously, but if you want to be placed in the $50 amazon gift card pool, we leave a spot to drop your email so we can send you the gift card. No follow up spam mailing lists etc. Just good QI data so we can improve the match for future derm generations!

Is making a derm twitter a necessary component to matching now ? < I dont think so. < definitely not, know several "big" derm twitter people who didn't match. Used to be a way bigger thing, now I feel like it might hurt you< It exposes you too much. you have to take the good with the bad. like the previous poster said, there were quite a few dermtwitter people who didn't match. Since they were so public, all eyes were on them for match week. < I do not think 99% of PD and important faculty care at all about twitter. It's just another social media app that can help you make connections but will most likely be neutral in the actual application process.

I don't think it's necessary to have a DermTwitter account in order to match into Derm. It's probably best for those who don't have a home derm program at all so they need to network outside of their med school. It can also backfire on you in terms of leaving you too "exposed." But I agree with the person who said there are good and bad aspects of having one. I don't know when DermTwitter really got off the ground, but I feel like it may have helped in the first several years (if you were a borderline applicant), but now it's sort of just blah. I thought the DIGA website and DIGA podcasts & webinars were much more helpful. Compared to previous years I feel like DermTwitter students this year were a lot less obnoxious, so I really felt bad for those who didn't match on the first try.

Are there any programs that require 4 letters of recommendation (vs. 3)?

This should go without saying but if you notice that a program has mainly, if not all, DO Derm residents, don't waste your money as an allopathic MD student in ERAS fees for those programs. The merger doesn't mean anything in terms of equal consideration of your application.

#684Mar 21

as a recently matched DO resident, I can say this is largely true. Most DO programs won't take MD candidates. Maybe this will change in the future, but not true now. May also not be true if you have a strong tie to the program. Also, many DO programs are now run by MD PDs and May start taking more MDs, such as Honor Health, LVHN, St. Joe's, etc. For a list of these "DO" programs, see this spreadsheet: Formerly AOA Dermatology Residencies: Audition Rotation Guide

Does this 50/50 lecture & clinic based derm elective count as rotating through your home derm program, or no?

Mar 21

technically you do rotate but half the rotation is didactics and assignments, after July we're able to sign up for our formal home rotations though < I would just prepare well in advance for your away rotation for July and then do your home program rotation the next month.

< lmao i got invited to both DO places and harvard/stanford e.t.c < what are the "both DO" places you are referring to.

Thoughts on doing an away before home rotation? My home program doesn't allow us to rotate in July aside from this 50/50 lecture/clinic based derm elective. Should i do the away first in this case or take this elective?

Does anyone have a list of which programs fall into which geographic regions? < it's by state, so you should automatically know based on what state the program is in. Just search "ERAS region" on Google Images and you'll see.
