2017-2018 Derm
1 viewingAn un-deletable backup of Dermatology Applicant Spreadsheet, 2017-2018 . Last synced Mar 23.
Gee you guys are awfully quiet. Link your friends so we can tell J.K. I'm still rolling.
How many programs is everyone applying to?
around 60 or so
I'm doing 60 as well
All of them. Seriously. Ideally, I only want to do this process once and I'm not taking any chances.
all except california and out of reach ivy/top 20
also doing pretty much all of them minus a couple
For the person who wrote "out of reach ivy/top 20", I'm guessing you're going by the Doximity list of Derm programs arranged by reputation?
That and perhaps known pompous faculty?| 117 programs
How do you make the line break like that?
on mac, it's the key right under delete in upper right
On a PC, it's the key next to the brackets, which has the backslash (press shift to get the vertical line) |
Hi guys, was waiting for someone to have the courage to manage the spreadsheet, you the real MVP x10
Agreed. Whoever is in charge of this spreadsheet, thank you so much for doing it.
Oh you're welcome.
No YOU'RE welcome. x2
Cleared stats tab. Please reference old spreadsheets for match stats prior to this cycle, even you persistent IMGs that finally got in. We know you're proud, we are too, kudos for your persistence.
x 2
This should not give hope to IMGs, it's a miserable process for US allo 250+ applicants that check off all boxes
It's not to "give hope" or otherwise. It's to show stats it's literally how the tab works.
Yes, young padawan gunner. You win the anonymous spreadsheet cell today but keep in mind your statement translates well into your interview ability and is exactly what faculty are looking for to rank you lower than what you are on paper. <- true story, med students should never correct residents or faculty unless a gross standard of care has been breached
Aww, sweetie, I don't need your clairvoyance in judging my future interviewing skills based on the shade I throw at you.
Anyone watching AGT?
Anyone watching Tosh?
I'm watching AGT! I thought I was the only one into that show. None of my friends are. LOL.
So does Simon actually like anal?
I feel like I need a tutorial for this thing --- why are some of the interview invites green already?
y'all haven't been getting interview invites yet?
:(
It's copied from last year's spreadsheet. Nothing happens at all until after September 15 and not for a long while after that bc Derm programs are going to take their own time when it comes to going thru your ERAS application before doling out interviews.
Last year derm invites didnt really start to go out till first week of November
Which programs require different or supplemental personal statments?
there was a pretty good list on last year's spreadsheet. I'll see if I can find it. --> pasted from last year -->| Thank!
Is this list complete?
When are we supposed to complete the supplemental stuff by?
I would do it ASAP.
I know Boston does bigly, any others? Did Mayo email you regarding the supplement?
ohio state
MAYO DOES
BU
U Conn?? Just got an email from them
Indiana, UMass -- where can the supplement for UMass be found? I don't see it on the website
Thank you for the heads up!!! || UPenn has a supplementary questionnaire on their website || Some programs like UConn and UCLA (STARS) send out supps later in the season |
Is BU only taking applicants for their 6 year program? Any 3 year positions? They are all 3 years positions, the later 3 are not really binding
From their website, it seems like the program is only interested in applicants willing to do the 6 year program
<--- Yes, all advanced positions are "6 year" positions
not enforceable legally, this has been discussed in past sheets
If you want to take the risk of being blackballed by the program go ahead, but "I'll bring a lawyer" as a contingency plan probably isn't a good idea. The first 6 yr class is currently in their 2nd year of Derm residency.
Wow no thanks. Will not be applying to this program
Again, not enforceable whatsoever. Only affects you if you want to make half salary doing academics versus private practice. All VC funded private empires (dinosaurs selling their established practices) give no Fs if BU is salty about you leaving before doing your indentured servitude years are done.
And what if someone wants to work in academics but at another institution? Oh that's right, you'd be completely blackballed. Keep in mind that any state you go to, your derm program has to sign off on any licensing paperwork verifying residency completion for your medical license. Don't put it past a program to use a charge of "unprofessionalism" against you when they fill it out which then a state board could sanction you for it.
Is it really true Ann Arbor residents contracts have a non-compete?
A residency contract is pretty standard/same across the ACGME office for all residents across an institution for all specialties. I don't see how a non-compete would really be relevant in a residency training contract, since you're still in training.
A little dated but: https://hoaumich.org/contract/2013/, "In accordance with the American Council on Graduate Medical Education, no House Officer will be required to sign a non-competition guarantee. Additionally, no House Officer will be bound by such covenants signed prior to or during tenure as House Officer."
I've also heard there is a loophole in that if you fellowship after 3rd year technically, you don't have to come back to the mother ship
Incorrect. According to the website, they say you would do your subspecialty Derm fellowship and then come back to BU as faculty.

Hey I matched in Derm and have a bunch of friends who did - feel free to ask us anything!
OMFG!
What color pom poms did you use on your rotation princess?
ask for advice on the real SDN site where there are plenty of known attendings and private practice folks donating their valuable time to help you
I know this will be shocking to applicants, but people who've recently matched or are current derm residents do come back to help people in future match cycles. This happened last year on the spreadsheet and their advice was invaluable esp. on the WWYD posts in which you're comparing several programs
YAY!
I'm not the OP, but I'm the one who did start out the WWYD with the UTSW vs Miami post =) and I'm glad to give honest advice either here, or on SDN!
| Thank you so much for asking that question last year -- it was sort of the match that set the whole flame on the WWYD posts and the answers we got were so helpful (probably more helpful than the spreadsheet had been up until that point). Hope intern year is treating you well. |
What's your advice for preparing for interviews?
What was your grand total for this whole process (ERAS + flights + hotels etc) and how many interviews? Trying to figure out how many pennies I need to save up
~6k, have an answer for "why derm?". |
For anyone on here who previously matched, is it better to submit 4 derm letters or 3 derm and 1 IM/peds?
As long as they're strong letters, it doesn't matter. They don't have to be all 4 derm letters. I had 3 Derm letters and 1 from Peds and matched.
I had 1 derm and 2 Medicine letters and they were great
3 derm (rural, dermpath, and academic) IM I matched last year
4 strong derm letters is the best case, mostly because connections help (I did residency with your letter writer, oh your letter writer was my attending when i was a resident, etc). I personally had 3 derm and 1 IM. My IM letter was really strong but no one ever mentioned it. In short, 4 really strong derm letters are the best, but a really strong non-IM letter is better than a lukewarm derm letter
Prolly a silly question but if a program asks for at least 3 letters- is it better to give 3 or 4 letters?
So I sent 4 LORs to all derm programs. It wasn't a big deal at all. It wasn't some type of trick to see if you were following directions if you'd only send 3, if they were to ask for 3 on the website. I think they all know you're sending apps electronically en masse so you're just clicking. Essentially on the other end, a residency program coordinator prints all this stuff out from the ERAS portal (App, MSPE, Personal Statement, LORs, etc.) for individual derm faculty to review. It's a lot of paper so they don't have time for nitpicking.
*For cosigned letters (a derm attending wrote it and it was cosigned by the chair) how do you fill these out for ERAS?
F
I'm bored. Someone tell me a joke
what did the dermatologist say to the firefly?
Your skin is glowing? |
What's green, black, and blue?
No idea, what is it?
No idea, thought you would know
I filled in the Stats page, my step score is very sad and lonely so far lol
If you're concerned, definitely apply very broadly and go on every derm interview that you get. You definitely have above the average in terms of total number of publications, esp. since they're actually accepted. Being from a top 10 med school will really help, & having really great LORs from well-known dermies will also help. I think your story of 5 years of research before med school, will also be a good hook & set you apart, so maybe incorporate a little of that story into your personal statement.
Agreed, your best bet is to apply broadly. Sadly the truth is some programs will overlook your application from their step 1 screen. Use all your connections!
THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT EVERYONE! YALL ARE GREAT :)
In the interest of saving everyone money - MS4 - do not apply to NYMC as they are not allowed to accept 4th year medical students only interns and residents
This checks out, thanks. Any others?
New Mexico's and Buffalo's Derm program lost accreditation.
Sinai notoriously takes their own fellows.
But not as many fellows this year, and they have 8 spots.
<--- Yes, NYMC is outside of the match and they don't recruit from the MS-4 applicant pool
