for what it's worth i was told not to do aways by a mentor who primarily worked on research w/ me and then told to do aways by res/attendings i rotated with because it would be a good way for me to stand out to programs. so i would get multiple opinions from people before deciding not to do aways

so like what changed this year?? as an aside I think the faculty are getting tired of applicants just putting pediatric derm and wanting to work with underserved communities and not actually wanting to do that in the future. so if you're planning on putting those two to stand out, don't unless you actually strongly are passionate

I'd argue it's not toxic, faculty just assume students at "elite" schools don't need as much guidance and we'll figure it out ourselves which is not necessarily true lol
