I am on my RY so have not applied yet, but there was this derm resident medfluencer on tiktok kind of struck a nerve. She said something along the lines of "leave your rock at home," amongst other things, along the lines of, you can't apply to derm if you have bad acne. Just generlaly messed up things. But it got me wondering if there is truth to what she was saying and of derm attendings/residents *do* think this way? I'm engaged and I do have a rock but its a lab diamond (so it was quite price reasonable) and I love wearing it to clinic days. But her tiktok got me self conscious about this, like do we leave our rings/nicer things at home? And do attendings judge you for having cystic acne (mine flares pretty bad when I'm near my period)... like of course they will say no to your face but wonder what they actually think
the thing is, she very much is not. She is a resident at an accredited program...> which program?
temple
LOL THIS IS BS i just got over an annoying breakout from not having my slynd BC and I matched pretty well i never even considered temple idk what they do there
Haha I was just thinking of her this week as I show up to my away rotation with new acne from all the stress... If you dont know who she is, she basically posted a titkok last year saying you CANNOT show up to your derm auditon rotation with a face full of acne, you can be working on it, but you basically should not be showing up with lots of acne. And the purpose of this tiktok was to give advice to people going on aways. Obviously got a shit ton of backlash for this from other dermatologists and other specialties as well and deleted her account. Her username was drdermbot and she is a resident at temple. Name starts with an M. Must be a PGY3 or 4 by now - you can easily find this tiktok because it got many reposts/stitches. I dont think residents or faculty care irl. If they do thats just a toxic program
i had an attending tell me to start using tretinoin before my away rotations
and thats weird and we shouldnt normalize unsolicited "advice" like that!
Def absolutely insane that that resident said that. I do almost wonder if there is some truth to the whole halo effect (and opposite effect), at least subconciously, given the famous rads study about attractive applicants doing better. But obviously an old-ish study looking at something slightly different https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31149924/. Not saying i agree with it!!
ya i do think there's a halo effect unfortunately even outside of derm. i had a few people mention my looks on the interview trail lol. this is only my opinion tho as a resi i feel a responsibility to promote body positivity and kind of fight back against those toxic views. i've had people try and bait me into talking crap about ppl's looks and they act shocked and disgusted when i say everybody is beautiful lol.
Wait I'm confused. I thought you couldn't be *too* attractive bc the other girlies get jealous
very true! the implicit biases are very real. but that was a crazy post from the resident. sorry I cant control when i get pimples lol
LOL so basically be beautiful but not too beautiful !!!! classic
ok now yall are overthinking it lol
its a joke
The only ppl that have ever been mean to me on rotations have been other middle aged women. I think if you're an attractive male you're exponentially favored versus if you're an attractive female you need to strike a fine balance between looking too vain and vice versa. The patriarchy will always win
hot take but just be yourself. always gonna be someone that doesn't like you for whatever reason
https://www.tiktok.com/@dermatoxic/video/7535994108708539661 The full video is mostly her criticizing the appearances of other women its crazy she watched this back and thought it was going to get a positive response
I have a feeling more residents/attendings agree with her... than meets the eye
maybe they do but its clearly all just internalized misogyny. she even recognizes at the end that everything she says is mostly directed towards women and that she would need to "think" about what men do in derm thats annoying. Which is very revealing. She then says dont have acne but also don't wear too much makeup so you cant win lol.
no bc pls tell me why all my letters written by my male attendings are glowing but the ones written by woman are way more critical. I'm a relatively quiet girl too that gets their work done, but male attendings are way nicer for sure. cough obgyn, I was between obgyn and derm and the residents put me off sooooooo fast
coud not agree more. the meanest people ive ever worked with were obgyn residents and scrub techs who were middle aged women
Someone needs to email the temple PD about this. Seeing how much power residents have over students, this is something they need to address. I'm surprised this hasn't gone viral, I feel like the resident is so lucky she hasn't been mega cancelled
it was over a year ago so im sure they are aware. She deleted her account after this video
It's a bad take.... it's not worth cancelling her over. The fuck?
I'm not saying she should be cancelled. I'm just surprised she has not been, in today's climate

Guys seriously stop getting hot and bothered over what people say on social media...

people are made because she's right. look at what most derm residents look like. would you recommend showing up 100 pounds overweight to an ortho rotation? i get it's not 1 to 1 but you will be judged on everything, some fair and some not. if you haven't at least tried to control acne, something that literally every derm applicant should know the first through fifth line treatments for, it's fair to raise questions. obviously you can have other concomitant contributing factors but she's not wrong and people are mad about it. disclaimer i don't think it should be that way, but it is
Bruh they look like that because 1. thats naturally the residents derm will attract half the time (people who care about their skin/appearance) 2. they have easy access to prescriptions and cosmetic treatments. Actually crazy to say its fair to raise questions if you know the first through fifth line treatments for acne. Every medical student knows that? Not just derm applicants tf? Yes we cant control the things we are judged on but it gets to a point...she is deadass saying she judges your competence based on your appearance
so clav is right
this is a troll.
