PGY1 matched Derm resident here. Take your prelim/TY interviews seriously. Your intern year is MASSIVELY important for your personal well-being. Look at how many inpatient months the intern year has. Check to see if you have to do an ICU or Surgery rotation or not. Being worked like a dog does not make you a better future doctor.

thank u for the wisdom! wondering what u think about # of weeks of nightloat or other considerations other than the ones you listed that we should be asking about

even if you have to do an ICU or Surgery rotation it might be chill....like my surgery was only one day a week clinic for an hour and in the OR for cases like once a week for an hour.. no nights on ICU. most days got out at 11AM-12PM.

What is a good # for inpatient months?

3-4. Look for programs that have multiple months of electives, you can take derm/rheum/ID/plastics etc. all will help with PGY2

Alternate viewpoint: many of these "chill" TYs are in the absolute middle of nowhere and yeah theres a lot of chill elective time but there is LITERALLY nothing to do. as someone who is currently single and closer to 30 than 20... not sure I'd want to waste a year of my life in north dakota or whatever

if you went to a harvard affiliate for a TY and are calling yourself a harvard trained derm you're just as bad as the linkedin masses who took online electives with harvard extension and brand themselves with harvard

i think most matched derm applicants are coming from MD schools and don't know the hidden gem chill TY in desirable areas, but they exist and are mostly filled with DO applicants who rotated there during med school

there are chill TYs in more rural northeast areas that are a reasonable drive away from civilization
