Anyone remember if UPMC explicitely said no Thank You emails?
Yeah, at least on my interview day. -- Thank god! Good for Pitt, Vanderbilt said the same thing. More programs should say this and mad respect to Pitt and Vandy for being direct about this!
Yes, also said specifically no thank yous on my interview day too
Oh lord. Vandy wants a fun fact for the name tag. I don’t feel like I have many appropriate fun facts. (Like, they would sound too nerdy or too braggy)
lol was just thinking the same thing.
like are we going with serious impressive stuff or stuff that’s actually fun to talk about? Ie pets lol
hobbies is my plan
< are you all doing the IM interviews? Nope, TY all the way lol x2
what happens from 8-12p on the interview day then? lol --- Good Question!x2
is anyone else a regular/struggling to get invites applicant that would love to match at most "mid/low-tier" derm programs?
I'd love to go pretty much anywhere x7
<< first get the interview invites, then worry about ranking. << I think its reasonable to think about now, especially considering the possibility of having IV overlaps and having to drop a program
After talking with the lay public (my parents), going to a program with brand name recognition helps even if you're in private practice, since that's one the things people consider when choosing their doctor. But I have also been told med school prestige matters more.
Brand recognition and tier don't always match up. Hopkins and Vanderbilt are probably better known as names to average americans compared to UCSF. << probably matters more to people more familiar with medicine. Most don’t care about where a private practice doc trained. And echo that lay people don’t know strong training
The public knows about 10 big names. They care how nice their doc treats them.
Yea i would argue most patients do not know where their doctor went to med school or residency (or what residency is). I know many IMG docs who have busier practices and higher patient ratings because they have put more time in to hustle for their practice than their ivy league collegues.
<Another consideration is the type of training. You get exposed to cool rare things in top places, but their programs may advertise that majority go into academics and that is where their connections are. Lower tier places advertise the opposite since their connections are in other practice settings. <-- Yeah, this is not accurate. "Private practice connections" are mostly local (e.g. in the metro area a particular practice is in), regardless if a program is a "top" program or lower ranked. Having a "top" brand name attached to your name would still be valuable in private practice (both locally and outside the metro region of your program) - private practices like advertising "Harvard-trained" doctors, etc. It's silly, but a small consideration. Point being, lesser ranked programs are not going to have any more connections in private practice compared with a highly ranked program.
Can we create some sort of list on what reputations/tiers are? Think this would be useful since I feel like there's not a great objective system of rankings. >>Maybe someone can make a tab and everyone can make their preconceived thoughts on program strengths, might be useful to compare especially since some of us geographically limited lol > A list like this is probably not useful or valid. But it would be fun to see what people think. Tier list page made!
Top tier: UPenn Harvard UCSF NYU Mayo Michigan, Emory, Henry Ford?) and Michigan and Mayo are not top tier. Would add Stanford, Hopkins, and UCLA instead)
would also add UTSW https://www.mdedge.com/dermatology/article/157864/practice-management/us-dermatology-residency-program-rankings-based/page/0/1 <<what is the difference between this article and the doximity rankings? Is there more validity to one vs the other? << lol, someone put UCLA in top tier (UCLA isn't even a Department, it's a Division) >> lol UCLA low tier for sure << realistically, probably middle to low, great overall health system but will always have hands tied and no real ability to grow
UCLA is a solid program, strong surgical training, lacks the super complex patients of some more intense programs but it depends on what you are looking for in your training << I don't think anyone's saying it's a bad program, just not a top tier, that's kind of silly
UCLA is the perfect example of a low-to-mid tier program that is nonetheless quite competitive given it's in California. Again, there's often a disconnect between prestige/quality of training and competitiveness. Location, location, location.
No way that Hopkins and UCLA would be top tier over Michigan and Mayo
Mid-tier: OHSU, Iowa, Minnesota, UPMC >> Would probably put MN as low tier? >> Thoughts? Why? >> Minnesota would probably be in same tier as OHSU, Iowa, UPMC. Iowa has great faculty, but I think it does suffer from being in a relatively non-diverse, predominately white, smallish-city in Iowa. Minnesota, OHSU, and UPMC are in more urban environments with at least UPMC and Minnesota having more ethnic / racial diversity, (Portland is super white as well). Also, no one should trust that MDedge nonsense x5
To be fair they tried to make an objective measure. Many of the opinions here leave out some good programs and add in top medical schools that are not top derm programs
MN, Iowa as med-high tier? Would drop UPMC to low tier (just feel like no residents really enjoy it there but maybe that's just me lol)? And Iowa usually as a top 20 program on almost all ranking systems (though you cant always trust these things so who knows). I think its one of those places that suffers in many peoples minds because they have a not-so great med school and its in the mid west, but the derm program is actually extremely well-respected independednt of those facts
1. Penn 2. UCSF 3. NYU 4. Harvard 5. Stanford 6. Northwestern 7. Emory 8. UTSW 9. Hopkins 10. Wash U 11. Mayo 12. Michigan 13. Iowa 14. HF 15. OHSU 16. Colorado 17. Minnesota 18. Utah 19. Cornell 20. Vanderbilt
<-What is this list based on? Its totally inaccurate. Hopkins and Vanderbilt are mid tier programs at best. No Yale? No UW? No Wisconsin? No Miami? No Sinai? Cornell over Columbia? UPMC is definitely mid to top tier. Also, tiers maybe, but I dont understand how you can possibly rank 1 vs. 3 vs. 8 off the cuff << yeah, 1-3 is pretty standard, gets messy with next 5 I was about to post how accurate this list is. Some of the programs listed above are no way in the conversation. You can maybe disagree with Wash U/Cornell to the left tho. I'd agree Vanderbilt too high too
<Yale for sure. x4 . Think that list is pretty accurate for top 20 minus Wash U, Cornell, and Vanderbilt. Would replace with Yale and Columbia. And Cleveland Clinic maybe. <<I question the order of some of these too. Hopkins is not a top 10 (but it is a top 20 probably). I agree that Sinai, miami, Columbia would also be top 20. Vandy should not be on that list and neither should a few others.
<How good are the following programs: UPMC, Hopkins, UCSD, Miami.
I think those are all decent programs (mid-top tier?). I would say that I typically view Hopkins as a mid-tier program (they don't have a lot of diversity in terms of training sites, though Hopkins itself is a great hospital). Miami is typically considered a Top 10 program - but they also are quite disorganized, old facilities, longer hours (Saturday clinics). UPMC takes a lot of MD/PhDs and has great Mohs training, though I never found their program actually attracts people who want to be there. UCSD is solid, somewhat basic-science focused. It's outshined by other programs in California (e.g. Stanford, UCSF, USC) and San Diego has great weather / beaches, though admittedly isn't the most exciting place to live / lacks a lot of arts / culture compared to most bigger cities in the United States.
name me a state with better Mexican food tho
Cutaneous Colleagues, we are now at the halfway point for both first time interview offers and number of derm spots offered. I have updated my sheet. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. -SD
thank you!
we're at the halfway point, so i'd say about half as many as you think you need... so maybe 3-4? (I only have 1 so *shrug*). Still at 0 here .
I agree that 3-4 would be good though I do not have that many either so many of us are in the same low/no interview boat
Thanks SD. For your recent post, Vandy/TJ have went out this week. Also, HealthPartners has a Jan interview date for those of us starting 7/2021. << When did healthpartners release? I thought only honorhealth
So...do we start panicking now? << I had the same question and my PD just told me "not yet" but I am losing faith in the system << I have 0-1 invites (internal and 1 local, but it's a soft invite imho) so I am really going to start panicking <<I have the same. When you start panicking what will that change? (not a philosophical question, but actually haha) Most faculty still want to wait a few weeks before they start making calls bc that is the normal timeline
what's an ok/good number to have at this stage? Probably around 5-10 range is average
seriously?
not true
prob more like 4-6
shits
Vanderbilt invite x12 (ERAS Scheduler)
I GOT THE HORSES IN THE BACK! > ugh, was hopeful for this one > ugh same x2 > method of contact? > they sent an email first then another one in ERAS. I actually had no ties here, they didn't even want me for away rotation, which is why I'm very surprised by this
<<Who do we email for the prelim year? The email said "Ms. Braden" but I'm not sure if she's still there?
Just fyi y'all, at least 4 programs sent out interview invites on Veteran's day last year! Figured I couldn't be the only one wondering whether it'd be another silent day
x2
< which were they?<Emory, UIC, U of MI, others?<<Emory, UIC, 2nd wave for Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt
< Emory and JHU seem due
(updated!) So for December interviews, we're still waiting on Rutgers, Thomas Jefferson, UCLA, Rush, U Chicago, Vanderbilt, UMass, Emory, also HealthPartners and UAB <<AWESOME POST x1
the gray box always brings the anxiety lol << green and red for me x3
lol, why red? If you didn't get a rejection yourself, that's good! << that's the cue for me to check and its typically correct lol x2
Good morning everyone! Will interview invites be released 11/6/19? Yes: 5 No: 11 Programs: Mount Sinai, University of Miami, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Hopkins, Penn Actual: 0 As of 12:00PM today: 63% of programs have not sent out interviews and a sum total of ~171 derm spots have been offered interviews. What does this discrepency between the % of programs that have not been released and the large amount of spots that have not been offered interviews? That the 63% of interviews that have not been released encompasses the larger programs that have more spots and many that have already sent out interviews are smaller and more "regional". What's the point? IT IS EARLY and the overwhelming majority of spots have not been offered interviews yet AND even the ones that have been offered may not have offered for all their spots. On this equvelant day (i.e. first Wednesday of the month) in last years application cycle: 1 interview went out (George Washington University, which came out yesterday for us). Love, SD
Johns Hopkins and Penn are both overdue for interview invites this year. Hopefully, Vanderbilt sends its regular ones out today << Mayo AZ is also pretty overdue << Also, to the neurotics among us, just know that Penn, Vanderbilt, and Johns Hopkins have historically sent out their invitations in batches
Penn's website says by 11/25
<Hopkins and penn - both of these places so far out of my reach it doesn't affect me << Try not to feel this way. I was on 0 for a long time and got 2 interviews at top 10 programs. My app is so regular that I assumed it was a mistake. The point is, you never know and no program is a reach.
<haha, Mt. Sinai practically sends after Christmas, but I like the wishful thinking!
12/6 in 2017, but yes, probs too early.
Will interview invites be realed 11/6/19: Yes: 3 No: 0 Programs: Mount Sinai, University of Miami, Cornell, Vanderbilt, Hopkins, Penn Actual: 0
11/5 was a busy day. Will 11/6 be just as prolific? Stay tuned folks. <Why Mt Sinai? Aren't they historically pretty late? << Because I have a feeling deep in my loins
UMiami most likely won't release dates until they complete their internal interviews.
when are the internal interviews?
I think we should call you sheet dad. There's a dude on the plastics sheet that is now called sheet dad and you are sheet dad. << I am a guy, and I am down to be called dad << thanks sheet daddy
skeet . daddy sheet daddy. Are you dual applying for derm and plastics? << Just derm << looking for a daddy this interview szn, any takers hit me up <<also need daddy I've been a bad grill
<< plastics sheet dad dropping by, nice to see others taking up the mantle
Will (more) interviews be released on (11/5/19)? Yes: 1 No: 0 Program Predictions: Mayo AZ, Hopkins, Stanford, Harvard, Minnesota, UMiami, Vanderbilt, Jefferson, Ohio State, Penn, UChicago, Wayne State, Texas Tech, UAB, SIU, Rush, Temple, UVA Actual IVs (4): Georgetown, Wash U (research), Henry Ford, George
< You know, there is the entirety of the West Coast to consider. We're still in business hours << I don't think it's updated to say we're done, just a running tally (the same row is moved up) << just updated it << 10+ person, can you please press CTRL+Z to not erase the field that was there or use the function to get the past entry back << Thank you for reverting it back to original
Have there been other rejections? NYU, Cornell, Vanderbilt? Anything not yet posted? <- Cornell hasn't sent out anything (interviews/rejections), but Columbia has (interview only), and Vanderbilt has only sent its interviews for its physician-scientist track.

Some posts are shown because their comments mention this program.
I don't think they were every day, and I think some start at 7:30 and maybe some at 8
