Ahh nothing like starting the day to a rejection letter from Wake Forest. Thank god for drinking on Thirsty Thursdays. #Retweet x8| Oh my gosh... YESSSS

#817Mar 23

I wasn't expecting to get an interview there, as I have never lived in and have no connection to the South. But I was surprised to hear from any program so early and sadder than I expected to be.

Just curious, are the people who received rejections very competitive applicants (indicating there might have been some review of your application) or do you guys think it was a filter-based rejection (for instance, step 1<240 or third year grades)?

Mar 23
0

I would consider myself a competitive applicant (Step 1 260, AOA, Good amount of research and extracurriculars; but let's get real everyone is probably a good applicant), but I still think some degree of filtration goes into it. They probably have a system similar to UNC where they divide the country into regions and subsequently filter out people until they get applicants who are "representative" of the whole country to interview

Very impersonal rejection

Mar 23

So is this a bad sign for the rest of the cycle if I was already rejected at Wake?

Mar 23
0

Can't think that way, man/woman/person. Hang in there.

Mar 23
0

FWIW, rejected with 240s Step 1 and not from area

Mar 23
0

Also rejected, with 245+ step 265+ step 2/AOA, not from the area

Mar 23
0

DO with 250s step 1 and 240s step 2 NOT rejected.... this is weird| So if we didn't hear either way? Are we waitlisted?

Mar 23
0

Maybe first screen was Step 1 < 250 :(

Mar 23
0

I don't think it means anything for those who haven't heard. They did several waves of rejections last year--they probably divide the applications into piles and have only gotten through one. If you haven't heard, it just means they haven't gotten to you yet.

Mar 23

FWIW, rejected with 260+ step 1 and step 2

Mar 23

I rotated at Wake and was told that their first filter is by skimming LORs only without looking at scores or grades

Mar 23
0

I guess my LORs were not as good as I thought lol

Mar 23
0

Ouch, so basically if we receive a rejection from WF anytime soon, we should start panicking more?

Mar 23
0

What does it mean if we still haven't heard anything from WF?

Mar 23
0

Nothing. They sent many waves of both interview offers and rejections last year.

I know that the Wake Forest rejections went out yesterday, but did they send out interview invites as well? The "Interviews" tab seems to indicate that they did. Can we clarify that? x2

#813Mar 23

Perhaps it has begun...

Mar 23
0

who got an interview? please indicate your stats! x4.

Mar 23
0

Yes, I got one on the 5th and was really surprised! Not from the area. STEP 1 & 2 250+, AOA.

If we were already rejected from Wake, is that a bad sign for the rest of the application cycle? Any previous year applicants able to comment?

#799Mar 23

Did rejections already go out?

Mar 23
0

see above comment about LORs as method of first round app evaluation

Mar 23
0

Wow. So if we got rejected so fast, it means our letters suck? That is somehow more unsettling to me than if it had been a Step/AOA screen...| are you seriously expecting an interview invite from every derm program? you're not special. get over it

Mar 23
0

Yikes... calm down.

Mar 23
0

Probably statisically the majority of us will be getting 6-11 interviews or so, so it's OK to be rejected a lot

Mar 23
0

My question was more whether it bodes poorly to be in the first round of rejections. Obviously majority of applicants will be rejected by majority of programs. I am fully aware that I am a thoroughly average applicant.

Mar 23
0

Hey man, don't mind Mr. Crankypants over here. We're all in this together

Mar 23
0

I doubt that being rejected in first wave means you suck the most....they probably split all the apps into chunks and go through them in groups, and decide which out of each group they want to interview/reject

Mar 23
0

<-I got a first round of Wake Forest rejections but UWisc invite, so I don't think it means anything,

Mar 23
0

That makes me feel better! Thanks!

Mar 23
0

Are you talking Univ of Washington or UWisc for the invite?

Mar 23
0

UWisc - UWash won't go out for a while

Mar 23

you guys really need to try and not take every rejection personally. If you apply to every program, even if you get 15 interviews which is absolutely outstanding, you still get >100 rejections. if you take every one personally, you are in for a very long and depressing application cycle. even applicants with the most amazing stats get tons of rejections..... there are SO many things that go into the decision besides stats, different programs value different things and they can only interview so many people. hang in there!

Mar 23
0

Current derm resident here who's involved in reviewing applications. Believe me, when I say, getting rejected does not mean you have a weak application. Even tippy top applicants will get >50% rejections and most of you will (if you applied to all programs), get > 90% rejections. Programs don't interview many applicants and tend to preference people they know (rotators, home students, etc.) or those who have regional or local connections (especially for non-top programs). If you're Wake Forest, for instance, do you really think that top Harvard applicant who grew up in California is trying to move to Winston-Salem. Would you want to waste one of your say, 25 interview spots on that person (no idea how many they interview).

Mar 23
0

The people reviewing applications are certainly not taking chances with their limited interview spots, especially when they know people are applying to 100+ programs. Most applicants who are rejected are probably more upset about the concept of rejection and what that means to their anxiety and ego, not really about the program itself.

What do ya'll think? Should we expect to hear from Wake Forest again today? They sent out the previous batch last Thursday

#784Mar 23

AHHH WAKE FORREST DERM INTERVIEW INVITE!! SO EXCITED! - they said in the thing they sent out that they will interview 25 people per date for a total of 50 invites... so there is still room for some love if you have not heard from them yet!

#782Mar 23

I wonder how many invites they're sending out per batch..? So 2 dates and 50 interviews.. sounds like they've sent out all the batches they need to send =(

Mar 23

Any rejections today?| yes x3

Mar 23

I haven’t heard anything from them x9

Mar 23

WF is notorious for doing interviews and rejections in several batches...

Good days will come soon, just hang in there. I know it's easier said than done.

Has anyone gotten an invite after the program sent out initial invites?

#620Mar 23

No. Not unless they are known to send multiple waves. In most circumstances, that should be interpreted as a rejection

Mar 23
0

I think I’ve seen someone post that about Wake forest a while after initial interviews

Mar 23
0

They are known to send multiple invite waves so would be an exception

Mar 23
0

Previous applicant: multiple programs definitely sent out invites in waves last year. I cant remember which exactly, but definitely remember seeing invites went out on last year's sheet, panicking, and then feeling enormous relief hearing from programs a couple days or weeks later

Mar 23
0

Yeah, this is where this sheet causes unnecessary anxiety IMO. Live your life and come here only when you have a specific question that needs answered. Trying to follow my own advice.

Is there a pre-interview dinner for Wake Forest? Didn't see anything about it in the itinerary |There is a mixer with faculty and residents followed by an informal dinner with residents only

#161Mar 23

During their December interview they only had the informal social the night before.
