As someone who has never left the West Coast, I should have listened to my mentors when they said programs in the South, Midwest, and to a lesser extent the East Coast wouldn't take my application seriously

not sure. I don't think there is a connection between geographic bias and when they send out invites

UMich PD used to call out of region applicants (with no warning) and say "we want to interview you - would you actually come here?". Terrifying!
