why does yale always match people from nnon-top tier schools? do people from top schools not rank it high?< this isn't true< why would they rank it high? overrated. < that and they like people who send LOI, top applicants wouldn't usually send a LOI to Yale < so they would rather have desperate people who want to be at yale than top applicants. sounds like they have pride/ego issues < this year they were super committed to URIM recruitment because they have an image issue and really want to diversify the program. Usually they take a bunch of internals and people from other Ivy League schools. < current roster has no other top schools? < internal here…they seem to care most about board scores/research achievements + wanting to come to Yale + internal applicants. I know for a fact that they don't care much about where the applicants come from but more about what they've done since starting med school. The chief resident I worked with in clinic there told me that they almost never like Harvard applicants because they too often are arrogant or are not as accomplished as similar applicants from lower tier schools who have had to work hard to be competitive. I kind of get that based on my experience with Harvard people tbh lol. But they've also taken NYU, Cornell, Stanford people in the past 5 years just to name a few.

noticing a lot of ppl asking about NYU prelim - just a heads up that derm applicants don't look like they are eligible (i wasted money on an app only to discover this 10 minutes after i submitted) "Please note that at this time, only preliminary positions linked to neurology and anesthesiology are available." https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/medicine/education/internal-medicine-residency < There is a seperate set of programs that say "Med-Prelim/Anesthesia" and "Med-Prelim/Neurology" so I think they mean only the those specalties have a linked prelim-advanced < oh maybe! oh well I withdrew my app after that lol.

Is it worth doing aways at the top programs? < The advice I received is to focus more on doing aways at programs that may be interested in taking you, and that you would be happy training at. It may not be your first choice, but a good fit nonetheless. Top programs are unlikely to interview you based on away rotation performance alone. The rest of your application should be among the top derm applicants as well. << Agreed on this. Depending on the tier of your particular medical school, don't do audition Derm rotations at top-tier Derm places like Harvard, UCSF, Penn, NYU, Stanford, etc. thinking that you're somehow just going to so "wow" derm attendings w/your med student derm knowledge & hard work that you'll either get an interview or that you'll get a stellar letter to be able to use to get interviews at other places (keep in mind that these places have their own home med students going for Derm whom they have worked with for years). That's just not how it works, unfortunately, even w/stratospheric board scores. Wouldn't matter even if you read & memorized all of Andrews. Choose the location and institution of your audition derm elective carefully (talk w/your home derm program faculty mentors, w/previous graduating Derm alumni from your institution, etc.). It can sometimes mean the difference between matching vs. not matching. < what if you have strong connections at top programs and then do an away there, ie stanford/upenn mentor for 2 years and then do an away? << If you have strong connections (I'm assuming you did research w/that Stanford/UPenn Derm mentor for 2 years and were relatively productive) then yes, it could very much help. This is where showing your academic record and CV to that Stanford/UPenn mentor would help.
