Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

2 entries

1. Very fucking weird vibes while rotating there. Attendings are nice to your face, harsh behind your back. Residents (including chiefs) are talking shit about certain nurses. Everyone can be super cold (esp some of the nurses? idk maybe just a NYC thing). Residents ask you to do little personal errands not related to patient care.

💬1. Might be a NYC thing with the nurses; they've been on strike in the past few months and tensions been building up. Frequent discussions on r/residency about the dynamic between NYC nurses and residents. > personal errands sounds like some bullshit > a friend who did an away there told me he was asked to help with picking up a resident's child lol > that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard respectfully a crazy thing to ask a med student

I've heard places with a good track record of matching mohs include univ florida, univ arizona, Mayo, U Miami, UTSW

geisinger and iowa. geisinger has lots of mohs and one of the best mohs matching track rates. Iowa does a lot of mohs as well and has a very strong program

What does it take to match at a prestigious, t5 program like Penn/Harvard/Yale/NYU/Stanford, etc. Does anyone have any internal insight into what these program are looking for?

#3932026-2027 DermJul 2

Idk what specific answer you’re looking for…. Quality research (first-author, novel research, no bullshit case report/research letter) preferably with faculty at a T5 institution, step score >260, amazing clinical LORs, and something cool, non-med/derm hobby or project on the side. Bonus points if you go to a T5 med school. And even after all of this, pray to the Gods. And then be a cool, normal person at interviews.

does it matter if your resesarch is accepted versus submitted-- for example if im first author on a translational work and its just submitted will this be a huge disadvantage

Jul 2
0

accepted is better than submitted, but at least you can put submitted on eras

Jul 2
0

my first-author research was accepted super late like a few days prior to start of derm interviews because mentor didn't care and tried to sabotage :/ I had to bring it up in interviews. Probably hurt my overall interviews but helped a lot to secure match.

there is no specific answer. you could try to google or talk to the residents accepted to these programs but even then you might not even know what secret sauce they have lol. but there's most likely something interesting about each one of them (even if it's personal history, prior career outside medicine). or you might know and not even realize what the programs are valuing.

aside from location, are there other reasons why people drool over NYU over other NYC programs?

#3862026-2027 DermJun 30

honestly people dont, if anything i feel like nyu isnt as popular among nyc programs

Jun 30
0

the cope is strong with this one

Jun 30

don't NYU residents get paid much less compared to other Manhattan programs, and it's known as a work-horse program

Jun 30
1

the people who do drool over it are drawn to the t5 status, not the actual working conditions, so depends what you value

Jun 30
0

stop going off of info that's literally been parroted for the last 5+ years and do your own research. NYU residents just got a raise and the working conditions are fine

Because NYU is a T5 program.

the residents seem super happy, top notch faculty, and diverse training sites that are right next to each other. plus well rounded for surgery and cosmetic exposure on top of med derm

Jul 1

correct me if im wrong but the raise is still less than other nyc programs? maybe i shouldnt be concerned but every dollar feels like it counts right now.

Jul 2
0

it is slightly less than some other programs but doesn't make a meaningful difference. if it's that important to you, don't apply there

Jul 3

the salary is roughly 95K -> 100K -> 105K during your 3 years on nyu salary

Which derm programs have the best cosmetics training? I've scoured some of the past sheets/SDN and sometimes UCI, Kaiser LA, and Samaritan are mentioned. Any others?

#2532026-2027 DermMay 11

saw in previous sheets that cosmetics were top-notch at nyu, especially compared to other t5s

#2502026-2027 DermMay 10

Idk what they are looking for, but the residents seem so happy esp for a t5. one can dream sigh

PSA, there are some programs like NYU and Stanford that are not on VSLO, they have their own sites for aways. So if you're really interested in a specific program, look up what system they use for away applications, dont' assume it will show up on VSLO unless that's what they've been doing every year

#1972026-2027 DermMay 10

Stanford is on VSLO they are just done taking apps. I believe NYU also already closed

Are the T5 programs equal in impressiveness (UCSF = Penn = Harvard = NYU = Yale/Stanford) or is there an internal tier difference with one group being significantly better than the others?

#812026-2027 DermApr 4

The best one is the one you like the most (+/- the one in the city you like the most)

Apr 4
0

This obsession with T5s, jeez. If it makes you happy, great! At the end of the day you will be a dermatologis though. People from not T5s end up as faculty at T5s all the time, and many T5 residents end up going into private practice.

when people say t5 programs, are they referring to doximity lists (penn, ucsf, harvard. nyu. yale?)
