Any insight on UT Houston's program?
toxic program from previosu sheets and second hand knowledge
Houston, TX
Sentiment score: 4.2 / 10
Applicants discuss UT Houston as a competitive mid-tier dermatology program that primarily recruits in-state Texas candidates with limited external spots. Key concerns include high resident workload, lack of autonomy, limited resident clinic opportunities, and logistical challenges (MD Anderson location requiring parking/travel). The program is noted for late interview release dates and selective interview practices, though some acknowledge it as a solid training program.

Anyone willing to switch UT McGovern for Jan 11th?
Laughing at the Fame and Shame for UT-Houston's (now McGovern) Derm program for their MS-4 audition rotation. Kind of funny how nothing has changed in terms of the faculty (even w/one prominent faculty member having retired) which kind of transfers to the residents after awhile. And the program has really great institutions like MD Anderson Cancer Center. I always wondered how those outside of Texas saw the program when they rotated because as home students, we were so used to it and I agree, they don't do a good job explaining the different sites and faculty weren't very understanding on the commute between sites.
I feel like knowing where to do your audition rotations is so critical to matching but if you're outside of the state, you only know if you have inside information on how the actual residency program runs, which it seems like only home med students know.

But I feel like only certain types of students can rotate at places like Penn, Harvard, UCSF, etc. and have a reasonable chance of getting an interview. For most of us, it's a waste.
the cliquiness is sooo true. I felt put off at the social event because the residents would specifically interact and be super friendly with all the rotaters/internal students they knew, and no one knew me in the zoom call
are there any programs that still have interview slots open on thalamus?
1 spot for McGovern, 2 for UTSW
how many interview spots and days did mcgovern have
the flip dell austin made from last year to this year wild with away interviews >> probably under reported
The part about UT Houston only interviewing aways needs to be fixed on the Away Tab, also someone put that Texas Tech was only interviewing away rotators and this is also not true

Rejection from McGovern UTHealth 12:24 PM EST
the last sentence of that omg lol
I appreciate the admitting that it's impossible to match anymore lol
yeah truly appreciated it
can someone share with the class
spilll what did they say
"If is any consolation, I can tell you that I probably would not have even selected myself for an interview if I were to have applied today. Best wishes for the future." - why does that sound like what the derm chair would say, iykyk
hahahaha oh Ron
they send the same copy and paste rejection every year
ugh I hate when this is said… people said it about med school apps too and it comes across as "wow I had it way easier than you, that sucks for you… anyways enjoy suffering 🤗"

Thinking of backup plans if I don't match and wanted some insight 1) would be completing a TY/Prelim followed by a research fellowship at a program that has a strong track record of taking research fellows 2) delaying graduation by a couple semesters so I am allowed to do VSLO and complete 4-5 away rotations - I've heard several people do this route because when applying they are still classified as a medical student with is apparently better than an MD graduate? What is everyone's thoughts? Kinda feel like I am pigeon-holing myself into one program if I do the research fellow track but not sure if doing a ton of aways will help since I will be at those programs for a month or less... I also would like to add that I have 20+ pubmed indexed derm articles so research isn't my weakpoint, I think I excel clinically and basically was thinking having more facetime with programs would help if I reapply
I honestly think that it will be more beneficial for you to extend a year and do another degree like MPH or MBA, because realistically, in the time you're reapplying, they're going to wonder what changes you made to your initial application (obviously that is cost inefficient and not feasible for many people so take with a grain of salt)
> OP here, I ended up doing 2 aways (no home program) and only ended up with interviews at those two programs (one being UConn lol) so that's why I was considering extending graduation to do several more aways hoping they will turn into interviews if I don't match but yeah I'm concerned that it's a big risk to take since there's no guarantee I'll get 5-6 more aways as that's also a competitive process
where was your other away? If that program has a decent class size maybe you would be okay, all you need is 1 and do you have any strong connections to either aways
the other program has 7 spots so it's a bigger program, honestly not sure if I have a "strong relationship" with either program but I have worked with ppl at both institutions
7 spots is huge but I guess it depends how many internals that program has
the program is interviewing 70+ ppl and has a ton of rotators so idk ig we will see what happens but yeah that's why I am thinking of a backup plan
Is this UT Houston?
UConn is really ruining ppl with these courtesy interviews
ikr basically it's the same as having no interview - hearing all the UConn tea and lore doesn't make me feel any better
I guess the "bad year to apply" has to have some truth to it. Rip one away

Does anyone know when VCU or UT Houston are able to be scheduled today?
has anybody been able to sign up for VCU?
no
Is McGovern (UT Houston) II out for anyone else?
did someone say they got a UT Houston II?
yes
oh, was it today?
yes around 4 pm CST
I don't see it here, was it posted on this doc?
lol people might be shy to report it but a friend gave me the intel. Who knows it could be rolling invites so just keeping an open mind,. >the II was sent for home students for 12/12. I think they're still releasing others on 12/1
Any RY fellowships that basically guarantee match? Pls don't say Sinai because I go there and they don't guarantee
I thought they do for MD RY fellowships?
UTHouston does
which PI at UT Houston?
Dr. Adelaide A. Hebert
Dell in Texas has matched their fellow every year for the past several years
Hebert doesn't know if she will have one and Dell lost funding for this upcoming year for their RY> UH case
northwell Garg it looks like
UH CASE DOES NOT GUARANTEE (HORRIBLE REP OF NOT MATCHING FELLOW PRE DOC AND POST DOC)
thoughts on UT Houston (McGovern) away if no connection to Texas? I read on the spreadsheet that they interview away rotators but their past matches look like it's mostly people from Texas/people who have a connection to Texas so not sure if it's worth it> It's really not worth. TX is a big state and they usually do NOT take applicants, even with strong ties to TX if they're not from TX school. Last year, I did an away and wish I did another away I turned down...
I have three aways on my radar and luckily one accepted me. I have a home program so was hoping to do 2 aways. The two programs I havent heard from yet at UT Houston and Howard. If I had to choose one vs the other to accept (god willing I have the choice, which should I pick and why)
Neither are good tbh but pick Houston. Howard's pay is horrendous.
I disagree. Howard residents are wonderful and while DC is expensive, look at the happiness of the residents too. Clearly they're happy and that says a lot despite lower pay
Howard is that you>howard does aways???

Does anybody know if UT Houston ever accepted non away rotators
I know of one person atleast
So surprised people ranked these following programs pretty low: BU, Colorado, USC, Brown, UTSW, Mayo, WashU, Case, UT Houston, Utah << although I ranked UT Houston 2nd, I can understand their ranking
Some posts are shown because their comments mention this program.
