Sentiment score: 6.8 / 10

UTSW is consistently ranked as a top-tier dermatology program (#1 in Texas, top 10 nationally) known for producing exceptionally well-trained clinicians with strong research opportunities and excellent patient populations. Applicants report mixed experiences with program culture—while residents appear happy and the clinical training is rigorous, some criticize the PD and faculty as intense, unsupportive of non-academic goals, and occasionally unpleasant. Interview logistics dominate discussion with high competition (65 interviewed for 9-11 spots) and applicants frequently seeking to swap interview dates.

I've heard places with a good track record of matching mohs include univ florida, univ arizona, Mayo, U Miami, UTSW

geisinger and iowa. geisinger has lots of mohs and one of the best mohs matching track rates. Iowa does a lot of mohs as well and has a very strong program

Can I schedule interviews on weekends or is it only week days?

Jun 25

UTSW had an interview slot on a saturday this year, rest of mine were weekdays only (generally only 1 or a couple days per program)--> so if I have 10 interviews wont I fail the FM rotation because I'll miss so many days?

your school probably has a policy for this that you can hunt down

Y'all who's gonna start the convo re what schools are best to do aways at? :Z open to hearing opinions. Some schools have stopped gauraunteeing IIs to away candidates, others have begun to prioritize internal/away candidates much more... what yall think? :)

#202026-2027 DermMar 21

Rush interviewed everyone who did an away this year, didn't happen previous years but thought it would be helpful to know! Great program!

Mar 21

theres a tab in the 25-26 sheet about aways that didnt interview rotators

Mar 21
0

i do not rec OSU, it is an awful away. rude faculty, rude residents. you will be miserable. easy away to get but occupy your time with another school

Mar 21
0

< echoing this. they interview all rotators but they are an interesting bunch..

Mar 21
0

I think the top program that guarantees an interview if you do an away is Miami. But they only take 4-8 rotators per year so if you get one you can be pretty well assured they like your app. They usually match 1-2 away rotators also despite having 30+ internals per year. Emory also guarantees an away. As does Tulane. Some texas programs do as well

Mar 22

Texas doesn't seem to match non-Texans often tho

Mar 22

UTSW does occasionally

so if you have derm1+ TY1, followed by derm1 + TY2, etc thats two ranks? and depedning on all the iterations its easy to get past 20 ranks?

Feb 21
0

oh goodness i have no idea what's going on

Feb 21
0

no. Each derm rank counts as its own mini "rank list". Let's say Penn is your number one derm program. You would rank Penn + TY 1, Penn + Ty2, and Penn + TY 3, as your "number one". It's like having your ranks as 1.1, 1.2, 1.3. I hope this makes sense? It's hard to put it into words

Feb 21
0

yes!! that makes sense thank you!

Feb 21
0

sure thing! your prelim/TY rank list can also change with every program. You manually create a new prelim/TY list from scratch with every derm rank, so you can change it as you see fit (for example, if you match on the west coast for derm, you can try to match at a west coast prelim. and, if you were to match at Penn, you can try to maximize your chances of getting a prelim in Philly, etc)

Feb 21
0

oh my god i'm gonna have to make an anki card out of this

Feb 21
0

Also confused - do you only partial match a TY/Prelim if thats all you put? For example, if my list is: derm1+TY1, derm1+TY2, is it still possible to ONLY match partially to the prelim or do i explicitly have to rank TY1/TY2 independently without derm? I am also a dual app so how would I fall down to my second specialty at that rate?

Feb 21
0

if you want the option of still matching at a pgy 1 ONLY in the event that you don't match derm, you have to rank the prelims/TYs. You won't automatically match at one without ranking it. You can rank them in any order

Feb 21
0

Thanks to those of you who explained this..you did a better job than my school
