Sentiment score: 5.2 / 10
Applicants express significant confusion and frustration about University of Utah's multi-stage screening process involving supplemental questions, pre-interview phone calls, and in-person interviews. While the program is acknowledged as a strong top 10-15 dermatology program with excellent faculty and resources, concerns about lack of diversity, Salt Lake City's limited appeal to some applicants, and recent reports of resident dissatisfaction with schedule changes have created mixed sentiment. The program generates substantial discussion due to its selective process and competitive nature.
Changed my rank list again :( Med student from Utah told me the residents are crashing out about significant schedule changes taking effect starting July, they all have a month long night call even though some of the class has already completed call, lost elective time and have required Friday PM clinics now and the leadership has been anatgonistic towards the residents, even refusing to hear out their concerns; too volatile for me and got strange vibes from the coordinator on interview day, she appeared sus, fake nice and overly aggressive which I could tell would be annoying over 3 years. Wondering if anyone else has heard anything or had any insight, not sure if I shouldn't make last minute changes, but this news is major IMO

are you sure that med student wasn't just trying to get you to rank utah lower?
I saw they now have a 5th resident for July this year? did they annoance that somewhere? or how will that spot by filled. is it worth it to reach out to the progam if i have completed an intern year
worth a try, but on the interview date, I have met quit a few people who has done an intern year already, also people who have done another specialty….so likely they might considered first? but worth a try
Joke's on them, they didn't offer me an interview 😎
Thoughts on Utah interview yesterday?
I mean I did an away rotatin there and was in love with the area and people the entire time. Some of the rooms felt "cold" but I just took that as forced neutrality during interview sessions. Hope to match here and hope it snows here on my weekends.
this was my IV experience last year as a rotator! they made a big deal of announcing that they had to stay neutral so I wonder if they just didn't say that this year. I loved this program>I thought they seem very happy? They laugh multiple times during my presentation, and 3/4rooms openly said they like something about my hobbies, but I didn't do an away there, maybe they try to persuade those who didn't rotate there rank them higher? Or I am just lucky, I feel I have that in most of my other interview, except my home program and the place I away rotate, so very interesting phenomenon
Call schedule and parking is sub optimal at best. Facility is exceptional. A lot of talk about having great culture, but I didn't personally feel that or experience that beyond their words. For having so many faculty the interview rooms felt short and overcrowded and its kind of wild to ask people to show up in person to do 4 10 minute interviews imo
Need some help on my ranking, and cant decide which is a better program, Colorado vs Utah vs Arizona?
what are you looking for? I did aways at two of these>Op here. looking for overall experience. What was your away experiences?
Colorado was falling apart right? not sure about updates though so Utah v Arizona seems better?
lots changes in Colorado, and first years look very happy!
lots of nice changes to Colorado it looks like
Colorado seems awesome

Schools that make you do a presentation during interview day like Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Utah, Loma Linda, etc.. what is the purpose and what the presentation should be about? lol
it was actually really nice to have the chance to give a presentation. i just made it about where I grew up, hobbies, where I am now, etc
Has anyone gotten an email from metrohealth of where and when to sent ppt?
I think we just share our screen and present from our computers

Schools that make you do a presentation during interview day (feel free to add on): Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Utah, Loma Linda, Northwell, Florida, VCU, Stony Brook makes you send them a 1 minute presentation,
< the idea of doing a presentation on top of the interview day is such a huge turn off to me. Why add more work to an already stressful day.
stony brook is a 1 min video prior to interview day
I'm so stressed for mine
would hate a presentation. feels like they could assess similar things through interview convos and pls don't make me dance for you (although if i had to I would do it with a smile on my face don't get me wrong)
> Honestly I'd be happy with being able to do a presentation. Assuming the program doesn't require you to cover any specific subjects/topics, it really allows you to shine and talk about what you're passionate about. It lets candidates shine beyond their stats or # of research pubs, just as the interview does. I'm all for more of these non-stat driven opportunities to shine throughout the selection process

does anyone have advice or insight on loma linda derm presentation/powerpoint we make about ourselves?
< Was wondering this for the Utah prezzy?
omg yall have to do the Utah presentation in person?
off topic but presentations are crazy
omg yall have to do the Utah presentation in person?
am I insane to cancel an in-person interview due to financial barriers? they are interview #13 for me
if you like the program, do it. If not, cancel. No reason to make yourself struggle financially for a program you're gonna rank low anyways!
if they're that low i feel like its fine to skip. what are the odds of falling down that low on your list? maybe im optimistic but i feel like that would be pretty uncommon
yes
what school?
is this utah? because I am in the same boat too>I know many people did NOT match with 14 in 23 and in 24!
not matching with 14 is absolutely a personality and interviewing issue, it's insane not to match with 14 in ANY specialty regardless of derm or not
I think there were less than 5 people who didnt match with 10-11 interviews based on NRMP 2024 data, so I don't think anyone knows "many" people who didnt match with 14. Maybe 1-2 over a few years
OP here, yes this is Utah and I would rank them #12 or 13 out of 13.
Update to say that NRMP 2022 and 2024 shows 1 person each year not matching with 14. So the person trying to fear monger is clearly a troll
is there a 2023 charting NRMP data link? I can't find it
theres none, nrmp only releases every 2 years
I would cancel. No point of spending the money esp if you are not thrilled about the program and you have a solid amount of interviews otherwise.
I'd say go to the interview. Honestly life happens and you never know how far down you'll match. Is it likely you won't match with 12? no. But why take the chance? You worked so hard for this, and if even improving your chances of matching a bit could possibly prevent you from having to go through this whole process again, I say swipe that CC and go for it. Maybe the interview changes your mind and makes you rank that program higher. >Totally agree!! + 1
agree and will add that I did an in-person interview this cycle that actually did make me like the program more than I thought I would and I'm glad I went

Does Utah have a supplemental?
Does anybody know when Utah usually sends out notifications? It's the last one im waiting on and hoping to solidify schedule.
Has anyone heard anthing about when Utah will release away offers? It looks it was a little bit faster last year
Anyone select their own dates for Utah instead of using the pre-selected ones? They didn't have anything for the dates I wanted so I put my own but wondering if they won't accept those and just go for people who can do the ones they pre-selected. -->I did a combo of this as only one of their dates worked for me. We will see
Didn't apply to Utah but did this for another school and have yet to hear anything back one way or the other
for anyone wondering I emailed the coordintor and asked my question and told her I could add more dates if needed, and she said they consider applicant preferred dates. 2 days later heard back and got my #1 choice spot for my perferred dates....I think maybe emailing the coordinator helped my app
