Northwestern McGaw/NMH/VA-IL (Medicine-Dermatology)

Northwestern Med-Derm

Sentiment score: 6.5 / 10

Applicants are seeking logistical clarification about the Northwestern Med-Derm program, particularly regarding interview scheduling, dress code, and how the interview counts toward ranking multiple positions (Med-Derm, Advanced Derm, and potentially Categorical IM or Prelim). There is some confusion and conflicting information about program structure and requirements, but no negative sentiment about the program itself.

Can we make a list in the cell to the right of places whose derm interview automatically counts as your interview for a prelim/TY year too?

#28292025–2026 DermFeb 21

Penn State, Northwestern, Yale (kind of), Georgetown, Ohio State, Brown, Cleveland Clinic, UPMC, UTHSC (tennessee), Zucker/Northwell, Emory, Mizzou, WVU, Dartmouth

what about northwestern regular Derm/peds derm> NW med derm counts for advanced derm NW position + med derm position. NOT prelim. You can ask to be considered for categorical IM, but that was not guaranteed by just applying.

Exact wording: "We are very excited to welcome you to the Northwestern University combined Medicine-Dermatology interviews, which also serves as interviews for either the categorical Medicine and/or advanced Dermatology tracks, if you have applied to either of those Northwestern programs. "

For those who received II for Northwestern med-derm, the email indicated that the interview will also serve as our advanced derm interview. Does this mean that we will have two separate programs to rank (both advanced derm and med-derm)?

#18832025–2026 DermFeb 21

only if you applied to both on ERAS

Feb 21

Only if you applied to both on ERAS. I just emailed to ask if I can still apply to their IM program so that I can rank it. I will let you know what they say.

schools that didn't II aways tab is brutal. what happened this year

#18462025–2026 DermFeb 21

some schools that are known to interview all their rotators changed it up this year and didn't invite all their rotators if you're going off the schools that didn't II aways tab. i wonder if that's a new thing this year or if it jsut changes year by year??

its like whack a mole, unpredictable behavior

Feb 21

Overall it seems that schools are offering less interviews as a whole, I'm guessing now it makes getting interviews from aways less likely

Can someone confirm if you received northwestern med-derm should we expect the gen derm invite separately? Or does getting med-derm automatically mean you got gen-derm too and can rank that separately?

#12922025–2026 DermFeb 21

does anyone know a current resident and can ask

Feb 21

If you got med-derm it counts as your categorical interview. It said so in the confirmation email I received when I confirmed my slot. "The December 9th interview day will also serve as your interview for the Preliminary Medicine program and the Categorical Dermatology program."

If you got a Northwestern Med-Derm IV does that also count for gen derm or do you need to get invited for both to be considered for both?

#12652025–2026 DermFeb 21

My understanding is that Northwestern, as most programs with different tracks, is only allowing people to apply/interview to 1 track (Gen Derm vs Med Derm vs Ped Derm)

Feb 21
0

Do they say this somewhere? For example Penn states you can apply to multiple tracks

Feb 21
0

I applied to multiple tracks within the same program and for most programs a PC reached out to me asking to only select 1

Feb 21
0

wait i'm confused by this, I thought we could apply to any tracks we wanted? where are you getting this info that we're only allowed to apply to one?

Feb 21
0

I think this is program dependent

Feb 21
0

ok but my question was to the person saying NW only allows applying to one track, I'm not seeing that anywhere on their website/wasn't aware of that

Feb 21
0

I've heard that they're mostly doing this to people who applied gen derm and peds derm; they're trying to weed out people who are not geniunly interested in Ped Derm and only applying because Peds Derm is less popular and may be seen as an easier way to get in for people who do not have an actual intention to pursue peds derm

Feb 21
0

ahh ok I see, that makes sense. thank you!!

Feb 21

yes i know people from prior cycles who interviewed gen derm and med derm at programs (altho not NW so unsure)

Feb 21

Did anyone get a peds derm interview who didnt apply for peds derm?

#20722021-2022 DermMar 21

confirmed by the coordinator that a NW Med-Derm interview is also an advanced Derm interview for all those still wondering

#7792021-2022 DermMar 21

#7472021-2022 DermMar 21

I know it's a long shot but if there is anyone interviewing for Northwestern med-derm that would be willing/able to swap I would be so so happy. I need to swap from 1/13 to 1/6.

On the day before Northwestern Med Derm interviews, is it really business casual (ie no tie for guys)? Like preinterview clothes?

#23582019-2020 DermMar 23

Don't overthink it. I would dress they way they suggest in the email.
