What anonymous posters said

Several posts describe confusion and speculation about the program going unmatched and requiring SOAP in a recent cycle, with many attributing it to an administrative or rank-list error rather than lack of interest. Multiple posters also mention inconsistency in who received application supplements, while some described interview days as well organized with positive overall impressions.

Is indiana offering 4 or 5 spots this year? The email said 4 spots total (2 categorical and 3 advanced) so I wasnt sure which was correct < good question, i was confused about this also < it's 5 spots (2 cat, 3 adv), they add an extra adv spot every 3rd year

What are all the derm programs that have categorical intern years? So far I just have Ohio State, Mayo AZ, Mayo MN, Indiana, Cleveland Clinic, Utah?

#23212020-2021 DermMar 22

another question on that note--let's say I'm interviewing at a program with both categorical and advanced spots (like ohio state, indiana, mayo rochester, etc.)--if it's a huge priority for me to spend my prelim year with my SO/family/whatever, can I rank the advanced spot high and the categorical spot low? <Nobody sees your rank list, you can do whatever you want

Why do you want to train in Indiana and Iowa bruh<i don't

#3822020-2021 DermMar 22

thanks Indiana for clearly using a 250 step 1 screen that was not communicated anywhere on the website (friends who were 250+ got supplement invite, I did not). Why can't programs be transparent about these hard cutoffs? It really leaves a sour taste as someone with a not super high step 1 who is also in a low income bracket and paying thousands on these apps with student loan money. Sorry all just had to vent!

Does anyone who rotated/interviewed at OSU remember whether they have "admin/academic time" if so how much?

#22682019-2020 DermMar 23

What did people that interviewed at Indiana think? I don't know why they went unmatched - I think it was an error with the match list submission and not truly lack of interest.

<- the chair felt a bit arrogant/douchey but I heard that the rest of the faculty are super nice and it makes up for it. strong research and relatively low COL in Indy. I'm also shocked they went unmatched last year, and it was almost definitely a technical error since I know people who ranked it #1

For those that interviewed at indiana, what time was lunch and what time were you done at?

#21342019-2020 DermMar 23

Our group went late but it was ~12:30. Sat in a large room with tables, mixed seating between applicants and faculty. You're free to leave whenever, there's no pressure. Some people left even before lunch for flights and they were understanding. I ate some food and left around 1 no problem.

how many derm spots went through SOAP last year? Is there a way to check? Also is it true that Miami had to go through a SOAP spot?

#19692019-2020 DermMar 23

IU had to soap all 4 spots i think << IU is Indiana University?

Mar 23

yes

Mar 23

Mar 23

i saw it on the 2018-2019 spreadsheet around match time

Anyone know what happened with the IU program? I heard it may have been an ERAS submission error since they are otherwise regarded as a good program. Has any derm program ever had to SOAP all spots?

Mar 23
0

So I still have a chance to match into derm?

Mar 23
0

meh weird if it was a error cause I heard they matched like 1 of the spots and others were SOAP

Mar 23

ooooh i didnt know they matched 1 << didn't they match someone from Harvard? Was that through SOAP?

Mar 23
0

yes i think so

Mar 23

Mar 23

how long a leave do you have to take for a DUI? Not that I'm planning on getting one lol

Mar 23
0

LMAO, also its amazing they let him/her come back

Mar 23

wait you're saying the Harvard student that matched at IU got a DUI?

Mar 23

didn't UMASS or UCONN match all IMGs, was that through SOAP or intentional? << I heard from a few reliable sources that UMass intentionally matched 2 IMGs and took 1 resident who was switching from another specialty at UMass. They did not SOAP and from their website it looks like one of the first times ever they didn't take at least 1 of their own students. Not to say non-traditional applicants don't deserve a shot, but there are many fantastic US MD seniors who didn't match last year.

Indiana matched 1 of their 5 spots last year without the SOAP. They have 5 spots every 3rd year (back to 4 this year).

Mar 23
0

so what's wrong with the program? How come they had to SOAP? <I rotated there - there was one mean attending but everything else seemed good - not sure how I’d explain it being the only program that needed to SOAP and having 80% of its spots go unfilled (before the SOAP)
