Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

2 entries

1. Faculty and interviewers were so warm and kind. They seem to be genuinely support of residents and their interests. Interviews were conversational and it was evident that they took the time to read my application and ask about my interests/hobbies. Residents also seemed super tight-knit and hang out alot outside of clinics.

2. Amazing program! Truly a gem, and I'm sad that I didn't match here. Faculty are world-class and leaders, great subspecialty clinic, and nice clinic spaces. The program leadership are all very welcoming and friendly, and you can tell that they really enjoy each other's company. Would highly recommend to anyone!

UW Optional Supplement

#8452017-2018 DermMar 23

"optional" x5

Mar 23
0

It says 100 words max but then the box to type your answer says 500 characters max. Should we keep it to only 500 characters then? That's hard to do!

Mar 23
0

Is there a hard stop in terms of the box when it comes to characters?

Mar 23
0

It lets you type over the limit but then it tells you in red how many characters over you are. I don't know if it'll actually let you submit. I kept it to under 500 since the directions on the site state both 100 words and 500 characters. Also nothing is ever optional...lol

Mar 23
0

Doesnt let you submit unless strict 500 character limit met

Mar 23
0

So I guess the 100 words max limit in the prompt is an error? Just FYI, 500 characters = 250 words, not 100 words.

Mar 23
0

Nope it's like 3 sentences max and around 100 words (depends on your word choice I guess)

Mar 23

ugh it feels like a waste of time applying here. so much inbreeding at UWashingtom

Mar 23
0

Oh wow. I had no idea. 6 out of the 10 current residents are UW graduates and 3 out of the 4 spots went to UW students last year

Mar 23
0

Also FYI one of their four spots this year will go to someone who has already finished intern year

Mar 23

Is this University of Washington or University of Wisconsin? Did they mail the supplement?| University of Washington. Not all applicants received the supplement :(

Mar 23

Wait, so the University of Washington supplemental did not go out to all applicants?

UWisc invite today (10/9)

#8042017-2018 DermMar 23

|stats? x2 (also internal/external?) I got an interview: external, step 1 250s, step2CK 270s, 15+ publications

Mar 23

Thanks: any connection to the area, geographic or otherwise?| no connections really, i feel so lucky

Mar 23

invite with average scores, decent app but midwestern ties

Mar 23

Dang, I keep missing out on the invites. I know its early and illogical to freak out, but for some reason its sad x3

Mar 23

Last year for UWisc invites went out one day (10/13), and then rejections the next (10/14) :(

Mar 23
0

Yep, you called it

Mar 23

I need some rejections so I can validate my mediocrity as a candidate x3

If we were already rejected from Wake, is that a bad sign for the rest of the application cycle? Any previous year applicants able to comment?

#7992017-2018 DermMar 23

Did rejections already go out?

Mar 23
0

see above comment about LORs as method of first round app evaluation

Mar 23
0

Wow. So if we got rejected so fast, it means our letters suck? That is somehow more unsettling to me than if it had been a Step/AOA screen...| are you seriously expecting an interview invite from every derm program? you're not special. get over it

Mar 23
0

Yikes... calm down.

Mar 23
0

Probably statisically the majority of us will be getting 6-11 interviews or so, so it's OK to be rejected a lot

Mar 23
0

My question was more whether it bodes poorly to be in the first round of rejections. Obviously majority of applicants will be rejected by majority of programs. I am fully aware that I am a thoroughly average applicant.

Mar 23
0

Hey man, don't mind Mr. Crankypants over here. We're all in this together

Mar 23
0

I doubt that being rejected in first wave means you suck the most....they probably split all the apps into chunks and go through them in groups, and decide which out of each group they want to interview/reject

Mar 23
0

<-I got a first round of Wake Forest rejections but UWisc invite, so I don't think it means anything,

Mar 23
0

That makes me feel better! Thanks!

Mar 23
0

Are you talking Univ of Washington or UWisc for the invite?

Mar 23
0

UWisc - UWash won't go out for a while

Mar 23

you guys really need to try and not take every rejection personally. If you apply to every program, even if you get 15 interviews which is absolutely outstanding, you still get >100 rejections. if you take every one personally, you are in for a very long and depressing application cycle. even applicants with the most amazing stats get tons of rejections..... there are SO many things that go into the decision besides stats, different programs value different things and they can only interview so many people. hang in there!

Mar 23
0

Current derm resident here who's involved in reviewing applications. Believe me, when I say, getting rejected does not mean you have a weak application. Even tippy top applicants will get >50% rejections and most of you will (if you applied to all programs), get > 90% rejections. Programs don't interview many applicants and tend to preference people they know (rotators, home students, etc.) or those who have regional or local connections (especially for non-top programs). If you're Wake Forest, for instance, do you really think that top Harvard applicant who grew up in California is trying to move to Winston-Salem. Would you want to waste one of your say, 25 interview spots on that person (no idea how many they interview).

Mar 23
0

The people reviewing applications are certainly not taking chances with their limited interview spots, especially when they know people are applying to 100+ programs. Most applicants who are rejected are probably more upset about the concept of rejection and what that means to their anxiety and ego, not really about the program itself.

Did anyone receive a rejection from U Wisconsin yet? The interview tab seems to indicate that some rejections went out yesterday (10/9)

#7982017-2018 DermMar 23

True, anybody?

Mar 23

The website to sign up for interview spots shows that they're all filled

Mar 23

Ok, but has anyone received an actual rejection?

Official U Wisconsin rejection via email x26

#7972017-2018 DermMar 23

Over 500 applications? I thought the average was ~400 last year.

Mar 23

you also need to count non-US seniors and IMGs which i think makes it aorund 500

Has anyone who is an external applicant gotten an interview from Medical College of Wisconsin or University of Pennsylvania?

#6822017-2018 DermMar 23

Haven't heard anything! |

Did Medical College of Wisconsin actually send invites? There's no method of contact or interview dates listed, and they've historically sent invites much later than 10/17.

#6662017-2018 DermMar 23

I would believe it, but only because I got a rejection on 10/10, so it makes me think there were probably interviews sent out too. Plus, the interview person said they were internal, so manybe only internal interviews are out so far? Hard to tell. In perusing the chitchat archives, looks like people did get interviews and all the slots are filled up. Lots of people (>20 noted) got rejections on 10/9 and 10/10.

Mar 23
0

I haven't heard from them one way or the other. So weird how that happens!

Mar 23
0

Wait are you sure the spots filled for Medical College of WI? I see on the archive that the spots filled for University of WI but that's a different program.| oh snap, youre right, I am not sure now? Do you think the interview tab is incorrect?

Mar 23
0

| I think it might have been highlighted when the troll stuff was going on and it got carried through because no one seems to have posted about invites there. Maybe they've sent internal invites but I don't think external. Anyone out there who can attest to this one way or the other?

Mar 23
0

I know for a fact that only MCW internal and MCW away rotators got interviews so far. I doubt External/ non-rotator interviews were sent out this early

Mar 23
0

Ok excellent, thanks for the info, we will leave the data in the interview tab. just werent sure if it was a troll from before that got carried over.

For people getting interviews at "random" locations (e.g. cali applicant getting Iowa or Wisconsin) did you have any ties there, write a specific PS line, or do an away rotation nearby?
