UC Davis is a moderately competitive dermatology program that generates significant applicant interest with ~50 interviews conducted. Applicants view it as a solid mid-tier California program with strong research opportunities, though it ranks below top-tier programs like UCSF and Stanford. Concerns include program stability (historical resident dismissal), faculty professionalism issues, and commuting between sites, though some applicants value it highly for those committed to staying in California.
Fame & Shame
2025–2026 Derm
1 entry💬1. Very good culture, attendings and residents seemed very happy during interview. PD seems to advocate for residents. Not as much to do in Sac but very nice surrounding areas to visit (Napa!)
trying to find the person who was willing to switch a later UC Davis DermPath rotation for 7/27-8/7. message me at 714-392-2986 pls!

Still stuck on UC Davis vs UCLA vs USC. Any thoughts?
UC Davis!
why?> More protected time/chill than others, more personalized mentorship, less commuting between sites
don't listen to this wild advice 😂😂😂 southern Cali >>>>>> Sacramento
lol yeah this is an odd take unless you have fam/connections out in sacramento.
this is 100% someone trying to get you to rank the LA programs lower lmao. UC davis def does not have more 'protected time' and does have quite a bit commuting between sites?
yea Davis and Sac sucks ass
What were the vibes of UC Davis interview day? was it pretty standard?
Anyone with UC Davis tomorrow see a link for the welcome session on thalamus yet?
nope
for anyone that had/has their UC Davis interview, is there a welcome session or do we just jump straight into the first interview? my thalamus schedule just shows the first interview. also the email says there will be time with residents at the conclusion of the day but i dont see that in my schedule either
I think there's like a very brief hello at the beginning!
do you have a specific link for a general welcome room in your schedule? all im seeing is the first interviewer room
Were we ever sent a link for the opening session and resident room for interview day?
not that i've seen in my email or on thalamus
I had a "Welcome" for 15 mins on my thalamus before 1st interview
okay ty, i dont see that on mine so i'll email PC

Does anyone know if any interviews are in person this year?
there def will be some - probably similar to last year maybe a few more
can we start listing them in the cell beside pls
should we make an interveiw detials tab????????
Anyone know when Mississippi is releasing?
Confirmed virtual : UC Davis, UCLA-harbor, UCSD, Penn State
Anyone hear back from UC Davis Dermpath yet, besides the pre-req email?
would you rather have all honors and 0 research, or 1-2 honors with 20+ pubs/research items??
Feel like it depends on all of the other factors of your application (Step score, mentors/letters, med school prestige, etc.) ofc having all honors and lots of research would be better than either so it's hard to compare those scenarios without looking at everything else
does med school prestige really matter if youre not planning on going to a t10 derm program? (in terms of MD applicants)
i'd rather have a well balanced app w some honors and some pubs, than all honors 0 pubs but thats me
med school prestige is factored more for certain programs (defintely lower on the list in terms of factors assessed), agree about having a more well-rounded app
>the neurotic 270+ step 2, all honors, 20+ research derm applicant is few and far between. Believe in yourself - not all applicants are perfect. theyre average :). Aim for as many honors as you feasibly can, handful of pubs, show people you're likeable. that'll take you farther than grades and research at the end of the day
personality and fit is huge
is a 270+ strong research applicant really few and far between lol it seems like this is not uncommon?
I've heard of quite a few people with these stats, I think it's also important to consider mentors and who you know since that can influence one's chances of matching
agreed, and connections from away rotations make a huge difference in terms of "networking" as well. the loudest ones are the ones that have the best stats, but dont get into your head about it! > more good thoughts like this please, maybe we're all just delusional
also want to say, I feel on reddit and these spreadsheets, we tend to see people on the extremes in terms of stats and research while the "average" students who match tend to not put a bunch of stuff here making it seem like applicants are extraordinary
connections
scores in 95% of cases, excluding the "top" programs which virtue signal about evaluating applicants holistically (looking at u UCSF). It's hilarious how they say they don't have cutoffs for board scores, but they magically end up matching residents with only the most insane stats >how do you know this info? They don't release stats publically, and UCSF seems to match many students who dont come from T5 programs.
Current R3/R4s come from: UCSD, UC Davis, UMich, UCSF, Hopkins, Emory, UCSF, Vandy, Northwestern, UCSF, Hopkins, UCSF, Penn. Idk seems pretty high ranking for programs (excluding the California bias)
You can also see what they tell their own students about required stats for matching (https://meded.ucsf.edu/student-services/specialty-information-and-advising#Dermatology), for example in their table "How important is each the following for admission to a competitive program?", where honors, AOA, and research are highly recommended

I feel like I need a cigarette. Did someone confirm if UC Davis is full? last year they didn't send out acceptances until 5/1...
my friend got an email from them saying they're full

im still not over the wake forest rejection >:( yeah i'm pretty sure markdown syntax doesn't render properly in google sheets. ugh not more gpt jokes , oh no chatgpt is back in the chat 🙄 >> There is zero vibes in Miami , a bunch of ego inflated attendings and weirdo residents that do not fit the extroverted / Miami energy of the city whatsoever.
do the residents at davis have hobbies?? lol and i do agree with the mohs factory being mayo
hated every second of reading this
did not know WF was such a golden program

thoughts on uc davis? seems like another school that only matches top schools similar to other uc's
How would you rank the following program: UC Davis, USC, UCLA, UC Irvine? Much appreciated!
anybody able to schedule Davis or Brown yet?
Some posts are shown because their comments mention this program.
