What happens when you are accepted for an away rotation during Nov-Dec and the school starts sending interviews out in November? Are you still likely to get an interview although you havent had your away rotation yet? Specifically for Tulane
yes you'll get one
I have a Tulane away offer 9/28-10/23. Anyone wanting to switch for 8/31-9/25?
any advice for tulane away? shadowing vs clinical?
5/1 did you get accepted on 4/24? just found out all spots are filled and didnt get a spot :( idk what wrong i did
Y'all who's gonna start the convo re what schools are best to do aways at? :Z open to hearing opinions. Some schools have stopped gauraunteeing IIs to away candidates, others have begun to prioritize internal/away candidates much more... what yall think? :)
Rush interviewed everyone who did an away this year, didn't happen previous years but thought it would be helpful to know! Great program!
theres a tab in the 25-26 sheet about aways that didnt interview rotators
i do not rec OSU, it is an awful away. rude faculty, rude residents. you will be miserable. easy away to get but occupy your time with another school
< echoing this. they interview all rotators but they are an interesting bunch..
I think the top program that guarantees an interview if you do an away is Miami. But they only take 4-8 rotators per year so if you get one you can be pretty well assured they like your app. They usually match 1-2 away rotators also despite having 30+ internals per year. Emory also guarantees an away. As does Tulane. Some texas programs do as well
Texas doesn't seem to match non-Texans often tho
UTSW does occasionally
Research years that guarantee match? How do I find these?
I think cornell is like the only one
Cornell does not match every research fellow
cornell barely matches 1 fellow, if any, per year (correct me if im wrong)
is there a list somewhere?
I don't think anything or anyone can guarantee you a match
pretty much none? imo if an institution matches back a good amount of their RY students I would take that as a positive
larkin palm springs research year with Dr. Skopit guarantees match
i know a cornell fellow who didnt match anywhere
Tulane and UAB are guaranteed
cornell does not match their own fellows very often
larkin south miami research year with Dr. Skopit guarantees match
Cornell does not match every research fellow this is absolutely false about cornell, they are not loyal> larkin south miami research year with Dr. Skopit guarantees match
The Maryland RY seems pretty guaranteed as well, not back to Maryland per say but just derm
MUSC
cornell does not match their own fellows very often>> Larkin South Miami home of the pay2play derm position has an unpaid RY which they will guarantee your acceptance the following year in their wonderful program
What RYs guarantee a match?
prob none for sure, maybe sinai bc their match is all RY fellows (still competitive, but you're competing against less people i suppose tbh)
heard uab/tulane have good match rate for their fellows. ultimately it's going to depend on your relationship with your mentor!

If I want to match anywhere, where should I rotate? aka which programs interview mainly rotators?
Most of them interview rotators>emory>UF>tulane>Baylor Scott and White Temple
musc
thank you!
want to reiterate that it's getting harder to get these away rotations so you might not have a choice but check the schools that didnt II aways from this year and last year
Would add penn state and jefferson to this list but can't edit the cell for some reason
i believe wayne state also does
musc
thank you!
i believe wayne state also does
I thought tulane was 11/17, no?> yes I believe so
is there a list of which programs have in person interviews this year
Tulane, hopkins, (feel free to add more), yale, vandy, louisville, USC, miami, mayo Jax
basically most Florida programs (not all but like 50%), Cincinnati, MUSC, Utah, Mayo AZ, dartmouth
As in derm interviews are in person? Or prelim/TY
derm baby
oh for fuvks sake > LMFAOOO

What MD programs do out of match offers?
Applied last year with a similar question... none that I know of personally out of all the MD programs. Its a match violation. Not even the "niche" programs like the two in Puerto Rico match outside the match (however they take 99% from PR with the exception of one student from Tufts last year). The one DO program that matches outside the match pretty consistently is St. John's Episcopal (3 residents per year). I wouldn't be surprised if other programs with 1 resident per year didn't already know who they were going to take prior to the cycle though, effectively providing an "outside the match hunch" to the applicant.
I remember there was someone at Sinai who was offered an out of match offer in February (this was back in 2022 i believe) and did not take it at insistence of Sinai's home department. I'm not sure if this story is true or not. I would imagine though that if a program did give someone an out of match offer, and the program would then withdraw from the match for that year. That would not make it a match violation, right?
yep!
Of note Tulane does offer a research fellowship every 2 years starting after completion of an ACGME recognized TY/internship in Medicine or Surgery. It is reserved for 1 individual under Dr. Boh (the chair of the department). When you sign up it is with the understanding you are guaranteed into their program after two years of grinding papers. It's pretty competetive to land. Their fellow just matched to Tulane Derm this past cycle. https://medicine.tulane.edu/dermatology/fellowship/clinical-research

is tulane derm interview on the away or after?
its after , if you away rotated there... when you show up on interview day in-person, the mini-5-min interviews are all just chill "catching-up" interviews where you just yap. It's really nice. I'd say Dr. Boh is the true interview test that day... she makes it VERY VERY aparent that they want people who actually want to be in New Orleans and will try to tease out if you're ranking them highly or not.
this is sooo helpful tysm
when you say its after is it like during the normally scheduled interview days or its at the end of the rotation?> all their interviews are on the actual interview days. Think they had 2 days last year.

Anyone know which prelim programs will keep you on as categorical if you don't match derm?
SLU
Tulane seems like a safe bet
signaling tips for a program that guarantees interview after an away?? like tulane or UM for example
