Sentiment score: 5.8 / 10

Applicants discuss University of Florida's interview logistics (presentation requirements, scheduling, timing), with mixed impressions of program culture and reputation. The program appears selective, heavily favoring internal rotators and away rotators over external applicants, with concerns about location (Gainesville) but recognition of strong dermpath and medical dermatology focus.

Thoughts on UConn vs Wayne? Both programs that I'm not too familar with (OOS for both) - needed some help with ranking> I'd do Wayne over UConn

#28822025–2026 DermFeb 21

not OP but you could expand on why? UConn has better Mohs matches (UCLA, UF, etc.) although not sure if this is because there is more Mohs interest over there... interested to hear your thoughts

Feb 21
0

Mohs matches are not indicative of how good a program is. There are also people from UConn in prior years who went unmatched in Mohs

Feb 21
0

family? where are you from originally? priorities? vibes at tge two programs are very different

Feb 21
0

from the west coast (most family from there), both programs have mohs fellowship now, honestly just looking for good training and want to be a solid derm, may want to pursue mohs in the future - could you expand on vibes at the places and which you would rank higher?

Feb 21
0

As an away rotator at UConn, I can say that Dr. Feng (Mohs) had said he prefers to take people NOT from UConn internally as it's better to have more variety in trains of thought or w/e. Not sure if that will sway you. Otherwise, Wayne has more SOC, community family vibes between residents and faculty. UConn is semi-similar but there is an air of heirarchy there especially as an rotator...

Feb 21

Wayne state has also not historically taken their own for Mohs...

Thoughts on programs that interview all rotators?

#20232025–2026 DermFeb 21

depends some places like UF and Emory that interview all their rotators have a good chance of matching there because they are very selective on who they pick and they have a good track record of matching rotators, also they don't have too many rotators - Conversely, programs like UConn who have a ton of rotators and interview all of them, you don't really know if you have a good shot, also based on tea on this spreadsheet there's nepotism rumors, research fellows, etc. so your chances at a program like that may be lower and can give applicants false hope

Feb 21
0

anyone know about upmc?

Feb 21
0

UF interviews most of their rotators but also interviews a significant amount of non-rotators, plus away/gold seem to weigh less post-interview there. Certainly better than a lot of other programs but there are programs that only interview internals and more heavily weigh away/gold/etc post-interview as well. ^ It's the best when a program is very selective with away rotators and then interviews them all because it means you already have a high shot at being ranked. Places that take a ton of rotators and intreview all as a courtesy = waste of time for everyone and waste of hope.

Feb 21
0

what counts as a high number of away rotators? 20+? 30+?

Feb 21
0

some programs take 6 aways per month so do with that what you will

Feb 21
0

great bc they give you an interview! Not great if it doesn't correlate with true shot at a decent place on the rank list. But there's no true way to know and we will never know how the pie is made as applicants so whatever

Feb 21
0

Reapplicant here, from what ive seen from my away rotations and who they matched: my experience, they definitely take at least 1 away rotator depending on number of spots the program has. If they have internals + away rotators with better stats or from better schools with decent personalities, might not go your way. if you are one of those rotators with great stats and they don't have too many internals then you're in a great place to possibly match there

Feb 21
0

also depends on how the internals rank them - can't assume that all of the internals actually want to go there

Feb 21
0

. on OP's question, what programs interview all rotators?

Feb 21
1

Harbor-

Feb 21

not true. would say it's more accurate to say that all applicants interviewed will have done an away rotation. similar to Kaiser LA

Feb 21
0

where do we find number of away rotators a prgram takes per year?

Feb 21
0

theres a sidebar on some of the VSLO apps that show how many they accept per month, and then from there you can roughly calculate

How many are interviewing at UF?

#20002025–2026 DermFeb 21

heard 10 plus their aways/homes. Should be 40. (30 away/home students + 10 non-away students)

Feb 21
0

I heard a little less than half of their interviews are non-internals (away/home), my vibe from speaking to UF ppl is that they don't really weigh signals after giving the interview but golds/aways/internals have a far higher likelihood of being interviewed fwiw

UF is like emory if you dont do an away the chances are vvvv low...> they offered me an away for a month I didnt apply to (but I couldnt go) so I had false hope

What programs have explicit requirements on their website (not residency explorer or Freida) about GPA requirements? For example, I saw that GW requires being in the top 1/3 of your class, what about programs have this kind of language on their website?

#5382025–2026 DermFeb 21

Not on their website but I've heard cook county has a step cut off that's decently high (it's 260).

Tea on which programs almost always interview their away rotators? (either on the away or invite them later on), I know so far Emory, UF...

#5202025–2026 DermFeb 21

Miami, Tulane> Tennessee

Feb 21

so for these programs, do you not need to signal them (gold or silver) if you do an away rotation there?

Feb 21
0

you'll have to ask them, ik programs also change from year to year, signals are still fairly new

Feb 21
0

you def still should silver signal your aways at the least unless specifically told otherwise, but in my experience they all still wanted a signal some aways wanted silver and told us to save gold for others

Feb 21

UF versus USF?

#4052025–2026 DermFeb 21

UF is in the middle of nowhere vs. USF is in Tampa. in terms of program strength they're probably pretty on par.

Feb 21

I would say UF>USF. UF is big on dermpath and medical derm.
