Sentiment score: 3.2 / 10

Mount Sinai's dermatology program is perceived as highly selective and heavily favoring internal candidates, research fellows, and those with prior rotation experience at the institution. Applicants express frustration about limited opportunities for external candidates and concerns about the program's selectivity criteria, though it maintains a reputation as a competitive top-tier program. There are also mentions of program leadership changes, interview logistics questions, and some negative commentary about the program's culture and candidate selection practices.

Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

3 entries

1. almost pointless to apply here if you aren't a research fellow or have a strong connection. nepotism is worth more than anything else here

2. I was offered an away in June and had to decline it because in their offer email they stated that because of the "number of attendings we would be rotating with" we should not expect letters of recommendation nor ask for them.

💬1. seriously, why would ANYONE waste a signal here if you didnt do a RY with the department? 90-100% of their spots go to their own fellows.

0

Does anyone know which RY programs pay PGY-1 salary? Mount Sinai does, right? A lot of the "paid" ones are like 20-30k stipends...

#792026-2027 DermApr 3

honestly most are even less than that - I got 12.5k and know of several people who got less

Apr 4

That's honestly as good as it'll get. I got 40k and that seems pretty good to me

Which programs are known rotation mills?

USC

Even more important than rotation mills are programs that only take their own research fellows. While rotation mills will still interview and match a percentage of their rotators (with variability between programs), programs that only take their research fellows will rotate and interview many of their rotators, but ultimately offer little to no chance of matching for those outside their fellows.

Rotating, signaling, and interviewing at these programs is a waste of time and is performative; they already know who they plan to take for the upcoming cycle

Can those who took a RY share how to go about searching for these? I'm from a pretty good program and am conflicted whether it's best to do a RY at a smaller, lower tier school I'd love to match at (in my home state) or do it at a 'top-tier' program. Anyone know of any programs that have great RY outcomes?

#35812025–2026 DermApr 1

would definitely recommend the smaller, lower tier school that you're interested in matching at and this is coming from someone who did their RY at a top-tier program with many other research fellows

Anyone have thoughts on Mount Sinai RY (other than the internal bias for their RY candidates, are they decent output, good mentorship?)

Apr 1
0

imo one of the best RYs you can do. several of their RY students presented at AAD this year. your mentor will be a derm expert and if you work hard and get along with everyone you have a very good chance of matching there

imo one of the best RYs you can do. several of their RY students presented at AAD this year. your mentor will be a derm expert and if you work hard and get along with everyone you have a very good chance of matching there>> Presenting to AAD aint shit lmao the only benefit is that they have strong linkage to match internal.

There are some cutie academic gay dermatologists though (looking at you, Markus Boos)

Mar 28

agree, there should be a bare minimum level of professionality held by people representing the profession. Public trust in the health system and physicians has been eroded over the past 5yr and sorry to hurt everyones feelings, but people such as this are only further damaging that (can this)>> Yes Dr. Boos is the best! I'm talking more people like the sirdermzalot on IG and some of the other wanna be influencers on tik tok talking about sword swallowing in between their rants

Mar 28

a certain upcoming PGY2 resident is very cringe and borderline unprofessional about all the gay stuffs he posts...> I'm sorry but what's wrong with wearing a speedo? It's giving the whole discourse on female doctors wearing bikinis >sirdermzalot is the nicest and kindest person ever, leave him alone

Mar 28

i see nothing wrong with speedos and being yourself. a happy doctor = better care :)

Mar 28

but if a female resident/attending posts in a bikini.....>> No literally. Post whatever you want, but having a physician social media page with your cheeks and balls out in a speedo and posed naked with the blur APP is CRAZY work. Supposed to sit here and pretend its normal lol have some level of decorum. As a gay man it gives me second hand embarrassment bc it makes us look vapid and air headed, if a female physician were to do that she would get judged and canceled yet bc you're a guy that sleeps w other guys suddenly its ok? like what lmao

Are Sinai med students not strong? Their match list for derm always surprises me. I thought they had a good school name, but they barely ever have any ever matches to programs outside of Sinai.

#35002025–2026 DermMar 25

might be bc since they only take their own research years its less reciprocal for other schools to take them

Mar 25

they literally matched 1 person to Harvard and 1 person to UCLA outside of the 2 students at Sinai. not sure what this person is talking about

Does anybody know anything about Mount Sinai Chicago's prelim program? I can't find much about it.

#31592025–2026 DermMar 2

why is it better to do a prelim over a TY if you don't match? < it isnt. It's better to do a TY. Unless you want to do IM back up; then the only benefit of a prelim of your first year of IM is done. Otherwise TY is easier, more chill, and usually allows you more time to do aways and research

#30112025–2026 DermFeb 24

Looked up the cook county PGY3 that got dismissed. Very sad that this can happen. How are people getting dismissed from derm programs? Have heard of many residents now getting dismissed, for example at Mount Sinai recently too
