Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

5 entries

1. Very evident that this is a nepotism heavy program. They haven't taken their RY fellows in the past, so the program has a lot of pressure to match them. Highly favor PhD applicants, especially those from home, as you can tell from their resident roster that has 1 PhD every single year. The program coordinator was passive aggressive at times, and they handed out way too many away rotations when they knew from the beginning of the cycle who their picks were. This was evident because the interview attestation form was given out super late near the end of the cycle in February when most programs had you sign it before the interview day. No socials either, which is very rare for dermatology interviews that don't have second looks.

2. I enjoyed rotating here, but it's 100% a rotation mill. Sure, you'll get an interview from your rotation, but as many others have said on this spreadsheet UConn already knows who they want before interviewing. Don't waste your time if you're not a Quinnipac/UConn student, UConn research fellow, family friends with the program coordinator, or married to one of the residents

3. Unfortunately the rumors from the 2025-2026 spreadsheet are true. They already knew who they wanted prior to away rotators starting. They matched their internals (MD-PhD, two RYs and their fellow). They offer over 30+ away rotations and some in dermatopathology but it was clearly for show since they knew their rank list from their home and affiliate programs (fellows/Quinnipiac). I would be very cautious using an away here because it is based on nepotism. There is one very powerful faculty member at this institution that is very Pro-Trump and Pro-Zionist to the point where their scribe warns you beforehand working with them to not say anything and to let it happen. As a rotator I personally witnessed this faculty member get into a debate about politics while in the room with the patient who held an opposing view. There are no words to express the disappointment many rotators had for this away rotation seeing the match list prove these rumors true. Protect your feelings and do not trust this program to not match based on nepotism.

💬1. is the pro-trump pro-zionist a man or woman? I rotated here and didn't experience that lolol

💬1. is the pro-trump pro-zionist a man or woman? I rotated here and didn't experience that lolol > woman, incoming president of AAD lol

how many derm spots went through SOAP last year? Is there a way to check? Also is it true that Miami had to go through a SOAP spot?

#19692019-2020 DermMar 23

IU had to soap all 4 spots i think << IU is Indiana University?

Mar 23

yes

Mar 23

< how do you know? Is there a list of SOAP spots?

Mar 23

i saw it on the 2018-2019 spreadsheet around match time

Mar 23

Anyone know what happened with the IU program? I heard it may have been an ERAS submission error since they are otherwise regarded as a good program. Has any derm program ever had to SOAP all spots?

Mar 23
0

So I still have a chance to match into derm?

Mar 23
0

meh weird if it was a error cause I heard they matched like 1 of the spots and others were SOAP

Mar 23

ooooh i didnt know they matched 1 << didn't they match someone from Harvard? Was that through SOAP?

Mar 23

yes i think so

Mar 23

wow a Harvard med student didn't match? << I heard a couple of harvard people didnt match derm... << HOW DID THEY LIKE THEM APPLES

Mar 23
0

LMAO, also its amazing they let him/her come back

Mar 23

wait you're saying the Harvard student that matched at IU got a DUI?

Mar 23

didn't UMASS or UCONN match all IMGs, was that through SOAP or intentional? << I heard from a few reliable sources that UMass intentionally matched 2 IMGs and took 1 resident who was switching from another specialty at UMass. They did not SOAP and from their website it looks like one of the first times ever they didn't take at least 1 of their own students. Not to say non-traditional applicants don't deserve a shot, but there are many fantastic US MD seniors who didn't match last year.

Mar 23

Indiana matched 1 of their 5 spots last year without the SOAP. They have 5 spots every 3rd year (back to 4 this year).

Mar 23
0

so what's wrong with the program? How come they had to SOAP? <I rotated there - there was one mean attending but everything else seemed good - not sure how I’d explain it being the only program that needed to SOAP and having 80% of its spots go unfilled (before the SOAP)

why are the 1/8 and 1/15 interview dates so popular? SO many schools with conflicting dates on those days that i would have LOVED to go to but was forced to choose :( there has to be a better system for this

#18792019-2020 DermMar 23

the system is trickle, gimme dem invites! but seriously i dont know why schools do this, i guess its their way of filtering out even more candidates...<<i guess but then they miss out on some really great applicants that might have gone there. for example, i literally couldnt choose between two schools on those dates, so i just went with the more convenient flight option. Not because i liked one school more than the other....who knows if i would have been a better fit for the other school

Mar 23
0

man i feel for you, im not saying its right or anything.

Mar 23
0

I feel for UConn and Maryland internals/rotators. Only given 1 date << can you imagine if you rotated at both, and then had to pick between invites at JHU, UCSF, Northwestern, UC-Davis, UMiami, Mayo-AZ?<<that was me, i had to pick between ucsf, northwestern, mayo AZ, Davis, and hopkins <goals x3

Mar 23
0

i would love to have those problems

Mar 23
0

I hate the overlap especially since I have had to pick even though I only have 5 invites. However, with people going to 15+ or 20+ interviews, I'm glad they do this to force a little trickle. << problem is for some of us we already got rejected from these programs, so even if the spots are now open...it won't be to us :(

Mar 23
0

As someone with far more rejections than invites, we have to accept that those were not for us.

Anyone know which programs have supplementals? And which recquire different personal statements?

#24652018-2019 DermMar 22

I don't think any programs require different personal statements (at least when I applied). Some people changed their personal statements for programs they were really interested in or to clarify any ties to a geographic region that may not have been evident from the rest of their application. UTSW, Mayo, Indiana, and UMass had supplemental questions that were relatively short.
