Applicant sentiment — from 65 anonymous posts, 2016–2026

4.5 / 10

What anonymous posters said

Anonymous posters frequently reported rejections, sometimes in large batches, alongside a rolling interview process where prelim or interview spots were described as filling quickly. Several posts noted confusion about the supplemental application, including an ambiguous "diversity applicant" prompt, and about away-rotation requirements like mask fitting. Some commenters also discussed interview-day logistics and scheduling.

Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

1 entry

1. Disclaimer I've never visited this program in person, but wanted to shoutout the great vibes and resources they seemed to have on interview day. Specialty clinics galore and exposure to what sounded like state of the art resources and research. Also tons of admin time, I think it was 2 or 2.5 afternoons off each week. Most importantly to me residents seemed super happy and got along great with faculty. Location isn't great compared to Boston or other cities but COL is good for the area. Sounds like they like away rotators though so I'd encourage doing an away there if you're intersted

Not meant to be rude but do Carribean grads apply derm? Seems really tough.

#2872019-2020 DermMar 23

< As someone from a top 5 MD program, I am ALWAYS blown away by the Caribs and osteos graduates in ACGME-accredited programs, especially at the residencies affiliated with my school. They are the superstars who were so great that they overcame the biases of the PDs.

Mar 23

They do. And they sometimes match but almost always after killing it in a research fellowship.

wasnt there a derm program that took a bunch of IMGs recently? in the NE i think > UMass

UMass was reasonable tho with just 100 words. Others less so - mad about BU.

Question for those of you with this invite. Did you fill out the PTSP form online to formally apply to the PTSP, or just apply research track on ERAS?

IU had to soap all 4 spots i think << IU is Indiana University?

#5602019-2020 DermMar 23

yes

Mar 23
0

< how do you know? Is there a list of SOAP spots?

Mar 23
0

i saw it on the 2018-2019 spreadsheet around match time

Mar 23
0

Anyone know what happened with the IU program? I heard it may have been an ERAS submission error since they are otherwise regarded as a good program. Has any derm program ever had to SOAP all spots?

Mar 23
0

So I still have a chance to match into derm?

Mar 23
0

meh weird if it was a error cause I heard they matched like 1 of the spots and others were SOAP

Mar 23
0

ooooh i didnt know they matched 1 << didn't they match someone from Harvard? Was that through SOAP?

Mar 23
0

yes i think so

Mar 23
0

wow a Harvard med student didn't match? << I heard a couple of harvard people didnt match derm... << HOW DID THEY LIKE THEM APPLES

Mar 23
0

wow that's crazy! did they have disciplinary problems?

Mar 23

Mar 23

how was this info even leaked lmao << a resident on one of my aways had just come back from leave.....for a DUI. Their mug shot came up on Google next to their professional headshot.

Mar 23
0

how long a leave do you have to take for a DUI? Not that I'm planning on getting one lol

Mar 23
0

LMAO, also its amazing they let him/her come back

Mar 23
0

wait you're saying the Harvard student that matched at IU got a DUI?

Mar 23
0

didn't UMASS or UCONN match all IMGs, was that through SOAP or intentional? << I heard from a few reliable sources that UMass intentionally matched 2 IMGs and took 1 resident who was switching from another specialty at UMass. They did not SOAP and from their website it looks like one of the first times ever they didn't take at least 1 of their own students. Not to say non-traditional applicants don't deserve a shot, but there are many fantastic US MD seniors who didn't match last year.

Mar 23
0

Indiana matched 1 of their 5 spots last year without the SOAP. They have 5 spots every 3rd year (back to 4 this year).

Mar 23
0

so what's wrong with the program? How come they had to SOAP? <I rotated there - there was one mean attending but everything else seemed good - not sure how I’d explain it being the only program that needed to SOAP and having 80% of its spots go unfilled (before the SOAP)

Anyone know which programs have supplementals? And which recquire different personal statements?

#24652018-2019 DermMar 22

I don't think any programs require different personal statements (at least when I applied). Some people changed their personal statements for programs they were really interested in or to clarify any ties to a geographic region that may not have been evident from the rest of their application. UTSW, Mayo, Indiana, and UMass had supplemental questions that were relatively short.

Mar 22

UTSW wants you to submit answers to 3 questions

For anyone interviewing at UMass, are you guys staying in Boston or staying in worcester?

#10912018-2019 DermMar 22

Any specific details on derm at Brown? Are people happy? How would the training compare to programs like Minnesota, UNC, Duke, UMass, etc?

#10192018-2019 DermMar 22
0

Found out that UMass fired one of their residents who was originally in their current PGY3 class after PGY2 year. The spot was then quickly filled by a resident from another program who transferred in. Does anyone have any info/insight about this? Not trying to stir the pot, but just not sure what to make of it. :/

Which programs require different or supplemental personal statments?
