Does anyone know if the Tufts away opened yesterday (4/2)? I did not see it on 4/1. I thought it was going to open for submission on 4/3 and am now wondering if I missed it
I saw it open on 4/2! But was not announced or anything
Boston, MA
Sentiment score: 5.2 / 10
Applicants discuss Tufts as a competitive program with mixed experiences, noting interview invitations, scheduling logistics, and comparisons to other Boston-area programs. Significant discussion centers on an unfilled SOAP spot potentially reserved for Saudi Arabian nationals, leadership changes including a new chair search, and concerns about program culture. Some applicants express positive impressions of the interview process, while others make harsh criticisms.
✅1. Highly recommend rotating at/applying to this program for future applicants! The rotation exposes you to many subspecialty clinics and you get tons of practice presenting and working directly with the attendings (most days sitting side by side with them all day in the charting room). Would describe the culture as extremely healthy, residents and attendings were smart, chill, and overall fun to be around. No huge egos, just good vibes and good learning
✅2. Second this ^
❌1. Did an away here and one of the APDs is just incredibly inappropriate and unkind to patients behind their backs. Very weird vibes overall.

ignore the benefits of an academic career, whats the pro of going to a t10 derm?
probably nothing
honestly probably not much beyond geographical boost if you'd like to stay locally as a private derm
layman prestige + MAYBE better training
Better training for esoteric
If you go to Harvard over say BU or Tufts, would your training be better / would your life be that different? > I hear harvard has more inpatient maybe that may be different. HA. In all seriousness, no. As an adult, the largest impact on your education is YOU. A program may be better or worse for your priorities, but in all honesty, it likely will not make a measurable difference. If your priority is prestige and academics, Harvard may be better. However, there is no objective answer here. I know people wish there were given how many times this is asked. Put your personal priorities first. There are as many different careers as there are dermatologists.

thoughts on the Tufts interview??? personally thought it was more tough than what the residents made it out to be like
i thought the questions were all super standard, and the faculty were nice > kinda some tough questions tbh
agree some of the questions were tough! everyone was so friendly but may have been my hardest interview yet
tougher than expected and more rapidfire questioning but friendly
didn't have time to ask any questions, faculty just asked more questions, definitely toughest interview

Why does every derm program have some kind of exploitation? Like UCSF forcing residents to cover attending inboxes for patients they'e never seen before?
y'all need to remember that this is NOTHING!!!!!!! compared to a residency in IM/surgery/peds/etc. yes it sucks but it's so so so so much better than what you could be dealing with. This is also another plug for everyone to do a chill TY instead of a prelim lol < what an odd response
Not every program exploits, but yes some definitley do
…what was odd about that response
that theyre putting down other specialties as if theyre malignant> because they are lol
yikes if you guys think derm is any different… the joke is that specialties are all malignant in some capacity and it depends on the program. Derm isn't special and you aren't above other specialties because you matched Derm. respect other specialites guys what is wrong with that....
Being forced to do stupid shit like cover atttending inbox can actually make a big impact on your QoL .. lol
which programs do this?
CCF, UMich, OHSU
tufts too
At CCF, you only cover the attending in boxes of patients that you have seen so it was just part of the continuing care of your patients just like in the real world
without the attending salary yay
Umich does not cover attending inboxes (you cover your own inbox for patients you staffed with an attending, and if they see patients independently, they cover the inbox stuff)

What MD programs do out of match offers?
Applied last year with a similar question... none that I know of personally out of all the MD programs. Its a match violation. Not even the "niche" programs like the two in Puerto Rico match outside the match (however they take 99% from PR with the exception of one student from Tufts last year). The one DO program that matches outside the match pretty consistently is St. John's Episcopal (3 residents per year). I wouldn't be surprised if other programs with 1 resident per year didn't already know who they were going to take prior to the cycle though, effectively providing an "outside the match hunch" to the applicant.
I remember there was someone at Sinai who was offered an out of match offer in February (this was back in 2022 i believe) and did not take it at insistence of Sinai's home department. I'm not sure if this story is true or not. I would imagine though that if a program did give someone an out of match offer, and the program would then withdraw from the match for that year. That would not make it a match violation, right?
yep!
Of note Tulane does offer a research fellowship every 2 years starting after completion of an ACGME recognized TY/internship in Medicine or Surgery. It is reserved for 1 individual under Dr. Boh (the chair of the department). When you sign up it is with the understanding you are guaranteed into their program after two years of grinding papers. It's pretty competetive to land. Their fellow just matched to Tulane Derm this past cycle. https://medicine.tulane.edu/dermatology/fellowship/clinical-research
