Applicants discuss Georgetown/MedStar Washington Hospital Center's interview timeline and logistics, with notable frustration about delayed or unclear interview release communications despite the program signing up for coordinated release. The program appears competitive with selective interview practices, though applicants appreciate that it interviews away rotators and has both medicine and medicine/dermatology tracks.

med-derm vs derm?

#28932025–2026 DermFeb 21

Are you interested in also being a hospitalist in conjunction to a dermatologist? Do you like the IM residency as much as derm? You don't need med-derm training to specialize in complex med-derm in the future (although certainly wouldn't hurt) but it's the most efficient way to do both hospitalist medicine and derm if that's your jam.

also seems like it can push your career forward quickly. Small but very strong network> true, definitely makes you more marketable

Feb 21

thanks yall! honestly i like IM and inpatient medicine, i'm just concerned about the workload of IM residency. i think in the future i would be interested in being a hospitalist a couple weeks out of the year maybe idk

Can we make a list in the cell to the right of places whose derm interview automatically counts as your interview for a prelim/TY year too?

#28292025–2026 DermFeb 21

Penn State, Northwestern, Yale (kind of), Georgetown, Ohio State, Brown, Cleveland Clinic, UPMC, UTHSC (tennessee), Zucker/Northwell, Emory, Mizzou, WVU, Dartmouth

Feb 21
0

wait I didn't know about Northwestern, are we sure?

Feb 21

northwestern med derm counts for prelim.

Feb 21
0

Penn state does??

Feb 21
0

yes Penn state does, presented to us on interview day

Feb 21
0

what about northwestern regular Derm/peds derm> NW med derm counts for advanced derm NW position + med derm position. NOT prelim. You can ask to be considered for categorical IM, but that was not guaranteed by just applying.

Feb 21

Exact wording: "We are very excited to welcome you to the Northwestern University combined Medicine-Dermatology interviews, which also serves as interviews for either the categorical Medicine and/or advanced Dermatology tracks, if you have applied to either of those Northwestern programs. "

I thought there were so many green flags on my interview for medstar today but I'm reading so many negative things about the program here. How do I square that circle?

#27562025–2026 DermFeb 21

I rotated here, their program is amazing to me on paper but vibes were just a little off / not my fit. the residents are all really nice, but I was also told not to do the combined because it's really tiring and maybe not worth it. the derm clinics were high volume so they were pretty busy, but I didn't see much unique pathology in general derm honestly. I can't speak for children's national though, didn't see that. otherwise it's just a lot of drive time between sites. Also, residents seemed scared of PD but I honestly thought it was fine to work with her, she just made them redo sutures for subtle problems. I honestly liked their interview day too. Some of the faculty are very kind too like their Chair is an angel and has worked a lot on making the culture better than in previous years per residents . I think it would be a good program but some cons

Hey man you like what you like! Don't let others create a narrative for you. You decide what you like and do with it what you will. I'm also taking everything on this sheet with a HUGE grain of salt, I personally know one or two people who intentionally lie about places to be self-serving. < cannot agree with this more. People will intentionally spread false claims

Feb 21
1

but also these "claims" don't come from nothing. a lot of people who are now residents come back and share thoughts on the programs that they held back when they were applicants. it's all just data and it's up to your own discretion how to use it.

Feb 21
0

fame and shame also a lil old

Feb 21

Didn't someone get fired and another kill themselves at medstar?

Feb 21
0

yes that's why I'm confused on how good the vibes were today.

Feb 21

anyone can put on an act for a couple of hours. Don't ignore all of the feedback over the years.

am sure i will get flamed if this is dumb lol but do most derm programs not do second looks anymore? Have not heard anything about it from interviews, etc

#23602025–2026 DermFeb 21

I think a lot of them aren't anymore. I know MedStar and Duke aren't doing them. UConn does not either. Northwestern is also not hosting one.

Does anyone know anything about medstar med derm? I heard one of their residents died by suicide? What is the culture like there? Is the environment supportive? What's the vibe? I'm a little scared to rank it after finding this out. Also, is it considered a strong program? It was pretty far down doximity's list and I wasn't sure how to interpret that.

#20052025–2026 DermFeb 21

read what you just wrote and maybe that will help you -> I was really hoping to hear someone's perspective who rotated there or goes to school there. I'm trying hard to keep an open mind, especially since I don't have a crazy number of interviews.

Feb 21

I go to school there. It's a toxic environment and people are not happy. But dc is nice, other than that, don't really recommend.
