✅1. Highly recommend rotating at/applying to this program for future applicants! The rotation exposes you to many subspecialty clinics and you get tons of practice presenting and working directly with the attendings (most days sitting side by side with them all day in the charting room). Would describe the culture as extremely healthy, residents and attendings were smart, chill, and overall fun to be around. No huge egos, just good vibes and good learning

I think Tufts spot is for Saudi Arabian track, not regular track so we cant apply << Yes Tufts is amazing place, off course they were going to fill all their spots. People talking bs about the program is not true. << I actually do wonder if the open spot is for their Saudi funded spot. Multiple people have confirmed that they have some spots paid for by them, but it seems like an odd way for them to fill it via SOAP

CMS funding is not easy to get! many institutions self-fund spots once they get approved to have more residents bc CMS funding is very behind

Yeah I think Mt. Sinai has a couple of these spots? As a rotator, I found our that they only had funding for a certain number of spots and considered taking an extra resident in the past through these sponsored spots. They didn't end up taking one last year or this year now based on the results so maybe they are moving away from it? Not sure on that part though... <-- I believe that spot has always historically been taken by an SA applicant

it was an insanely low number of interviews... do 1:5 if you are so confident (which a lot of the ivy leagues do), not 1:3. that's literally idiotic << Not even the top 5 could get away with a 1:3 ratio... Agreed 1:5 is the lowest even the best programs should drop to
St. Lukes Interviewed 120 people for 2 spots, It was impossible for them not to match

How did Harvard, Stanford, Penn, NYU, and UCSF come to be the definitive top 5 programs? It seems like no one can agree on anything, except that these are the top 5. Makes me wonder how this was determined and why places like Yale/UTSW/Michigan/Mayo/etc aren't considered top 5?
<- i feel like a lot is based on history no? I know at NYU they trained some of the trailblazers in derm (like way way back) and it was also big during the AIDS epidemic -- That's good to know. Tbh, I actually don't know much of anything about derm history, and wasn't aware. So do you think they got their reputation mostly based on years of continuous contributions to the field?
NYU is the top creme de la creme program.
i would cream myself to match any of the top 5 x2 <My mentors have mentioned slightly different lists to me that they consider the top programs (though 3-4 of those always make the list), so it is all subjective. <<< Thanks for the input, good to know that they may not be as static as they seem

<< Can someone explain to me why a US MD residency would have a spot dedicated to Saudi nationals? I am quite confused by this. ---It's pretty simple, a program is only funded for X residents, so Saudi Arabia says "Hey, we will pay you $###,### per year to be able to afford an additional resident (salary, health care, benefits), but it has to go to someone that we choose". So then a program will offer X spots in the match with one to be filled and paid for by Saudi Arabi or whoever else. So it's not that Saudi Arabi is taking a spot away from an American and converting it to Saudi Arabi, it's more like Saudi Arabi paid to create an additional spot that wouldn't have been there without the funding. Not sure if this is exactly what happens with Tufts, but likely when somewhere foreign funds a spot. <this used to be the case, but that spot is no longer funded by SA, just an open SOAP spot this year
does any other field do this whole thing with another country funding a residency spot? I guess I wonder what is the limiting factor for determine a derm residency and if it's reached per ACGME, then doesn't that additional resident eat into those resources? Like for surgery, it comes down to number of case logs required to graduate.
many programs might be approved by ACGME to have X +Y spots. However, only have funding from congress for X spots. Therefore, if they could find funding, they would have room for Y more spots.
but there must be some limit. Again, once a surgery program can demonstrate they have enough case volume to support another resident, they usually get approved for it so it doesn't seem like it's just a funding issue
