Maybe everyone liked it because they favor personality over prestige and that is reflected in their culture and current faculty/residents.

Midwest programs usualy end up with people with midwest ties. Even top-tier programs have problems with recruiting west coast/east coast candidates

I'm just surprised because there was huge discussion on what a great program it was, and about receiving phone calls from this place. I think it's because people from top-tier schools don't like to come to the Midwest, or maybe it's weather, or maybe top-tier applicants, stick with prestige/name type places

I like how you assume that MN ranked all of the "prestigious" applicants from big name East/West coast schools at the top and ended up with "lower tier" applicants because they lost their top picks to better programs. Have you considered that perhaps MN values personal accomplishment and how well a person fits within their program over medical school prestige? I doubt they get very far down their rank list, as you seem to be suggesting

It's not ok to stereotype non top-tier students but it's ok to stereotype top-tier students? If one says 'just because someone attended a x name top 10 school doesn't mean she or he is a gunner' the response is 'stereotypes exist for a reason, and there is often truth'. There is so much defensiveness and inconsistency in the arguments here. We should just all keep an open-mind about candidates, regardless of their stats or background.

It's not a stereotype when residents at a top-tier derm institution act a certain prototypical way.

Have you seen Joyce Park's blog on getting into Derm? Typical out-of-touch top-tier Derm resident.

NYC has a lot of great programs (NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Sinai), but Chicago really only has NW. There are much better programs in the Midwest compared to the other Chicago programs

Yeah, there are so much better Derm programs in the Midwest than in Chicago, i.e. Wash U, Indiana, etc.

and Minnesota, Mayo

But Chicago programs have Chicago itself going for them; rest of the midwest is meh

I have lived in both, and personally would take Minneapolis/St. Paul over Chicago any day. what does Chicago have that MSP doesn't, besides a giant metal bean?

MN lakes > lake michigan, the food is slightly better in Chicago (I'll give you that) but MN still has great restaurants. plus it is so much cleaner, less corrupt, has less traffic/crime, and better outdoor activities and bike trails

I'll echo that besides Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul is great, but so too is Madison. For university towns, Ann Arbor and Iowa City are nice (at least for three years). Not going to lie, Celeveland and St Louis are terrible

Agreed. Case and Cleveland Clinic were both excellent programs. Completely shitty as cities and terrible weather.
