Baltimore, MD
Sentiment score: 6.8 / 10
Johns Hopkins is viewed as a prestigious, top-tier dermatology program with strong clinical training and faculty, though applicants express concerns about Baltimore's safety reputation, limited procedural/Mohs training, and perceived preference for internal candidates and rotators. Interview logistics issues (limited dates, scheduling conflicts) and reports of internal candidates preferring to match elsewhere are frequently discussed.
❌1. Honestly so hit or miss with the faculty. Some are incredibly kind and some are so bizarre. During the interview, one of the Mohs surgeons just went on bizarre tangents, asked random unrelated questions, and I heard she did this to others too (someone said she made them sing on the spot during the interview??). One of the other interviewers just straight up NRMP violationed and asked me explicitly where I did my aways, if I was considering my hometown/undergrad institution for residency and if I applied there, which was super awkward to navigate. PD seems nice but also a little awkward. Tons of faculty turnover the last few years.
❌2. Program is in a rebuild phase, having lost many faculty and mostly newer faculty.
💬1. Makes sense that chasing prestige means you have socially inept or egotistic folks, who can get away with poor behavior because of entitlement and name brand. It's our job to avoid paying it forward and chase out toxicity+1 > Lol Hopkins as a derm dpt doesnt live up to its undergrad/med school rep. They've also lost some of their top tier faculty and are sorta in a rebuild phase. Anyone chasing Hopkins for the undergrad rep is kinda hilarious

what makes some schools better at matching people into derm? seeing schools vanderbilt mentioned for matching small #s and schools like colorado who matched 7 this year, what makes a school/their students more successful in the match?
people from Vanderbilt might assume they have a better chance bc their school is "better" or "higher in rankings" so may not try as hard on rotations or with creating connections. Personal opinion
Harvard matched 14, Hopkins 10 and Penn 10 -- I'm kinda seeing a pattern there lol
vanderbilt only had 1 person apply derm this year
14 is crazy
last year penn had almost 10 unmatched tho
UIC matched 7 which is impressive for mid tier
Harvard didn't match 14, matched 11.
vanderbilt only had 1 person apply derm this year << I imagine one of the reasons Colorado's med students had an easier time getting into Derm as because of the dermatoepidemiology research of Dr. Dellavalle where he cranks out publications like crazy.
The best schools match the best, maybe its school name maybe its cuz those ppl are cracked. I've heard my PD say that the top programs care more about med school rank
he left CO a few years ago so idk how many current applicants even worked with him
Harvard matched 11, some students went unmatched

there was that one Harvard student on here who had 0 interviews because Harvard doesn't even interview all their internal applicants
that student had 0 IIs for a reason though
what was the reason???
Wait...what happened at UTMB they only took 1 home student despite increasing in size 2 spots? Did they not have many internals this year?
a lot of places didn't take home this year it seems? Hopkins also only took 1, but I guess everyone else matched because they're hopkins..
but this is misleading because we don't know how each applicant ranked their home program. I ranked mine like #3 and ended up matching at #1 so
a lot of hopkins internal candidates were not planning on staying there
a lot of hopkins internal candidates were not planning on staying there> Hi, I'm an internal from UTMB ive been more of a lurker but sadly I did not match derm. Not sure what happened this year but only 1 applicant from UTMB ended up matching derm and they matched at home. Honestly it was shocking as most years they match at least 4-5 applicants
Can confirm most Hopkins students did not want to stay lol. Hopkins will usually take a good number of internals
Most/all hopkins students ranked other programs more highly and hence matched there instead of their home.> why is that?? is it not a good program??
people are tired and want something new, true for most programs
a lot of people also don't love living in baltimore unless they have ties to the area.
Whoever deleted what was posted here go to hell!!

how is baltimore for u jhu ppl why is everyone ranking jhu so low
bc Baltimore is ass. Booty cheeks. But I actually didn't apply to Hopkins for that reason
sigh :( i wish it wasn't so dangerous
a lot of internal applicants but they want to leave hopkins lmfao
seems like most residents are from maryland med schools tho...>as an internal applicant Hopkins is towards the bottom of my list. the past 4 years in Baltimore have been pretty mid, and there's been a ton of turnover in the derm department faculty-wise. Mentorship is kind of lacking and with people leaving I've heard from residents that there are some gaps in training they feel they don't get here. Definitely still some good eggs, and if you're willing to tolerate Baltimore for 3 years it wouldn't be the worst place to train, but if you have better options I would take them…
Baltimore isn't terrible but there are much nicer cities to train in and live in lol
New interview tea thread- drop your unhinged interview questions yall have gotten!-> nothing crazy but seing the stone cold eyes of residents is haunting
I heard someone was asked to sing on the spot at the Hopkins interview
so many people keep saying Harvard is suboptimal training because more inpatient time and more call... do we have facts/stats on this? what are the inpatient consult time and call responsibilities, objectively speaking?
Yes the Harvard program probably has more inpatient time compared to other programs, but it amounts to 16 weeks (4 months) of inpatient consult time and call across MGH, Brigham, BI. People are just exaggerating the inpatient time, likely to dissuade others from ranking highly/#1
they have up to 6 months more inpatient time than similarly ranked programs
they do not scribe or cover attending inbox! program really tries to minimize admin (also no prior auths). inpatient and call can be tough, but residents seem happy with the balance because many blocks have great hours and alternate with inpatient. I believe it is 12 weeks of call?
according to Harvard's recruitment handbook, there is 6 to 8 months of inpatient and 12 weeks of call (not including 2 months at boston children's which is both inpt/outpt)
how does this compare with Penn (since everyone is always putting these two up against each other for #1 rank)?
lol anyone else w/ Harvard interview who literally isn't even a top applicant (no Penn/Stanford/Hopkins/UCSF) it feels so weird
By comparison, UCSF has 2 months of inpatient (one in PGY2, one in PGY3)

Why does a city like Baltimore get so much hate but not Rochester, MN? There’s absolutely nothing in Rochester, it’s cold and in the middle of nowhere
You are more likely to die in Baltimore than Rochester? Baltimore is butt cheeks so I'd prefer Rochester (I'm for SoCal too)
Rochester is great for raising a family, good Suburbs, cute downtown, safe, and mayo is a literal gorgeous Cush hospital all connected by skyways and subways so you don't have to walk in the cold to get around most times (they didn't interview me but 100/100 times I'd pick roch and mayo over Baltimore/hopkins no comparison)
wait how likely to die and where like i feel like i'm a poor judge of the safety of baltimore. it's near the bottom of my RL right now antyway
you're not going to die in baltimore it's not that bad, but robberies happen and you need to be vigilant walking around
some of you guys never lived in a city and it shows lmfao. all cities have safe and not safe part of the city. same for baltimore
The level of unsafeness in Baltimore is wildly exaggerated by people who have never lived there. The best thing about Rochester is that Minneapolis is 2hrs away.
I spent a summer in Rochester and its a very small, tight knit city. not much to do but it feels pretty safe

Thoughts on maryland interview today?
some were nice
i think they didn't like me lmao
what made you feel that? Just the interviewers' vibes?
hey you dont know, maybe they really like you still
i really liked them!
i heard the MD PD or chair changed recently to someone from hopkins, and so the vibes may be off, did yall feel that way?
i believe its the chair, i thought he had an interesting background no weird vibes imo
hes a g

Folks who wrote in IV impressions about Hopkins interview, saying they would rank Hopkins lower after IV day, why?
also saying you are ranking it lower after the interview BECAUSE of location is misleading af. Yall knew where it was before the interview???
didn't really process until going in person lol + 1
there's a difference between knowing where it is and actually seeing/thinking about living in Baltimore, as someone who had never been before
as someone who grew up poor in a rough location it didn't seem bad? but maybe my perspective is skewed.. i also felt like south LA reminded me of where i grew up so that's that..
location
Baltimore is so tough lmao >yea baltimore is a crappy place to live but jelly yall got an interview there haha
I’m not here for the Baltimore hate :(
Baltimore is so dog but I'd gratefully accept any chance to be at Hopkins :/
what’s so bad about Baltimore?
It's a drug infested, crime ridden shit hole
so why did yall apply…
Becuase I would rather be at JHU than be unmatched. The name of JHU is enough of a reason to live in squalor for 3 years with plans to never return
walk outside and not get shot (impossible challenge)
location near the hopkins sucks, but near the water is okay
i just didnt love the attendings
there's something off about most of the attendings and the dynamic was a bit odd. even one of the attendings who was super nice and smiley..idk if they were stressed about the interview day or what I was picking up on.
say more
they lost one of their mohs attending to UVA. She was so nice
i felt the same way! like something felt so off!! I was confused. I thought the APDs were super nice, but everyone else seemed super passive/bored/didn't want to be there?

for people who are going to yale interviews, which airports are you flying into/how are you getting to new haven?
not sure this is best, but EWR + train
EWR then renting a car
are you all flying out the same day the interview's over?
worst part about living in new haven is the lack of airport access tbh
yeah i didn't realize this until now actually
as someone in CT, BDL in hartford is ok, smaller airport, soo slightly more expensive JFK is 1.5-2hrs from new haven, BOS 2-3 hrs. there is also a small new haven airport staffed by Avelo airlines
it was soo miserable as a broke college student with no car. HVN tickets are crazy expensive and you always need to connect through Philly. BDL tix are also pricey, and the only way to get there is by driving. LGA/JFK/EWR are 2hr+ commutes by train and public transportation.
coming from the west coast there are also no direct/great flights from where I am to BDL, ends up taking the same time to fly into EWR/JFK and drive/uber
I'm jealous y'all got Yale but am not sad about not living in new haven lol. basically like the hopkins discourse above

for thank you emails for derm since there are 20-25 interviwers are you just sending it to the program director?
all of my programs so far have said no TY notes/post interview communication, so would double check! but if they don't say anything dissuading, I think PD is fine> thank you so much!!!- for hopkins they did not specify so I was not sure
POOP
What's the dress code for the Hopkins pre-interview social?
smart casual (sweaters, polos, blouses, etc.) no suits/pantsuits
I wont be able to go, flight comes in later, sigh :'(
that's fine! it's just residents there so very low key, and during the interview you will have breaks and the breakroom will also have residents for you to ask questions
Ty!!
POOP (BUT IN PURPLE)

Is anyone else not able to make the hopkins social tmrw too?
you'll be fine, when programs say these things dont impact your ranking, it's generally true (for once)

Has anyone interviewing at Hopkins gotten any info for the upcoming interview?
the itenary is published on thalamus

I don't think I see it for me?
