What is a dermatology PGY-1 position - is that categorical derm where the institution also offers an automatic intern year place?

#542015-2016 DermMar 23

yes

Mar 23
0

There's only a few of those

Mar 23
0

The unfilled "PGY-1" is actually a physician ONLY spot - that's how NRMP files it

Mar 23
0

So Mayo Clinic didn't fill its spots?

Mar 23
0

where did you get that idea

Mar 23
0

It's my wild guess, I thought it was the only residency program offering a 1 track.

Mar 23
0

Cleveland Clinic also has that

Mar 23

Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville?

Mar 23
0

Mayo Jacksonville is all categorical. Mayo Rochester has categorical spots and advanced positions

Mar 23
0

17 spots PGY-1 South and 1 is unfilled? Other than Mayo Clinic Jacksonville what other program is a categorical in the south?

Mar 23
0

Memphis is categorical right?

Mar 23
0

I think so. What other programs are categorical in south - that's not 17

Mar 23
0

I can't think of any others and I interviewed at a good chunk of the southern programs

Mar 23
0

There are no categoricals in the soap. There are 6 A and 1 R

Mar 23
0

That's not what it shows on the list though? It shows 10 unfilled Derm PGY-2 and 1 unfilled PGY-1

Mar 23
0

not all unfilled programs choose to participate in SOAP

Mar 23
0

I don't know if any Derm program will actually do SOAP. They will take their sweet old time, and go beyond the end of the week. Trust me.

thoughts on the chicago programs? other than NW obv

#132015-2016 DermMar 23

not great

Mar 23
0

NYC has a lot of great programs (NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Sinai), but Chicago really only has NW. There are much better programs in the Midwest compared to the other Chicago programs

Mar 23
0

Yeah, there are so much better Derm programs in the Midwest than in Chicago, i.e. Wash U, Indiana, etc.

Mar 23
0

and Minnesota, Mayo

Mar 23
0

But Chicago programs have Chicago itself going for them; rest of the midwest is meh

Mar 23
0

Is Chicago that great of a city (I've never been)?

Mar 23
0

I have lived in both, and personally would take Minneapolis/St. Paul over Chicago any day. what does Chicago have that MSP doesn't, besides a giant metal bean?

Mar 23
0

lake michicagn, amazing restaurants, mediocore chicks, shootings

Mar 23
0

MN lakes > lake michigan, the food is slightly better in Chicago (I'll give you that) but MN still has great restaurants. plus it is so much cleaner, less corrupt, has less traffic/crime, and better outdoor activities and bike trails

Mar 23
0

I'll echo that besides Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul is great, but so too is Madison. For university towns, Ann Arbor and Iowa City are nice (at least for three years). Not going to lie, Celeveland and St Louis are terrible

Mar 23
0

Agreed. Case and Cleveland Clinic were both excellent programs. Completely shitty as cities and terrible weather.
