What anonymous posters said

Several posts describe confusion distinguishing the University Hospitals/Case Western and MetroHealth/Case Western programs, along with recurring questions about interview invites, scheduling, and a screening questionnaire. Multiple commenters suggested the program tends to match many of its own students internally, and a few described mixed impressions of the interview experience.

What schools only take research fellows? I've heard Mount Sinai and Mayo Arizona but are there others? Same with away rotators only (basically which programs to avoid signalling unless you rotated at)

#4752026-2027 DermAug 14

I think most small programs 2 or fewer reisdents/class tend to take primarily away rotators/fellows not just Mayo AZ, however mayo AZ especially isnt worth it unless you did a research fellowship with them. Sinai also as you said, but they are a big program just with tons of fellows that are essentially guaranteed a spot. UCLA also past years has also taken primarily research fellows. Programs that heavily favor away rotators tend to be NYC programs, especially cornell. Texas programs tend to primarily recruit from texas schools or away rotators with texas connections. USF primarily takes those with regional connections. CWRU usually takes home students and their own research fellows. Wouldnt even bother with the Larkin programs unless you have no other choice and can pay for a spot. Hopefully this is helpful, will try to add more if I think of any

i think this is all good info but if your mentor has connecs and advocates for u, can still get interview w/o rotating/RY

Texas programs will take Texans that went to medical school outside of the state (got interviews at every Texas school I applied to and did medical school in another state - am Texan)

I have a rotation at Case Western - UH in February. Anyone interested in switching for an earlier date?

what is the best program for mohs?

#1012026-2027 DermApr 8

Ideally a program with a home Mohs program in addition to a track record of Mohs matches (ideally multiple per year). Obv this depends on the residency class and who wants to do Mohs, but if a program has not had a Mohs match for like 3+ years that would be a red flag to me

Also a program with really strong procedural derm access is important. Usually these include places with a county hospital and VA, in addition to community hospitals + university hospitals for surg training

Which programs are known rotation mills?

Even more important than rotation mills are programs that only take their own research fellows. While rotation mills will still interview and match a percentage of their rotators (with variability between programs), programs that only take their research fellows will rotate and interview many of their rotators, but ultimately offer little to no chance of matching for those outside their fellows.

Rotating, signaling, and interviewing at these programs is a waste of time and is performative; they already know who they plan to take for the upcoming cycle

very true. Do NOT waste your time at Mayo AZ or Sinai. UConn also (at least this year). CWRU as well is a major rotation mill people need to talk more about

How do you know they do this

Apr 7

i mean i assume some arent thoroughly looked at my PDs or chairs. SOme are most likely first come first serve but also increase your chance for an interview.

Apr 7

CWRU is first come first serve, and the PC picks them all

Apr 7

Just to rant— I find it so odd that some of these schools use a program coordinator to pick away rotators and then those are the applicants that get interviews meanwhile others are at a disadvantage.

anyone have thoughts/insight about cleveland clinic?

#27532025–2026 DermFeb 21

yes! I'm a "home" student and former rotator - super formal vibes at Cleveland Clinic. Residents felt that the new PD was a drastic change from the old one who was a gem and well loved. Residents were looking forward to leaving because they felt the chill vibes have gone away and new admin are more stricter about things including attending conferences, scoring on derm exams, more scut work etc. Will probably be ranking the other programs in Cleveland higher just because the residents seemed unhappy with the changes to the program. Residents needed to manage the attending inbox which they said was a huge negative. Plus even tho there are in-house fellowships, there is no preference given for in-house residents for Mohs... Feels like there's more negatives here + it felt like the residents didn't have a voice

why are you putting quotes around "home"? Isn't case western a home program?

Feb 21

technically but not officially, CCF has their own med students at CCLCM

Feb 21

Ah, so case western is "home" that's why there's quotes I see >haha yeah its confusing for ppl not familiar with the cleveland med programs

UH>CCF>Metro

Feb 21

I thought the residents were happier at Metro over CCF, I think research/ranking wise CCF defintely wins over Metro but for vibes and well-being I think Metro is better! personally doing UH>Metro>CCF>Metros just tough because its work distributed amongst 2-3 residents vs UH is 6 residents.
