Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

2 entries

1. Super sweet residents, they try really hard to make you feel welcome, the course coordinator and director are extremely responsive and invested in your experience, and they all write nice comments about you! Mostly working with residents and a few dedicated days with an attending 1:1 in clinic. Attendings you work with are also super kind.

1. Parking sucks; expensive at main hospital and even then, have to drive around to find a spot for a while.

Could someone who got an invite add details to the Interviews tab for Cornell/Columbia? Thanks :)

#3432017-2018 DermMar 23

I asked if any of the Cornell, Michigan, or Columbia invites were personalized emails.

Mar 23
0

Michigan was ERAS, not personalized. It was followed up with an Interview Broker email for scheduling.

Is Henry Ford malignant?

#3022017-2018 DermMar 23

Thats a random question. why do you ask?

Mar 23
0

Michigan and Henry Ford both offered to interview me, but I heard both are malignant. Thoughts?

Mar 23
0

Heard that Michigan is a great program but is malignant, but haven't been there myself. Don't know about Henry Ford.

Mar 23
0

Also interested in impressions of Michigan's program if anyone knows about it! Thanks in advance.| HF is not malignant. Very supportive of residents.| What about Michigan?

Mar 23
0

-- Ford is not malignant. Amazing faculty and the residents are wonderful teachers and humans. Very strong program in all sub-specialties of dermatology.

Mar 23
0

Henry Ford has a lot of issues with unhappy residents, and Detroit is a terrible city.

Mar 23
0

What makes you say that (first part about the unhappy residents)? I interviewed there and didn't see anything to suggest they were unhappy.

Mar 23
0

x2 on the unhappy residents. A lot of the attendings had strange personalities.

Thoughts on Michigan's reputation of long hours and "unhappiness" in residents?

#1852017-2018 DermMar 23

I think the long hours are inherent to the University of Michigan program, in general. You can see the "Interview Impressions" in previous years' spreadsheets for more info. It's a very highly academic program, so it isn't likely going to change. They have talked about changing other aspects of the program like its very low exposure to cosmetic derm. Unhappiness in a program has different reasons but I think it's important to correlate that to what you want in a program.

Mar 23
0

Oh come on its only 3 years, miserable or not you come out well trained.

Mar 23
0

Well, there are other top 10 programs that are not as malignant as Michigan... you dont have to be miserable to be well trained... even UCSF had issues a little while ago but they got a new PD and things are improving for residents.

Mar 23
0

Well, Michigan got a new PD too a year ago I think and things have aparently not improved much.

Mar 23

i did away rotation at michigan and will not be ranking the program favorably based on my time spent there. my recomendation is to just try to talk to the residents in private nduring the pre-interview dinner. you will catch a whiff of what is going on.

Mar 23
0

I also rotated at Michigan. The residents are NOT happy. They do all the scut work (call backs, preauthorizations, etc). The attendings are very passive aggressive and at times condescending. It's an awful environment for training. They didn't match all their spots last year. I'm not surprised.

Mar 23
0

I also rotated and did not observe this at all. The residents were pretty happy with their hours.

Mar 23
0

So many red flags. Detached attendings. Unresponsive PD. Unmatched spot. Check the old sheets. Nothing's changed - residents are still miserable and it shows. You've been warned.

Mar 23
0

<--- LOL at this guy trying to match at Michigan. I rotated there and almost all attendings were very friendly.

PSA regarding U Michigan since it was deleted from chitchart archives and is being supressed: https://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/malignancy-at-michigan-dermatology.1296049/

#602017-2018 DermMar 23

Wow. Look at the attached ACGME survey. Resident satisfaction: 17% very negative, 17% negative, 35% neutral, 26% positive, 4% very positive.

Mar 23
0

Okay, this is completely fucked up also because this means the residents lied to my face. I got weird vibes from them anyways, but they flat out said things were improving and that they were "very happy" with their training. This anonymous survey says exactly the opposite-- they are generally "neutral" or unhappy .... and the scores overall have been downtrending in the last 3 years.... this is the biggest red flag there could be. Fuck them.

Mar 23
0

I don't think you can expect residents to flat out rip their program on interview day, it really serves no purpose to the program and will probably get the resident in trouble. Just serves to take the interview day with a huge grain of salt because it's one day and residents are usually on their best behavior.

Mar 23
0

<-- I was considering ranking Michigan highly, but this is making me second guess the impression I got on interview day.

Mar 23
0

Great, Michigan 30% of residents positive or above positive and fewer than 50% feel they can raise concerns without fear. Yet when I flat out asked multiple residents at the pre-interview dinner they made it seem like everything was hunkey-dorey.

Mar 23
0

So... I talked candidly with one of the residents in private, and he/she told me that the same problems were still ongoing. https://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/malignancy-at-michigan-dermatology.1296049/ Are ACGME survey results for all programs open to the public, or each available only for residents/faculty within a program?

Mar 23
0

yeah why cant we see these results for every program? would really help us make decisions....

This has been deleted several times, can you guys please stop spreading false info? I rotated at Michigan, and the residents were very happy there. I am not sure these survey results are authentic.

Mar 23

Michigan internal here, just wanted to add my 2 cents. This is a really wonderful program and I don't know what to make of the results above. From what I have seen, the residents are happy to be here and have a pretty healthy work-life balance.

Mar 23
0

Sorry but many of us feel differnetly as shown by the survey results. im not happy to be here. those who speak out or suggest improvements for the program experience retaliation.

Has anyone gotten an RTM call/ email from Northwestern or Michigan?

#542017-2018 DermMar 23

Michigan explicitly said they are not doing "ranked highly" calls/emails this year.

Mar 23
0

I got a call

Mar 23
0

No you didn't

Mar 23
0

Hm, how are you sure whether they have or have not made calls?

Mar 23
0

Well they didn't even say which place they got a call from.

Mar 23

Does anyone know if Michigan has sent out RTM notices?

#482017-2018 DermMar 23

Again, Michigan PD specifically told us on interview day that there would be no "ranked highly" calls or emails this year.

Second the archive request. Most of this stuff, especially the Michigan crap, has been here for a long time.

#432017-2018 DermMar 23

again, chill about the archiving. You keep repeating yourself pretending to be two people.

Mar 23

They could just be resolving anonymous comments. The majority of the stuff I post (as seen on version history) is just pasting what other people put in comments.

Mar 23

| To the person claiming it's the same poster, how would you know? God, there seem to so many rude people applying this year.

Mar 23

We're only at line 26. No need to archive now. Chill.

On the Michigan website, they say the interview is 12/16-12/17 - does that probably mean dinner on 12/16 and the actual interview day on 12/17?
