are people ranking harbor ucla? i kinda don't wanna rank them but i wonder if i'll regret it < for these questions, you're literally deciding if you'd rather train at X program or not match, it's a pretty simple you just have to decide

What program is at the bottom of your list? < Case Western is dead last #14 for me < Cook County is my last <UAMS < BU < UTHSC lol < Einstein < Harbor UCLA < Iowa < Colorado < UNM but lol i have a lot of these programs on my program list 🤡 < what is UTHSC (Tennessee) ?

Is Harbor-UCLA accredited with warning? Their website said they are accredited.

hey guys so i was looking at the mohs match list 2021 below and it looks like no one from ucla matched... < was also wondering this lol, i feel like programs love to advertise their residents going into fellowships but obviously don't mention how many failed to match < it's also surprising how many people matched at different programs after hearing so many places say "we love to take our own" < mohs def do not like taking their own < the match rate hovers just above 50%, so for every program/applicant that matches, there is somebody who didn't match < did anyone apply this year? No one from my home program applied this year, but we have a really good match when they do

I mean it's Derm. I understand not applying to places like Harvard Derm or NYU Derm if you're scrimping or being judicious on ERAS fees, but Harbor-UCLA you apply to, as you want to apply as broadly as you can. < that is how i saw it too but she thought that was a bit too broad LOL < Great exposure and lots of autonomy < Isn't that what all Derm programs say to sell their program? < But it's actually true. LA county is the most diverse in the country. Harbor-UCLA is where people who are underserved and underinsured go for care, especially if they are in the South Bay/ Long Beach area or west of the 405. Lots of SOC. Tons of excisions and biopsies. < Their graduates seem to for the most part go into private practice w/o subspecializing further: https://www.harbor-ucla.org/dermatology/recent-alumni-list/ < A rationale is that after you had an extensive training during residency, you do not need to pursue fellowship < You do if you want to do Mohs or Dermpath < that's complete bullshit. if the program is really that great you don't need a fellowship

ignorant east coaster here but whats the difference between UCLA and Harbor UCLA? // Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is affiliated with UCLA but operates independently from the David Geffen School of Medicine. The County of Los Angeles owns and operates Harbor-UCLA, and most residents and faculty are employees of the county. < Which is better? < Definitely UCLA that is with the UCLA med school. With Harbor-UCLA, it's a "Derm is Derm" program if you match there as well getting to stay in California. < ouch 😂😂😅

USC vs UCLA? < I would go with USC. < agreed, also looks like ucla took mostly home students last year while USC didn't < USC has quite a few home students as derm residents as well. About 1 or 2 a year. Very CA med school heavy (or ties to CA) but that's to be expected. < also agree with USC < UCLA has the brand name but training/research + everything else is better at USC < what did everyone think of usc interview day, no one posted impressions < lots of UCLA faculty end up leaving UCLA and join USC. Most recently, apparently USC recruited an HS expert from UCLA.

So I was talking with some friends who work at ucla (young physicians / scientists) and heard all about the messy internal politics and how its affected even some trainees. is this gonna make it harder to get full support for my future. I don't like drama. < idgaf plz take me ucla < i feel unsure. < is it really that deep? hate is a strong word < maybe not hate. but def tension and affects how they want to help you < i thought the problem was more with the research program and not the regular clinical track? < then why are so many clinical faculty leaving?? < how do you guys know faculty are leaving? < per residents/students that I know at ucla. always the nice ones that leave < separate issue < I think UCLA is just an intense progarm and derm faculty are just naturally going to be a little competitive with each other to move up the tenure ladder. Not shocking the more laid back, nice ones eventually leave and just go into clinical practice in LA. < i think politics does NOT equal healthy competitiveness!

i want to go into mohs + want to settle down and work in SoCal (home) eventually. knowing that, is one better than the other: UPMC vs UCLA? (posted in X vs Y tab too) < I've heard people typically work in the region they do their residency, so I'd recommend UCLA. OTOH, you'll likely want to do Mohs away from that area since some programs don't want to train their competition. < LOL as if there are Mohs jobs in SoCal < Can't enforce non-competes in California--one of the reasons why silicon valley bros make $$

Why are so many people sleeping on the UC SoCal beach programs (UCLA, UCI, UCSD)? Great training + QoL (perfect weather, 5 - 15 mins from the beach) + you can tap into the alumni network for PP right after.
