Wake Forest Baptist Med Ctr-NC

I wasn't expecting to get an interview there, as I have never lived in and have no connection to the South. But I was surprised to hear from any program so early and sadder than I expected to be.

Just curious, are the people who received rejections very competitive applicants (indicating there might have been some review of your application) or do you guys think it was a filter-based rejection (for instance, step 1<240 or third year grades)?

I would consider myself a competitive applicant (Step 1 260, AOA, Good amount of research and extracurriculars; but let's get real everyone is probably a good applicant), but I still think some degree of filtration goes into it. They probably have a system similar to UNC where they divide the country into regions and subsequently filter out people until they get applicants who are "representative" of the whole country to interview

Also rejected, with 245+ step 265+ step 2/AOA, not from the area

DO with 250s step 1 and 240s step 2 NOT rejected.... this is weird| So if we didn't hear either way? Are we waitlisted?

Maybe first screen was Step 1 < 250 :(

I don't think it means anything for those who haven't heard. They did several waves of rejections last year--they probably divide the applications into piles and have only gotten through one. If you haven't heard, it just means they haven't gotten to you yet.

I rotated at Wake and was told that their first filter is by skimming LORs only without looking at scores or grades

I guess my LORs were not as good as I thought lol

Nothing. They sent many waves of both interview offers and rejections last year.

Yes, I got one on the 5th and was really surprised! Not from the area. STEP 1 & 2 250+, AOA.

Wow. So if we got rejected so fast, it means our letters suck? That is somehow more unsettling to me than if it had been a Step/AOA screen...| are you seriously expecting an interview invite from every derm program? you're not special. get over it

Probably statisically the majority of us will be getting 6-11 interviews or so, so it's OK to be rejected a lot

My question was more whether it bodes poorly to be in the first round of rejections. Obviously majority of applicants will be rejected by majority of programs. I am fully aware that I am a thoroughly average applicant.

I doubt that being rejected in first wave means you suck the most....they probably split all the apps into chunks and go through them in groups, and decide which out of each group they want to interview/reject

you guys really need to try and not take every rejection personally. If you apply to every program, even if you get 15 interviews which is absolutely outstanding, you still get >100 rejections. if you take every one personally, you are in for a very long and depressing application cycle. even applicants with the most amazing stats get tons of rejections..... there are SO many things that go into the decision besides stats, different programs value different things and they can only interview so many people. hang in there!

Current derm resident here who's involved in reviewing applications. Believe me, when I say, getting rejected does not mean you have a weak application. Even tippy top applicants will get >50% rejections and most of you will (if you applied to all programs), get > 90% rejections. Programs don't interview many applicants and tend to preference people they know (rotators, home students, etc.) or those who have regional or local connections (especially for non-top programs). If you're Wake Forest, for instance, do you really think that top Harvard applicant who grew up in California is trying to move to Winston-Salem. Would you want to waste one of your say, 25 interview spots on that person (no idea how many they interview).

The people reviewing applications are certainly not taking chances with their limited interview spots, especially when they know people are applying to 100+ programs. Most applicants who are rejected are probably more upset about the concept of rejection and what that means to their anxiety and ego, not really about the program itself.

I wonder how many invites they're sending out per batch..? So 2 dates and 50 interviews.. sounds like they've sent out all the batches they need to send =(

No. Not unless they are known to send multiple waves. In most circumstances, that should be interpreted as a rejection

They are known to send multiple invite waves so would be an exception

Previous applicant: multiple programs definitely sent out invites in waves last year. I cant remember which exactly, but definitely remember seeing invites went out on last year's sheet, panicking, and then feeling enormous relief hearing from programs a couple days or weeks later

Yeah, this is where this sheet causes unnecessary anxiety IMO. Live your life and come here only when you have a specific question that needs answered. Trying to follow my own advice.
