Anyone do an away at georgetown or george washington? How was it? interested to know, both seem very low yield with regards to # of seats < and Howard? it seems like they usually take their own students...< I rotated at GW.. would not recommend. < why?

Sadly did not match derm, but matched into my backup specialty of Pathology at a T5 program on the East Coast. Feelings are all over the place. If I decided later to reapply to derm... is that even an option? Please send encouragement lol < in the same boat, we can do it!!
< Yes. I've seen people do Path then Dermpath and then apply and match into Derm residency. There's one faculty member at Northwestern (very wonderful guy) who had quite a roundabout way in terms of journey of getting there thru Path. Pathology really is a wonderful & gem of a specialty, and since you're at a top 5 Path program, I would connect with Dermpath and the Derm department there early on to stay connected, present things at conferences, and network (do not let Path know they were your backup). Stick with it. < OP, would I have to do a prelim year also?? Or just the three years of derm? < I'm actually not sure. I would think that because you would have completed a board certified residency (AP/CP), you may not have to, but I'm definitely not sure on this. I would ask a faculty member that you're networking with once you get to Path residency. < you would need to do a prelim! < or a transitional year < you would need to do an intern year before derm < why does path need to do an intern year but IM/peds, etc don't? < because pathology does not meet one year intern requirement for Dermatology residency program https://www.acgme.org/globalassets/pfassets/programresources/pgy1requirements.pdf . Prior to appointment, residents must have successfully completed a broad-based clinical year (PGY-1) in an emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, or a transitional year program accredited by the ACGME, AOA, RCPSC, CFPC, or ACGME-I (Advanced Specialty Accreditation). < path needs an intern year cause you don't see any patients first year of path residency... so it makes sense that it would whereas IM/peds doesn't need to redo their intern year

gw has research fellows, georgetown doesnt < did you do an away rotation at either institution??? >> would it be worth doing an away at Georgetown, I cant find much info on it in the spreadsheets. < Georgetown wasn't accepting any away rotators this past year as there were many (~12) home students. Wouldn't recommend an away at Georgetown in general as there are not very many spots (~2, usually 2 this year there were 3) and usually the spots don't go to home students or away rotators.
