Fame & Shame
2025–2026 Derm
3 entries❌1. almost pointless to apply here if you aren't a research fellow or have a strong connection. nepotism is worth more than anything else here
❌2. I was offered an away in June and had to decline it because in their offer email they stated that because of the "number of attendings we would be rotating with" we should not expect letters of recommendation nor ask for them.
💬1. seriously, why would ANYONE waste a signal here if you didnt do a RY with the department? 90-100% of their spots go to their own fellows.

Insert real Mt. Sinai Impression Here
Can someone explain Mount Sinai? I don't understand...are only people from Saudi allowed to be research fellows there?
Someone had some juicy stories on the Sinai PD, plz chime in
Dont want to go through all the interview impressions tab...any funny ones? Sinai
I think you should recheck the number of spots available at each program- i.e I know downstate has 7, Sinai has 10
Someone majorly edited the interview impressions: Just check out Sinai, almost all the negative feedback was taken out
Can someone post Sinai's interview impressions back? All their negative impressions were deleted lol - sketchy
So...no one from Saudi matched at Mount Sinai?
Found NYU match on SDN if the SO wants to fill some of them in: GW, Icahn, Maryland, Miami, Montefiore, Montefiore, NYU*, NYU, Wisconsin
Wow, there are so many top-qualified people who did not match. And unqualified people at top programs.
Are you judging people from the schools they went to? smh x4
I'm also judging by AOA status, no research year, and quite a few affirmative action picks.
wow, just wow x4
don't be a jackass, there is a lot that goes into it aside from AOA status med school and research year. research year doesn't necessarily correlate to how many publications you have either.
sounds like someone is butthurt x2
A research year is nowhere close to even being a requirement, you racist dumbass.
Yeah, in many parts of the country a research year is the exception unlike the Northeast and Cali where it is the rule.
Do you mean if you're trying to match into the NE or Cali or if you go to med school there?
If you go to med school there
not surprised to see how many people got in by inside connections...
Yes both familial and otherwise
what do you mean?
like Mount Sinai
If you go to school and are trying to match in the NE and Cali. What about Sinai? There is only one person listed on the match list there. The fact that that person did an away rotation? A lot of schools take people who do aways. That just seems like hard work not an inside connection.
You'd be wrong. There are those who did an away rotation there and didn't even get interviews.
To the person who asked about Mt. Sinai, it's pretty much closed to outsiders, for all intents and purposes.
One other person listed is a current research felllow, as usual
I, for one, am ridiculously excited about all of my coresidents. They were some of the nicest people I met on the interview trail, and that trumps qualifications any day. x 4
Me, too!! So happy to get people who aren't gunners and judging by the first comment my instincts were right in choosing my program rank order NOT by prestige. x2
So, based on an ethnic-sounding name, they must have gotten in because of their race not their qualifications? Vote for Trump much?
You're right, a URM at a bottom-tier school, not AOA, with like 1 case report, totally deserves to match into derm. Should bring a little more token color to the whiteness that is derm. Glad your "feels" are so omniscient. Now go back to your safe place, before you get triggered.
you don't know anything about these people, their scores, their qualifications, or how many publications they have. god i feel so sorry for the program that ended up with your sorry ass
Also, I don't even see that many 'ethnic' sounding names. I actually thought the opposite and would have liked to see more diversity.
AOA has a directory and research pubs are searchable, genius.
so you went through and made a list of all the ethnic sounding names and searched pubmed to see how many pubs they have and searched for them in the AOA directory? wow. and I'm the "genius"? get a life
You just said, "you don't know anything about these people, their scores, their qualifications, or how many publications they have", dumbshit. Their pubs are easily searchable in Researchgate as is AOA.
Can you read? I'm not disagreeing with that, I simply think it is extremely fucked up that your racist ass would look up the "ethnic sounding names" on researchgate and the AOA directory to prove to yourself that they only have one case report and aren't AOA. GET A LIFE
So you make the argument/question how can a person know x, y, z. I tell you how to see those things quite easily, and so you move the goalposts to something else, of how dare someone does that. You must be the affirmative action candidate who now has to justify that they deserve the spot. I pity you.
why being so mean? why so angry? I'm sorry if things didn't all work out the way you wanted to this application cycle :(
it's not so much "how dare someone do that" as "1)who the hell cares enough and has enough time on their hands to look up all the other applicants' pubs and AOA status and, if you didn't actually do that and are just ASSUMING that minorities matched just because of affirmative action 2)why the f would you make such a stereotypical and racist assumption. Hope that clarifies things for you. And no, I am not an URM candidate. I just feel like you are being a racist asshat and felt the need to let you know.
I matched, you idiot. It's a simple pointing out of fact, when everyone else is AOA, with pubs, etc.
nobody ever said you didn't match. again, can you read?
omg. wow, just wow. I feel so extremely bad for the program and patients that have to deal with this person. x4
Hey guys, I'm a derm resident, and I don't know what the argument above is (I don't care), but diversity/affirmative action/whatever you wish to call it, does play a role. On our list of applicants, we have certain things that what we call mitigating columns for things like being a URM, another degree - like getting a MD/PhD, etc. to where we don't focus as much on scores, AOA, etc. like we would for other applicants. I'm not sure if the program gets some type of gold star from the ACGME for successfully recruiting URMs or not, as we tend to already have pretty utopian liberal attendings to begin with. I'm not saying this is good or bad, in fact the URMs we've had were some of the nicest and kindest people in our program, but just thought I'd give some insight to those who say that it plays no role. It plays a role just like everything else.
White priviledge plays a role too.
Maybe take that up with your dermatology attendings who are all white. I'm sure you won't pansy out and will be happy to confront them with their white privilege to their face.
OK, I'll do that and you find a minority attending and tell them they don't deserve to be there. All I said was that white privilidge plays a role. I didnt define what that role is, but you seem smart enough to figure it out.
Any person who uses the term white privilege, microaggression, or any other SJW term deserves to be laughed out of any educational institution much less medicine, and their views completely discounted. You'd fit in perfectly with the special snowflakes at Yale undergrad.
Former Yale undergrad here, please dont judge us all by last fall.
thoughts on the chicago programs? other than NW obv
not great
NYC has a lot of great programs (NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Sinai), but Chicago really only has NW. There are much better programs in the Midwest compared to the other Chicago programs
Yeah, there are so much better Derm programs in the Midwest than in Chicago, i.e. Wash U, Indiana, etc.
and Minnesota, Mayo
But Chicago programs have Chicago itself going for them; rest of the midwest is meh
Is Chicago that great of a city (I've never been)?
I have lived in both, and personally would take Minneapolis/St. Paul over Chicago any day. what does Chicago have that MSP doesn't, besides a giant metal bean?
lake michicagn, amazing restaurants, mediocore chicks, shootings
MN lakes > lake michigan, the food is slightly better in Chicago (I'll give you that) but MN still has great restaurants. plus it is so much cleaner, less corrupt, has less traffic/crime, and better outdoor activities and bike trails
I'll echo that besides Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul is great, but so too is Madison. For university towns, Ann Arbor and Iowa City are nice (at least for three years). Not going to lie, Celeveland and St Louis are terrible
Agreed. Case and Cleveland Clinic were both excellent programs. Completely shitty as cities and terrible weather.
