Sentiment score: 6.2 / 10

Applicants view Mayo Rochester as a prestigious program with strong faculty support, research opportunities, and excellent facilities, but many are deterred by its isolated location in Rochester, MN and cold climate. The program receives a high volume of interview invites but also rejections, with mixed sentiment about whether it truly attracts top-tier candidates or if its prestige is somewhat overvalued relative to its geographic limitations.

everyone keeps saying Mayo is amazing and has hella great benefits but it seems like a lot of what other programs offer. Whats the hype?

#28662025–2026 DermFeb 21

i will give u perspective as someone who strongly considered mayo for med school - it is small-knit community and if you want to stay in mayo system, it will be easier to find job (MN/FL/AZ)

anyone else have awkward rochester interview? the first question asked was "tell me about yourself including any challenges in your upbringing" which felt like an invasive way to start...and practically every other room just asked "what is 1 thing i should know about you/your app/etc."

#26602025–2026 DermFeb 21

didn't have rochester but are you saying it was awkward because of the questions or the responses?

honestly thought Rochester was a very nice interview. Very sweet genuine people who seemed very happy in their program. Didn't know a ton about them coming in and I loved the interview

Yes they were all very nice and happy! Just thought the approach to questions was a bit unusual/offputting

Why does a city like Baltimore get so much hate but not Rochester, MN? There’s absolutely nothing in Rochester, it’s cold and in the middle of nowhere

#23532025–2026 DermFeb 21

You are more likely to die in Baltimore than Rochester? Baltimore is butt cheeks so I'd prefer Rochester (I'm for SoCal too)

Feb 21
0

Rochester is great for raising a family, good Suburbs, cute downtown, safe, and mayo is a literal gorgeous Cush hospital all connected by skyways and subways so you don't have to walk in the cold to get around most times (they didn't interview me but 100/100 times I'd pick roch and mayo over Baltimore/hopkins no comparison)

Feb 21
0

wait how likely to die and where like i feel like i'm a poor judge of the safety of baltimore. it's near the bottom of my RL right now antyway

Feb 21
0

you're not going to die in baltimore it's not that bad, but robberies happen and you need to be vigilant walking around

Feb 21
0

some of you guys never lived in a city and it shows lmfao. all cities have safe and not safe part of the city. same for baltimore

Feb 21
0

The level of unsafeness in Baltimore is wildly exaggerated by people who have never lived there. The best thing about Rochester is that Minneapolis is 2hrs away.

I spent a summer in Rochester and its a very small, tight knit city. not much to do but it feels pretty safe

If I want to do Mohs what would be the best programs to look into? Ik some "top" programs discourage/don't support students interested in it and it's a red flag to mention in interviews lol. Overall been told to look at programs with a fellowship associated with a residency but would be helpful to know of specific ones people have heard about that are supportive with high Mohs match rates

#24522024-2025 DermMar 16

Iowa, Mayo Rochester, Wisconsin (the best ones for Mohs and surgical and procedural training in general)

Mar 16
0

some of the best Mohs faculty in the country are at these programs and they have historically consistently high match rates and support

Mar 16
0

Top programs definitely support mohs fellowship as most of the people who get into mohs go to a relatively top program

Mar 16
0

i've heard for example programs like stanford, emory, and duke aren't supportive based on the name and shame/why I didn't rank higher so was curious if there programs known to be supportive

Mar 16
0

some of those you just listed aren't necessarily top derm programs, Emory is in the t15 and Stanford is consistently t5-t10 but Duke isn't t15 but more to your point Duke doesn't have a Mohs fellowship and notoriously some of these programs are more about complex med derm and have picky Mohs teaching faculty

What programs have nice workrooms/spaces in clinic? I feel like everytime I look up tours/videos on their instas a lot look like super small, old 90's office cubicles?? Or am I trippin (for example, just looked up Mayo Rochester on youtube, compared to the Mayo radiology workspace was super underwhelming)
