Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

5 entries

1. Very evident that this is a nepotism heavy program. They haven't taken their RY fellows in the past, so the program has a lot of pressure to match them. Highly favor PhD applicants, especially those from home, as you can tell from their resident roster that has 1 PhD every single year. The program coordinator was passive aggressive at times, and they handed out way too many away rotations when they knew from the beginning of the cycle who their picks were. This was evident because the interview attestation form was given out super late near the end of the cycle in February when most programs had you sign it before the interview day. No socials either, which is very rare for dermatology interviews that don't have second looks.

2. I enjoyed rotating here, but it's 100% a rotation mill. Sure, you'll get an interview from your rotation, but as many others have said on this spreadsheet UConn already knows who they want before interviewing. Don't waste your time if you're not a Quinnipac/UConn student, UConn research fellow, family friends with the program coordinator, or married to one of the residents

3. Unfortunately the rumors from the 2025-2026 spreadsheet are true. They already knew who they wanted prior to away rotators starting. They matched their internals (MD-PhD, two RYs and their fellow). They offer over 30+ away rotations and some in dermatopathology but it was clearly for show since they knew their rank list from their home and affiliate programs (fellows/Quinnipiac). I would be very cautious using an away here because it is based on nepotism. There is one very powerful faculty member at this institution that is very Pro-Trump and Pro-Zionist to the point where their scribe warns you beforehand working with them to not say anything and to let it happen. As a rotator I personally witnessed this faculty member get into a debate about politics while in the room with the patient who held an opposing view. There are no words to express the disappointment many rotators had for this away rotation seeing the match list prove these rumors true. Protect your feelings and do not trust this program to not match based on nepotism.

💬1. is the pro-trump pro-zionist a man or woman? I rotated here and didn't experience that lolol

💬1. is the pro-trump pro-zionist a man or woman? I rotated here and didn't experience that lolol > woman, incoming president of AAD lol

Thinking of backup plans if I don't match and wanted some insight 1) would be completing a TY/Prelim followed by a research fellowship at a program that has a strong track record of taking research fellows 2) delaying graduation by a couple semesters so I am allowed to do VSLO and complete 4-5 away rotations - I've heard several people do this route because when applying they are still classified as a medical student with is apparently better than an MD graduate? What is everyone's thoughts? Kinda feel like I am pigeon-holing myself into one program if I do the research fellow track but not sure if doing a ton of aways will help since I will be at those programs for a month or less... I also would like to add that I have 20+ pubmed indexed derm articles so research isn't my weakpoint, I think I excel clinically and basically was thinking having more facetime with programs would help if I reapply

#18202025–2026 DermFeb 21

I honestly think that it will be more beneficial for you to extend a year and do another degree like MPH or MBA, because realistically, in the time you're reapplying, they're going to wonder what changes you made to your initial application (obviously that is cost inefficient and not feasible for many people so take with a grain of salt)

Feb 21

> OP here, I ended up doing 2 aways (no home program) and only ended up with interviews at those two programs (one being UConn lol) so that's why I was considering extending graduation to do several more aways hoping they will turn into interviews if I don't match but yeah I'm concerned that it's a big risk to take since there's no guarantee I'll get 5-6 more aways as that's also a competitive process

Feb 21

where was your other away? If that program has a decent class size maybe you would be okay, all you need is 1 and do you have any strong connections to either aways

Feb 21
0

the other program has 7 spots so it's a bigger program, honestly not sure if I have a "strong relationship" with either program but I have worked with ppl at both institutions

Feb 21
0

7 spots is huge but I guess it depends how many internals that program has

Feb 21
0

the program is interviewing 70+ ppl and has a ton of rotators so idk ig we will see what happens but yeah that's why I am thinking of a backup plan

Feb 21

Is this UT Houston?

Feb 21

UConn is really ruining ppl with these courtesy interviews

Feb 21

ikr basically it's the same as having no interview - hearing all the UConn tea and lore doesn't make me feel any better

Feb 21

I guess the "bad year to apply" has to have some truth to it. Rip one away

Are prelim spots tied to derm interviews this year? i applied to mostly schools that i did not get a derm interview for and i know 1-2 schools that said they would only release prelims to folks that got derm interviews. trying to figure out if it makes sense to still reach out to these prelims for interviews even though i got denied derm II

#17992025–2026 DermFeb 21

got a Geisinger TY and didn't get Geisinger Derm. Don't think they're tied because other specialties need prelim/TY too

Feb 21

probably program dependent> thank you

I got rejected from UConn prelim in October got a UConn Derm interview in November and then the prelim gave me an invite lmaooo so I'm guessing maybe

im interviewing at uconn and do not know anything about the department (did not do an away, not home). what is this tea about?

#17682025–2026 DermFeb 21

tldr they have their 3-4 people

Feb 21
0

you guys wont know until match day bestie

Feb 21
0

> honestly tho I feel like this is being blown out of proportion. Every department has their "picks" and there's no guarantee that these "picks" will rank their program #1, that's how the match is - UConn is no different from most programs

Hi M3 here! Thinking about places to apply/rotate at. Has anyone done the UConn away? Is it worth rotating there and any advice?

#17622025–2026 DermFeb 21

just apply

Feb 21
0

apply to any away. You won't get the majority of them and just take what you can get. Why UConn specifically, if it's bc of the Mohs discussion, don't think about your aways —> match —> mohs like that right now.

Feb 21
0

I'm trying to pick aways that have a high chance of interviewing rotators, UConn is mid-tier on the east coast, and seems to interview most rotators so that's why I was considering it

Feb 21
0

Hi OP M3 here the discussion on the right seems kinda scary lmao, idk if I should apply or run away, hopefully next year isn't the same or worse!

Feb 21

I am someone being speculated about in this thread. I don't want this information out there. Please do not bring it back. I don't know if I will match at UConn despite this speculation.

who's the person that's not internal but worked with them? What school if true?

Feb 21

RYs + Quinippiac is seen as pseudo-internal

Feb 21

Qunnniooac almost exclusively matches at UConn and not considered in the internal pool nor true external. They have an advantage

Feb 21

yo why is all this tea coming out on a Tuesday night < UConn has a lot of tea and lore lolol

Any info on UConn starting a Mohs fellowship? Someone said that UConn probably won't take their own residents for the fellowship - anyone have more info on this??

#17532025–2026 DermFeb 21

I don't think any of this is confirmed, UConn has been trying to start one for a while, wouldn't count on it if you really want Mohs

Feb 21
0

Where did this info come from? Is it on their website?

Feb 21

they just retired the old mohs surgeon and brought in a new one last month

Feb 21
0

I heard from residents they are starting one

Feb 21

any info when?

Feb 21

possibly starting in 2026/27? I feel it will have something to do with the new Mohs surgeon

Feb 21

I don't think so - they have another Mohs surgeon who I believe would be running this

Feb 21
0

last I heard was that it's still not approved? (~2 mo ago)

Feb 21
0

yes still not approved, they thought theyd have one for this current cycle too - lot of faculty issues with CC Derm

Feb 21

PD told me it was approved but they couldn't open the position for this cycle
