Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

5 entries

1. Very evident that this is a nepotism heavy program. They haven't taken their RY fellows in the past, so the program has a lot of pressure to match them. Highly favor PhD applicants, especially those from home, as you can tell from their resident roster that has 1 PhD every single year. The program coordinator was passive aggressive at times, and they handed out way too many away rotations when they knew from the beginning of the cycle who their picks were. This was evident because the interview attestation form was given out super late near the end of the cycle in February when most programs had you sign it before the interview day. No socials either, which is very rare for dermatology interviews that don't have second looks.

2. I enjoyed rotating here, but it's 100% a rotation mill. Sure, you'll get an interview from your rotation, but as many others have said on this spreadsheet UConn already knows who they want before interviewing. Don't waste your time if you're not a Quinnipac/UConn student, UConn research fellow, family friends with the program coordinator, or married to one of the residents

3. Unfortunately the rumors from the 2025-2026 spreadsheet are true. They already knew who they wanted prior to away rotators starting. They matched their internals (MD-PhD, two RYs and their fellow). They offer over 30+ away rotations and some in dermatopathology but it was clearly for show since they knew their rank list from their home and affiliate programs (fellows/Quinnipiac). I would be very cautious using an away here because it is based on nepotism. There is one very powerful faculty member at this institution that is very Pro-Trump and Pro-Zionist to the point where their scribe warns you beforehand working with them to not say anything and to let it happen. As a rotator I personally witnessed this faculty member get into a debate about politics while in the room with the patient who held an opposing view. There are no words to express the disappointment many rotators had for this away rotation seeing the match list prove these rumors true. Protect your feelings and do not trust this program to not match based on nepotism.

💬1. is the pro-trump pro-zionist a man or woman? I rotated here and didn't experience that lolol

💬1. is the pro-trump pro-zionist a man or woman? I rotated here and didn't experience that lolol > woman, incoming president of AAD lol

Penn interview was so beyond ridiculous. You can tell they don't feel like they have to try to win us over because they are highly ranked. Truly got the nastiest vibes from them today. Dropped to bottom of my list.

Feb 21

I actually think UConn has an amazing program as someone who rotated there. They're catching a lot of heat this year but their attendings and education are top notch

Feb 21

their overall education is fine i think its just the way the program has protrayed itself this year (likely to aways on the sheet) has been less than fortunate.

Please don't delete since it's uconn related lol but what have people heard about the uconn prelim year, is it nice or workhorse etc...

it is workhorse. mostly matches IMGs if that tells u anything

Feb 21

did not get good vibes during the interview tbh

for those of you who interviewed for Penn's community engagement track, did you have separate interview rooms/meet faculties for that track or just regular 6 interview rooms?

#26102025–2026 DermFeb 21

If i had a nickel for every time the words UConn or Penn Community engagement track popped up on this page i wouldn't even need derm salary anymore

right click, show edit history, tab back to find the deleted material. I'm pasting the deleted content here: Replaced: "which programs do RTM calls???

Feb 21

none (not even the "low tier"/"niche" ones like University of Puerto Rico/St. Barnabas/St. Johns) etc. It never happens in derm. The only program that has a special "early" communication to an applicant regarding acceptance is University of Mississippi's Rural Track which the one applicant will hear back MONTHS before everyone else. That one spot is done outside of the match.

Current derm resident from the Northeast - can confirm derm residencies are terrified of recieving match violations and having a problem with the board. It may jeaporaize the program/its accredidation for the following year. " with "Anyone else completely exhausted and burnt out? Interviewing for advanced + prelim + TY is so tiring, extra props to those of you who dual applied. Our strongest soldiers. "

Feb 21

> people are saying that they received calls this year though? >> IF this somehow does happen, DO NOT tell any friends in medschool/others you have come acrss in your derm journey. This is a 1% chance occurence - don't blow it for you or the program. I would suggest you still rank YOUR top programs as you would have ranked originally (aka: pretend you never recieved that call).

Some people are lying to increase anxiety and fuck with you. It's very easy to make a claim on here and get a reaction.

idk what to tell you i got a call from APD saying i was ranked to match, im not trying to create anxiety just answering the question

Feb 21

what region if you feel comfortable?

Feb 21

UConn

Feb 21

lmao. This has to be a lie. If you know anything about the UConn leadership you know they follow APD guidelines to a T. They might have nepotism and favorites picked out but they don't break the rules.

Feb 21

As a home student, I find it VERY hard to believe the UConn APD would call someone saying they're RTM.

Feb 21

12 programs called me and the PDs have directly texted me to say they're ranking me #1 what do I do???? :'((((

Feb 21

you got 12? thats rookie numbers. try 28/28 man. << WTF no way this person is telling truth ??? 12 called u? < PGY-3 here. RTM still happens but at very few programs.

If I were to match at a research heavy (basic mostly) program when I am personally not interested in doing research beyond the bare minimum requirements, do you guys feel faculty/PD would hold it against me?

#25572025–2026 DermFeb 21

yes

Feb 21
0

yes was talking to someone who matched at a research heavy prgram as a phd but they're not interested in doing more research and they feel PRESSURE

Feb 21
0

I feel we may have talked to the same person!

Feb 21
0

what even are research heavy rpograms? i feel like every program I have interviewed at has said they don't care if residents do research

Feb 21

some programs have a research requirement to graduate

Feb 21

Feb 21

u hate to see it but uconn is one, its only 3 pubs tho

Feb 21

UCSD is notorious for being research heavy and placing a huge emphasis on it

Feb 21

def there are some programs the highly academic ones that do care that residents do research

Feb 21

which

Feb 21

most of the ones highly ranked by research funding care about it look at the doximity list ucsf, northwesterm, case, etc im too lazy to look up actual research reqs but case has one, UCSD has one idk

Feb 21

Can you just do a case report or find an eager med student and publish something simple for most of these requirements?

Feb 21

ask the residents man we dont know anything... we're in the same boat :/

Feb 21

Case is not research heavy at all

Feb 21

agree actually i don't think anyone is certain we're all hearing diff things bc i heard case was reserach heavy so i think person above is so right ask the residents!!> Case is research heavy. Has its own research group for med students and publishes constantly

Feb 21

the residents at UCSD said even though there is a reseach requirement, you can do the minimum if you're not interested in research

#24292025–2026 DermFeb 21

if I hear UConn one more time I'm gonna punch a wall lol

Feb 21
1

uconn aka program of the year> as a current student at UConn, I'm also tired of it lol.

Feb 21
0

as an away rotator and aware of low chance of matching at UConn, I definitely feel like all of the discourse over UConn is overblown. it's still a great program with some of the nicest faculty/residents you'd encounter, just unfortunate that this year has a lot of obvious cards stacked against rotators. every program has their own nepotism and political picks, its just not as obvious

Feb 21
0

100% agree. There isn't anything going on at UConn that isn't going on EVERYWHERE. It's just a interesting cohort of applicants from UConn this year.

Feb 21

why is uconn a meme on here...

#23922025–2026 DermFeb 21

they had a lot of rotators and i guess they had beans to spill

do you think programs that have finished interviews (like uconn) have finalized their rank lists already?? although I've heard uconn already has their nepo picks :( really loved the program, my interview, and my time there...

#23842025–2026 DermFeb 21

yes, they usually finalize shortly after the last interview

Feb 21
0

i have heard they (uconn) are finalized after the last interivew . Also heard that this is a really tough year to get into uconn re: #internals, RYs, and fellows (and probably the fabled nepotism)

Feb 21
0

as an away rotator, uconn has like 6 internals, 2 RY, 2 fellows, and then 1-2 people that have nepotism. goodluck in that bloodbath. itll come down to strength of connections at uconn this year

Feb 21
0

> isn’t that kind of a low # of internals? There are programs that have 15+ home students/RYs

Feb 21
0

this number does not include QU students which might be considered home. they also only have 4 spots

Feb 21
0

they also had 30+ rotators

Feb 21
0

no offense to people who take time off to do RYs/etc, but I feel like this giant backup of applicants from the last 1-3 years is going to kill derm for people who go straight through, like of course we're "less qualified" in some aspects compared to those who take them, but like, not everyone finds research fulfilling

Feb 21
0

will say my institution recommends against research years, unless you switched into derm late

Feb 21
0

there are definitely less research focused programs though, which are a better fit for non-RY applicants - not everyone is applying to or hoping to stay in academic programs

Feb 21
0

my research-heavy home program also recommends against them unless you decide late because you have to be very productive if you choose to take one

Feb 21
0

app trends are always changing, best to carve out an individualized path!

Feb 21
0

research years started more than 3 years ago. no need to blame students who do research for how competative the field is, or your own feelings of being less qualified. programs understand that there are many different paths to derm, and many different reasons for each path. PDs can prioritize what they're looking for, as can applicants

#23602025–2026 DermFeb 21

I think a lot of them aren't anymore. I know MedStar and Duke aren't doing them. UConn does not either. Northwestern is also not hosting one.

p sure their match rate for RY and fellows is <50% at this rate. pretty sad. and that lore abt them promising spots has 10000000% got to be true

Feb 21
0

what does this mean match rate for RY and fellows? aren't RYs and fellows the same thing for med students? also, how are you coming to this conclusion at <50%

Feb 21
0

Not OP RYs are people who have not graduated med school yet. Fellows have MDs. If you look at their past fellows or RYs, you can see many did not match derm or needed multiple years to match. Their 2022? RY did not match, A recent fellow did not match., i think 50%ish might be around accurate? Which is unfortunate because thats about the match rate for derm anyway
