❌1. Very evident that this is a nepotism heavy program. They haven't taken their RY fellows in the past, so the program has a lot of pressure to match them. Highly favor PhD applicants, especially those from home, as you can tell from their resident roster that has 1 PhD every single year. The program coordinator was passive aggressive at times, and they handed out way too many away rotations when they knew from the beginning of the cycle who their picks were. This was evident because the interview attestation form was given out super late near the end of the cycle in February when most programs had you sign it before the interview day. No socials either, which is very rare for dermatology interviews that don't have second looks.

Sure, you'll get an interview from your rotation, but as many others have said on this spreadsheet UConn already knows who they want before interviewing. Don't waste your time if you're not a Quinnipac/UConn student, UConn research fellow, family friends with the program coordinator, or married to one of the residents

They matched their internals (MD-PhD, two RYs and their fellow). They offer over 30+ away rotations and some in dermatopathology but it was clearly for show since they knew their rank list from their home and affiliate programs (fellows/Quinnipiac). I would be very cautious using an away here because it is based on nepotism. There is one very powerful faculty member at this institution that is very Pro-Trump and Pro-Zionist to the point where their scribe warns you beforehand working with them to not say anything and to let it happen. As a rotator I personally witnessed this faculty member get into a debate about politics while in the room with the patient who held an opposing view. There are no words to express the disappointment many rotators had for this away rotation seeing the match list prove these rumors true. Protect your feelings and do not trust this program to not match based on nepotism.
💬1. IM GLAD PEOPLE ARE CALLING THIS OUT. Look at any program's rank list year to year, internal applicants will always have a leg up at any institution provided that they are qualified and a good fit for the program. In past years UConn did not match its internals if it was not a good fit. You can look at this year's incoming PGY-2s, all but one came from different institutions across the country. Depends year to year, I don't think this trend is unique to UConn

none (not even the "low tier"/"niche" ones like University of Puerto Rico/St. Barnabas/St. Johns) etc. It never happens in derm. The only program that has a special "early" communication to an applicant regarding acceptance is University of Mississippi's Rural Track which the one applicant will hear back MONTHS before everyone else. That one spot is done outside of the match.

This is a 1% chance occurence - don't blow it for you or the program. I would suggest you still rank YOUR top programs as you would have ranked originally (aka: pretend you never recieved that call).

If I were to match at a research heavy (basic mostly) program when I am personally not interested in doing research beyond the bare minimum requirements, do you guys feel faculty/PD would hold it against me?

as an away rotator and aware of low chance of matching at UConn, I definitely feel like all of the discourse over UConn is overblown. it's still a great program with some of the nicest faculty/residents you'd encounter, just unfortunate that this year has a lot of obvious cards stacked against rotators. every program has their own nepotism and political picks, its just not as obvious

Not OP RYs are people who have not graduated med school yet. Fellows have MDs. If you look at their past fellows or RYs, you can see many did not match derm or needed multiple years to match. Their 2022? RY did not match, A recent fellow did not match., i think 50%ish might be around accurate? Which is unfortunate because thats about the match rate for derm anyway
