Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

3 entries

1. Interviewers were super nice and interviews were low-stress and conversational. Very well-rounded program with robust surgical, cosmetic, and medical dermatology exposure.

2. Honestly such a hidden gem, so underrated, despite it's location so much exposure to so many different aspects of derm both medical and procedural. Great people within the program! Really not sure how this program doesn't have more hype!

1. To be transparent the parking situation really does suck, you have to park far away then shuttle into the hospital. Not ideal when it's dark and cold. Also Iowa City and the surrounding towns give a nice college town vibe but definitely not for everyone!

Everytime I am feeling down about this process, I look up jobs posted recently and it gives me the boost to keep going lol< lmfao are you me? I do that too haha < looool me too! just saw a gig in iowa for 750k, i can definitely do this stress for that kinda $ for my efforts lol < the caveat is that that kind of number is usually from less desired locations. The median number for newly graduated attending in the private practice is around 300-400k, in the academic hospital mid 200k to early 300k (definitely MGH/PENN is exceptional) < fair but i mean, less desirable is relative. The entire midwest is probably considered less desirable by most people but places like st louis are fine for me. why anyone will live in NY and Cali for like 30-40% less pay in addition to the insane cost of living is beyond me < let them chase that prestige & sardine box lifestyle. More for the rest of us.<midwest is best coast

for anyone considering ranking Univ of Iowa high up for prelim, just saw this on prelim/TY page: "current prelim at Iowa, do not recommend--painfully exhausting, no time for research, even the electives are brutal and tiring. Highly suggest trying a different place, I feel like I didn't learn as much as I could have and was instead just tired for a full year"
