did anyone get an inappropriate question at USC?
idr getting an obviously inappropriate question, but what's an example of an inappropriate Q?
no, loved the interview day
Los Angeles, CA
✅1. offered financial assistance to anyone who felt they needed it since the interview was in person!
✅2. This interview was in person and it was very well run and enjoyable felt like all the faculty really wanted to get to know me and the residents were very friendly! seemed like they were all friends with each other and were very supportive of and kind to me and the other applicants during "breaks"/downtime between interviews. I really liked the PDs and chair too. this dept comes off like they are very invested in each of their residents so if I end up matching here I get the sense they will really value me
❌1. Maybe not a shame but as a reminder doing an away here does NOT guarantee you an interview you truly need to shine and standout to get one and at least 5 other MS4s are rotating with you
“the comment regarding nepotism needs to be deleted as this is not true. please check facts before you make accusations and defame the currently matched students.”
❌1. in person interview and did not offer financial assistance to those in need
❌2. Insane nepotism Just matched the daughter of one of the Keck affiliated dermatologists. Such a joke of a program

In person social at usc was totally fine! Nice to see yall there tbh
If you saw me there then you know what to do next time you see me
every co-applicant I spoke to was great no clue how they're gonna rank everyone
thoughts on USC?? < felt intense, i liked ucla bettter < questions were definitely hard. <very positive experience, awesome culture ?
great school with great residents! I'll be ranking them high!!
there were a couple interactions that had me legitimately laughing like quoting them to my friends afterwards. culture is great (from what I saw) and it seems that USC faculty have a knack of finding a great group of applicants personality-wise. seemed to vibe well with most. Harvard and USC are very good at picking cool people.
my classmate interviewed there and said it was all women applicants
facts
slayyyyy queens
where is a program to ensure I only have male applicants/residents?
Has anyone interviewed at the new USC TY year program? theres zero info on it online
all the interview slots start next week, so no one's interviewed for it yet i think
recently got interview for keck USC TY. anyone have info on this new program by chance?
it's new *shrug* and in LA..best bet is to talk to USC IM residents lol nm i think that's new too?> you'll be mainly at keck usc hospital (in boyle heights) and arcadia hospital (about 30 min away)
you couldnt pay me double salary to work near DTLA
it's a little stressful yuh

Anyone know how many interview invites usc released?
can we make a tab for rotation mills so future apps can be aware?
need a detailed aways tab
there is one
where
nvm found it!
I can't find it where?
it's far on the right under "aways 25-26"
uconn getting cooked already
never forget USC

should we make a list of places that assign interview dates for next year's applicants? like someone mentioned below that's an easy way to get a conflict
UVA, Penn, UConn, USC, lake granbury, northwestern peds derm, yale
I know the USC topic has been ranted on a lot already but I am new to the convo. I want to write to any M3s on this page. Do not rotate there lmao. The amount of work that rotation required... sheesh. I was giving it my all for 10-12 hour days (esp when inpatient), condescending attendings in some cases, and didn't get an interview. Cannot emphasize enough how negative of a rotation experience this was compared to my other aways
I enjoyed my rotation there honestly. I think people get frustrated putting in a lot of work to not get their ideal result. I think had you gotten an interview, you'd be feeling differently. But they can't interview everyone. The rotation itself was fine, (and as a derm PGY-2 (not at USC lol)), it was not as much work as derm residency is.
so you didn't rotate there this year.. you rotated there three years ago? things may be different now
people complain every single year about USC, this same discourse has been happening
gbi
I think the point is that outcome is not unimportant. And given that USC's odds of interview are a lot worse than other schools in combination with the amount of work, it may not be worth it for many people. This whole process is about matching. People don't mind working v hard if they are an actual derm resident doing derm residency lol vs being a MS4 working to get an II that will never come
my point is the II does come for plenty of people and may be worth it for some. Trying to give a balanced opinion to "cannot emphasize how negative of a rotation experience this was compared to my other aways"
but it is a fact that compared to some other institutions their conversatino rate of away rotator to ii is much lower. so if you're going to be an away rotator somewhere might as well be somewhere where you have better chances. this is a super important point everyone keeps trying to dismiss, when people are looking at where to apply for away rotations its super important to keep all of this in mind.

I'm kind of freaking out. I have 6 II's (one being my home program) but I received 0 interview from my aways. I'm worried that I'm going to be behind the 8 ball in every interview since programs tend to rank people they already know and have rotated with. How can I compete when all of the programs I'm interviewing with have like 15 away rotators they're interviewing and I'm just the random virtual guy?
if you did your aways in top institutions, I wouldn't worry about it because they are probably notorious for that. You got the interview for a reason!
OP I was a USC victim
I'm in a similar boat (I posted below about trying to get feedback from my aways). something I'm reminding myself is that every match list still has people who weren’t home or away students (maybe not the majority, but definitely there)
I also got no interviews from my aways. Have no home program. I have 3 interviews. Feeling absolutely heartbroken and lost.
that fact that you got 3 II from places you didn't have connections to through home/away is actually very impressive! a lot of us didn't get interviews outside of home/away so that must mean those programs were actually interested in you- i would own that
do you think getting an interview for a non signaled place is a good sign?
where
won't say the name but a place I have no connection to and outside of my geographic preference
Does anybody have any success stories matching at a place w/ no away?
plenty of people? Obviously?
so, yes? I need hope, dog
IDK because if you look at the match list.. so many were aways or home
current resident, matched somewhere with no away and no connections
were you surprised? Did you rank them higher than your aways, and did they give you any indication!

Stanford vs UCSF, UCLA vs USC? Thoughts?
UCSF all the way
based on what qualities?
UCSF
Stanford >>>> USC
UCLA
why is ucsf better?

Has anyone gotten an interview from ucla AND harbor-ucla or do people typically get one or the other?
this is possible, yes. especially if you did aways at both.
Oh absolutely, people get both! it’s not a ‘one or the other’ Hunger Games situation. UCLA and Harbor-UCLA aren’t fighting over a single soul in some dramatic showdown. Honestly, it’s more like them high-fiving each other in secret, like, ‘Yup, we both want them.’ So yes, you can totally end up with both interviews and feel like you’ve hacked the derm system
lol this sounds accurate; add in USC to that too. I have no idea what Kaiser LA is doing over there though

For any MS3s lurking, do not do an away at USC. I got screwed over and so did many others. I have been saying this for 2+ years... USC is one of the top rotation mills in all of dermatology. Your away is better spent elsewhere as they balance 4-6 away-students per month with a ton of internals.
what makes you feel that way?
i have a lower class rank and 25x step 2 and all my aways were competitive programs
you probably impressed them during your away, and they also probably liked your app so you should be proud of that! dont let imposter syndrome get the best of you

Wow so many ppl did an away + gold signaled USC and did not get II, is this typical or just this year???
USC is a notorious away rotation mill and is well known to not care if you've done an away or not. Also everyone is mastubatory for SoCal
I knew this going in but I always assume "I'll be different". Big regrets. Fuck those cocksuckers, and fuck me for thinking anything other than the median.
fr tho the amount of work we had to do on this rotation and ending up w/o even II is wildly sad..
you chose to rotate there knowing you most likely wouldn't get an interview? it's well-known information, it's not like it's a secret
what's the purpose of you putting them down? Stop being negative
because they knew what they were choosing to do and are now shocked and upset about a very predictable outcome
listen, I was a dumb slut and I'm dealing with the repercussions of being a dumb too confident slut. Hurts but backup plan! Seeing if I can just do intern year, finish STEP3 and then work for an insurance company hitting deny. Seems like easier money.
