✅1. I rotated here and honestly this was my favorite away – great culture, very nice PD/APD and faculty, and great vibes with the residents who were inviting and very happy overall. Well-rounded training with good mix of subspecialty clinics (rheum derm, cutaneous onc, peds, etc.), and this was echoed by the residents. They do very well in the fellowship match with the last 3 Mohs matches being at Harvard, UCSD, and UCLA. Dermpath was a weakness but I heard they were revamping and just got a heavy hitting new dermpath faculty there + other new faculty. Amazing location being in Boston, and also you get close interaction with the other Boston programs which is nice. I was initially concerned about the accreditation warning people were talking about, but it looks like in the newest ACGME data from 2026 they're fully accredited.

✅2. Echoing what was said above ^ Such a kind place and was my favorite away. I would be so happy to train here. Such a good group of people. Very well rounded program

So I really loved BU and want to rank it highly.... but am I really missing something with the 3 and all those old sdn posts and whatever. Residents didn't seem bothered by it and it doesnt seem like its required for everyone (i think they said only 2/5 were taking a position this past year)

Is BU only taking applicants for their 6 year program? Any 3 year positions? They are all 3 years positions, the later 3 are not really binding

If you want to take the risk of being blackballed by the program go ahead, but "I'll bring a lawyer" as a contingency plan probably isn't a good idea. The first 6 yr class is currently in their 2nd year of Derm residency.

Again, not enforceable whatsoever. Only affects you if you want to make half salary doing academics versus private practice. All VC funded private empires (dinosaurs selling their established practices) give no Fs if BU is salty about you leaving before doing your indentured servitude years are done.

And what if someone wants to work in academics but at another institution? Oh that's right, you'd be completely blackballed. Keep in mind that any state you go to, your derm program has to sign off on any licensing paperwork verifying residency completion for your medical license. Don't put it past a program to use a charge of "unprofessionalism" against you when they fill it out which then a state board could sanction you for it.

Is it really true Ann Arbor residents contracts have a non-compete?

A residency contract is pretty standard/same across the ACGME office for all residents across an institution for all specialties. I don't see how a non-compete would really be relevant in a residency training contract, since you're still in training.

A little dated but: https://hoaumich.org/contract/2013/, "In accordance with the American Council on Graduate Medical Education, no House Officer will be required to sign a non-competition guarantee. Additionally, no House Officer will be bound by such covenants signed prior to or during tenure as House Officer."

I've also heard there is a loophole in that if you fellowship after 3rd year technically, you don't have to come back to the mother ship

Incorrect. According to the website, they say you would do your subspecialty Derm fellowship and then come back to BU as faculty.

That's the crazy part -- even if you yourself are invested into an academic 3 program, they say that later if they are not able to accomodate hiring additional faculty, they'll just drop it & you're released after 3 years. Shouldn't that detail be ironed out BEFORE starting a program like this? Doesn't seem like much of an investment by the faculty into resident development.

So you're no longer a resident after your 3rd year of residency. There is no PGY 4, 5,6. You're essentially paid like an Assistant Professor BU Medicine faculty salary
