Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

2 entries

1. I rotated here and honestly this was my favorite away – great culture, very nice PD/APD and faculty, and great vibes with the residents who were inviting and very happy overall. Well-rounded training with good mix of subspecialty clinics (rheum derm, cutaneous onc, peds, etc.), and this was echoed by the residents. They do very well in the fellowship match with the last 3 Mohs matches being at Harvard, UCSD, and UCLA. Dermpath was a weakness but I heard they were revamping and just got a heavy hitting new dermpath faculty there + other new faculty. Amazing location being in Boston, and also you get close interaction with the other Boston programs which is nice. I was initially concerned about the accreditation warning people were talking about, but it looks like in the newest ACGME data from 2026 they're fully accredited.

2. Echoing what was said above ^ Such a kind place and was my favorite away. I would be so happy to train here. Such a good group of people. Very well rounded program

Anyone else with < 5 prelim invites? x2 Starting to freak out. How many do others have (not TY's, just IM prelims)?

#7832017-2018 DermMar 23

I applied to ~15 IM prelims- 1 invite

Mar 23
0

I applied to 29 IM prelims- 3 invites so far

Mar 23
0

Applied to 15 have 5 prelim invites but 4/5 are more community programs

Mar 23

For the people struggling to get invites, by any chance did you only apply to prelims that are considered "competitive" for whatever reason or did you mix it up and include community programs as well? I did not apply to community programs, all academic (that's why I applied to ~30)

Mar 23
0

applied to a mix of ~25 IM prelims in competitive location, 2 invites so far.

Mar 23
0

personally, I say dont freak out yet. My understanding is that you can email prelims when you get an advanced interview at a school and an "in the area" email -- if you dont have enough prelim interviews by Dec/Jan, I think many programs will make exceptions to their interview dates and accommodate you.

Mar 23
0

applied to 20-25 TY/prelim, at 9 interviews right now. I think I have been more fortunate than most

Mar 23
0

Our school IM chair told us not to stress, the invites will come. Especially since we're derm!

Mar 23

Anyone get prelim IM invites to BU, Medstar Washington Hospital Center, or Mount Auburn Hospital? If so were you internal or external? I Medstar washington prelim invite, external

Mar 23
0

I think boston med center sent invites, not that you still can't get one regardless

Mar 23
0

Mount Auburn, external x4

Mar 23
0

<-- what kind of stats?

Mar 23
0

so what is "enough" prelim invites after all? I was thinking 8 with some community programs i was interested in due to location should be enough?

Mar 23

Mt Auburn external invite here, step 1 240+, at Top 10 in NE region

Yeah, so like I was saying... BU is an amazing program - a true academic powerhouse! It also offers great benefits, including a competitive salary and comprehensive health insurance! Nothing bad to say about the BU derm program. Nothing to see here, folks...

What websites do you all frequently visit besides Reddit, Facebook, and this spreadsheet? Not sure what to do with all this free time while we wait

#7582017-2018 DermMar 23

check out the link to the right before the BU folks take it down again| already seen it and didn’t apply BU| I’m sure BU knows who this person is given that they said they had just interviewed there for a faculty position

Has BU been trolling again?

BU external, non rotator x5

#4462017-2018 DermMar 23

for people who got a BU invite did you actually do the supplemental essay and do you want to stay on for the 3 years of being an attending

Mar 23
0

I did the essay x3; I want to do 80-20 research, so it's appealing. I'm a little concerned about the rumors about the department culture though. x3

Mar 23
0

i rotated at BU and there are a lot of misconceptions about the department. In particular many of the previous posts regarding BU were related to a Professor who is no longer affiliated with the department. The Chair and the associate PD are awesome and incredibly supportive. My main reason for contributing to this posts is because I think the residents are awesome and I don't think the programs name should be tarnished b/c of one individual who has since left BU. Happy to address any concerns based on my experience. Posting anonymously b/c there were very few rotators overall at this program - we were sent a survey at the end and could see who else rotated there.

Nice try. http://www.bumc.bu.edu/derm/vincent-falanga-md-facp/

Mar 23

i don't think their website is up to date. I asked a resident if he's still there and they said "no". I also never saw him at grand rounds or in clinic so if he is around then his involvement in training is minimal.

Mar 23

This program offers outstanding training for a future in academic dermatology while providing our residents with a nationally competitive salary and benefits that include a comprehensive health insurance plan.

What exactly did this guy do? https://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/boston-university-and-the-6-year-program.1125973/

Mar 23

Why not go interview and form your own opinions of the program rather than continuing with this nonsense

Mar 23

<--- Amen.

Mar 23

BU secondary apps were real long. Guess all that went to waste

Mar 23

I don't think so. Personally i feel my secondary got me the interview

So .. what do people think about the Boston University program - any rotators from this year who can provide some insight?

#1512017-2018 DermMar 23

I really enjoyed it, I felt I got fantastic teaching and the residents were happy. Lots of support for research if you're into that.

Mar 23

Anybody get a clear consensus on if the BU 3 is binding? I got mixed info from the residents and seems like things are contuinally in flux...

#1252017-2018 DermMar 23

Bottom line is no one knows, because no one has gone through it. Residents told me that it can't be legally binding per ACGME rules so if you want to do private practice no one is going to care even if BU doesn't like it. The twist they didn't tell us before was that if you want to do a fellowship far away, then you have to do it after the second 3, not the first. They're implementing that as a new rule for our class

Mar 23
0

It is definitely binding

Mar 23

How is it binding?

RTM calls started today!

#1192017-2018 DermMar 23

From where?

Mar 23
0

Also curious as most programs have said they do not do this x2 \| RTM calls x2 (from a top 10 program) - previous spreadsheets show what programs have done RTM calls in the past (., ., ., Henry Ford, BU, etc) - Was it ., . or .?

Mar 23
0

Yale is also top 10 and outright told us at the interview that they would be making RTM calls.

Mar 23
0

not OP, but I already got a RTM call from a top 20 program this week.

Mar 23
0

WashU or Iowa?

Mar 23
0

I didn't interview at Iowa, but my friend said he got a call from them. Didnt seem like a RTM, just a hey, we think you would be a great fit, any questions? kind of call.

Mar 23
0

So you think Iowa called all of their interviewees and said "we think you'd be a great fit"? Or what exactly constitutes a RTM call? Do they have to explicitly say you are ranked to match?

Mar 23
0

. will make calls This year but as far as I can tell they haven't started

Mar 23
0

I think Iowa called everyone. Why do you think this?

Mar 23
0

Maybe Iowa is lonely.

Mar 23
0

I interviewed at Iowa and didnt get a call so.... x2 |

Mar 23
0

<<I'm also curious about this. It seems kind of early for this

Mar 23
0

Maybe it's ., they finished their interviews in mid December. Or Yale.

Mar 23
0

I got a call from Yale

Mar 23
0

Did they try to get a sense of where you ranked them?

Mar 23
0

When did you get the call from Yale? Did anyone get a call from .?

Mar 23

Thought maybe BU did Ranked highly emails LAST year, but heard nothing this year so far

Stanford RTM call

#332017-2018 DermMar 23

I'm pretty sure this said UCSF ranked-to-match earlier?

Mar 23
0

No it said Stanford. That troll (anonymous gopher) changed it to other things like UCSF and BU and I kept changing it back. I'm the OP.

Mar 23

This same troll has been doing that for weeks. He changed one of my posts from "UCSF" to "Kentucky" a few weeks ago.

Mar 23

A user claimed that he/she received a RTM call from Stanford. You can choose to believe it or not believe it. OP will refrain from commenting further due to vicious attacks from the first time it was posted.
