Fame & Shame

2025–2026 Derm

1 entry

1. Residents are on their own when it comes to studying for board exams and the program is sadly underresourced with no in-house dermpath. Have to share VA with other DC residency programs. Terrible salary that is not adjusted to high COL in DC.

Anyone interviewing at Howard know if there is a schedule for our interview timeslot or any specifics with how long and how many interviews there will be?- Not that I've seen I think each slot is 1 hour in duration but we dont have the details of who we will be interviewing with

Anyone do an away at georgetown or george washington? How was it? interested to know, both seem very low yield with regards to # of seats < and Howard? it seems like they usually take their own students...< I rotated at GW.. would not recommend. < why?

#6132022-2023 DermMar 21

gw has research fellows, georgetown doesnt < did you do an away rotation at either institution??? >> would it be worth doing an away at Georgetown, I cant find much info on it in the spreadsheets. < Georgetown wasn't accepting any away rotators this past year as there were many (~12) home students. Wouldn't recommend an away at Georgetown in general as there are not very many spots (~2, usually 2 this year there were 3) and usually the spots don't go to home students or away rotators.

To the point below: 1) programs that didn't happen to match any URM candidates didn't necessarily do so intentionally, the match is a 2-way process and not indicative of the population interviewed or the program's match order 2) Asians aren't URM lol when derm people say "increase diversity" this it not the population they're referring to (and I'm Asian)

#5782022-2023 DermMar 21

1. Most programs pick the applicants they want. Especially top tier ones. 2. I think they were making fun of the fact that someone said they're trying to make "asians extinct" when she still is taking plenty of Asians at her program lol << I mean she can't make every spot URM the way Howard University Derm can. < It's just funny that whenever diversity initiatives get mentioned, Asians get more upset about it than white people, even though whites are racist towards asians as well. That's what I was making fun of. < < Yes, black people are never racist towards Asians. (looks at all the people disproportionately committing violence against Asians)

True that this is a 2-way street. However the question is: why do URM people not rank those programs highly enough to match? This part matters a whole lot too - there are characteristics about specific programs that may be perceived as red flags for URM ultimately informing their ROL. I mean out of 10 (ten) spots in harvard this year, there is not a single Black person.

Mar 21

Right, and Harvard picks who they want (doubt they go past 15 on their ROL list). From what I've heard, Boston is a VERY hostile place for black people. << My guess is at the end of the day while Harvard may care about URM recruitment, it's not the #1 factor (nor should it be). Naturally if you're a highly qualified URM in terms of academics and grades w/many publications, the Derm academic faculty world will be eating out of the palm of your hand.

why is this sheet still so chaotic lmfao i just came to peep that match list> why do people see this discourse as a bad thing? It's better to let people get this stuff out, challenge each other, and learn from each other than hold these thoughts in?? People are thinking this stuff, I'd rather know it than not

#41262021-2022 DermMar 21

and with that one has to be prepared for responses from all sides> yeah! we shouldn't just shut stuff down because it's an argument. Arguments are like core to understanding the world and ourselves, this is a sheet you can exit out of if you want

Mar 21

agreed but we should be able to have respectful discourse and this tends to turn into ppl just talking about how URMs are getting undeserved opportunities. If thats what ppl want to express fine, but when ppl push back, that should not be shut down or invalidated either. Ppl make it seem like URMs are sitting around twiddling their thumbs and not also working their assess off

Mar 21

I agree completely. I think we can agree that the average derm applicant is a badass

Mar 21

becauase people are mad lol < so y'all think top programs interviewed the same 10 students our of the 50 or so that applied by luck? you don't think those 10 students wiped the floor with your white asses by working harder since they tend to also come from no name schools. you think this is all charity? LOOOOL< no they don't think that. I think very few people wipe the floor at all, we're all pretty competitive. > people are misunderstanding this as an attack on URMs. Literally it's a call to monitor the institutions making admissions decisions and make sure these proportions aren't insanely shifted. I'm sorry but there were talented URMs in previous cycles I'm sure and these programs didn't match 33%. In fact they were biased against URNs prob. But this app it seems shifts starkly the other way. I understand the forces that led to this but if it were to continue it would be weird for everyone >> lol ....what??

Mar 21
0

it was unfair this cycle, just facts

Mar 21
0

how is that weird? Just as you were right to say 0 to 10% URM is fucked it's also weird to have 0-10% ORM, when there are far more applicants from that pool at top places

Mar 21
0

it is easier to be competitive from northwestern compared to say howard. and btw most come from no name schools because harvard/penn etc until a black man was killed two years ago did not know that black people needed to be in med school too.

Mar 21
0

It's so reductionist to attribute a URMs success to the color of their skin.

Mar 21
0

surprise surprise - if you talk to enough URMs there are those with lower stats who match or match better than URMs with higher stats. derm is derm and its a tough match all around < imagine how shitty it must feel as a URM reading this spreadsheet and realizing these people who think you're not as capable as them are going to be your co-residents
