Yeah, in many parts of the country a research year is the exception unlike the Northeast and Cali where it is the rule.

If you go to school and are trying to match in the NE and Cali. What about Sinai? There is only one person listed on the match list there. The fact that that person did an away rotation? A lot of schools take people who do aways. That just seems like hard work not an inside connection.

To the person who asked about Mt. Sinai, it's pretty much closed to outsiders, for all intents and purposes.

I, for one, am ridiculously excited about all of my coresidents. They were some of the nicest people I met on the interview trail, and that trumps qualifications any day. x 4

AOA has a directory and research pubs are searchable, genius.

so you went through and made a list of all the ethnic sounding names and searched pubmed to see how many pubs they have and searched for them in the AOA directory? wow. and I'm the "genius"? get a life

it's not so much "how dare someone do that" as "1)who the hell cares enough and has enough time on their hands to look up all the other applicants' pubs and AOA status and, if you didn't actually do that and are just ASSUMING that minorities matched just because of affirmative action 2)why the f would you make such a stereotypical and racist assumption. Hey guys, I'm a derm resident, and I don't know what the argument above is (I don't care), but diversity/affirmative action/whatever you wish to call it, does play a role. On our list of applicants, we have certain things that what we call mitigating columns for things like being a URM, another degree - like getting a MD/PhD, etc. to where we don't focus as much on scores, AOA, etc. like we would for other applicants. I'm not sure if the program gets some type of gold star from the ACGME for successfully recruiting URMs or not, as we tend to already have pretty utopian liberal attendings to begin with. I'm not saying this is good or bad, in fact the URMs we've had were some of the nicest and kindest people in our program, but just thought I'd give some insight to those who say that it plays no role. It plays a role just like everything else.

Maybe take that up with your dermatology attendings who are all white. I'm sure you won't pansy out and will be happy to confront them with their white privilege to their face.

Any person who uses the term white privilege, microaggression, or any other SJW term deserves to be laughed out of any educational institution much less medicine, and their views completely discounted. You'd fit in perfectly with the special snowflakes at Yale undergrad.
