My goal is to match at yale... any tips for who to do an RY with to make this happen? I go to a T20

Those who rotated at Uab, why do you think they didn't interview a lot of away rotators? Spill the tea. << Well for starters, UAB is a really strong Dermatology program. They don't need to interview all rotators. Good candidates come to them in the application process. << this sounds like something written by an attending or resident < what makes Uab strong? why would you want to be a derm faculty there vs at Northwestern or UMich or UTSW or UMiami or UPenn or Yale even << You're shifting the goalposts and asking a different question w/regards to the caliber of Dermatology residency programs (how you choose residency programs when it comes to training you vs. how you choose residency programs where you want to go to be an academic faculty member are totally different questions). And to the person who wrote directly after me above, yes, I'm actually a PGY-4 Derm resident, but I wanted to give some perspective as someone now on the other side of the match process. It's somewhat hard to understand for Derm applicants while you'going through it, to see and evaluate derm programs in a methodical way until they get to the other side, where it makes a lot more sense. I'll admit that it's not ideal, when you're trying to decide as an MS-3 student, where exactly to rotate in Derm in MS-4 to maximize your chances of matching into Derm or at least receiving interviews from places that you have rotated.

Penn actually has a fair number of non-Ivy < Penn is not in the top tier because of this< penn is top tier because if you took the 5 most famous/well funded derms and they took their talents elsewhere the dept would still be a top dept. if you did the same to utsw, yale, hopkins, northwestern etc those dept rankings would take a huge dip

Did anyone get an eras email from Yale New Haven prelim IM today?

I'm guessing no one knows the exact answer to this, but if I signaled Yale and they seemed to have offered interviews only to signals on 11/7 (according to the spreadsheet) and I didn't get one, then I can assume they certainly won't want me compared to other applicants who didn't signal come 11/21? < lots of commens aobut yale, how is New Haven? would it be worth going to like Yale over UCLA? < I think it comes down to personal preferences like location, support systems nearby, etc. at that point, both are great programs

Similar to person below, I matched into my back-up of pediatrics. Does anyone know people who have done peds then derm residency? Do I need to do a prelim year again though? elite prestige nepotism is real, looking at stanford/harvard/yale etc makes me sad i never had a chance to begin with :'( < as someone who knows some of those people, trust me that you don't want to work with them LOL < the attendings at those programs or the residents at those programs are people we wouldn't want to work with?! this is the drama I live for! < Are people really shocked that top tier Derm programs are going to take people from top tier medical schools? (outside of those who are URM and those who took a year off and did a research year somewhere else at a top notch place)? how positive are we that UCSF is taking 5 clinical and 2 research? Also Yale is now 6 instead of 4-5? < 100% positive because of NRMP website

anyone know if UPMC prelim IM lets you convert to categorical? How about UC Irvine? < also Yale and Brown prelim IM pls help < yale only has one true prelim spot that they usually reserve for an advanced person so idk if its relevant but i have heard brown has in the past. < interesting ok thanks

Is a LOI to Yale a make it or break it situation? Do most of the residents that match there send one? < definitely can only help your chances of mathcing there < idk about make it or break it but yale cares about LOIs < they clearly don't care about LOIs based on last year's name and shame

"what do people think of the doximity rankings? are they useful at all? << Depends what your criteria are for filtering through programs. < at one point I thought they had actual criteria for the rankings, but apparently it's just alumni opinion? Or am I reading that wrong? Seems like a less than objective way to rank < It's all based on opinion. In the past, there have been a few publications that have attempted to rank programs based on NIH funding, faculty, residents, research output, etc (https://cdn.mdedge.com/files/s3fs-public/Document/September-2017/CT094100189_REV.pdf) but this is outdated now. From what I've been told, you've got the big powerhouses (NYU, Penn, UCSF, Harvard, Yale, Stanford), the great but not quite top programs (Emory, Northwestern, Sinai, Wake Forest, Johns Hopkins, Miami, UTSW), a bunch of solid programs that aren't particularly famous for research or anything but will still train you well and prepare you for a career, and then a few bottom tier programs that have been known to have issues (ie flagged by ACGME, residents don't match to fellowships, program closes midway through a year, etc) < is there anything more recent?"

Do programs have quotas for non-home students? There are so many competitive Penn, HMS, & Yale students applying this cycle that each of those programs could easily fill their residency spots with home students. < I see 4-5 HMS applicants from one of my interviews ehhh. I think some programs defintely love having them or ranking them high < especially when the faculty are alumns themselves < penn has an internal student quota of 2-3 < who are the same 4-5 HMS applicants?? < The same 5 at the Harvard interview < they nice?

anyone know if Yale has a thank you note policy? so many faculty haha < since we're on the topic, anyone else think lot of the Yale interviewers felt emotionless, I couldn't gauge how I was doing at all < hmm i felt this in some of the rooms but not all, i've heard alot of programs do this though

why don't more people not interviewing at yale and ucsf post here? we keep hearing about the same programs
