would you rather have all honors and 0 research, or 1-2 honors with 20+ pubs/research items??

#1502025–2026 DermFeb 21

Feel like it depends on all of the other factors of your application (Step score, mentors/letters, med school prestige, etc.) ofc having all honors and lots of research would be better than either so it's hard to compare those scenarios without looking at everything else

Feb 21
0

does med school prestige really matter if youre not planning on going to a t10 derm program? (in terms of MD applicants)

Feb 21
0

i'd rather have a well balanced app w some honors and some pubs, than all honors 0 pubs but thats me

Feb 21
0

med school prestige is factored more for certain programs (defintely lower on the list in terms of factors assessed), agree about having a more well-rounded app

Feb 21
0

>the neurotic 270+ step 2, all honors, 20+ research derm applicant is few and far between. Believe in yourself - not all applicants are perfect. theyre average :). Aim for as many honors as you feasibly can, handful of pubs, show people you're likeable. that'll take you farther than grades and research at the end of the day

I've heard of quite a few people with these stats, I think it's also important to consider mentors and who you know since that can influence one's chances of matching

Feb 21
0

agreed, and connections from away rotations make a huge difference in terms of "networking" as well. the loudest ones are the ones that have the best stats, but dont get into your head about it! > more good thoughts like this please, maybe we're all just delusional

Feb 21

also want to say, I feel on reddit and these spreadsheets, we tend to see people on the extremes in terms of stats and research while the "average" students who match tend to not put a bunch of stuff here making it seem like applicants are extraordinary

scores in 95% of cases, excluding the "top" programs which virtue signal about evaluating applicants holistically (looking at u UCSF). It's hilarious how they say they don't have cutoffs for board scores, but they magically end up matching residents with only the most insane stats >how do you know this info? They don't release stats publically, and UCSF seems to match many students who dont come from T5 programs.

Feb 21

Current R3/R4s come from: UCSD, UC Davis, UMich, UCSF, Hopkins, Emory, UCSF, Vandy, Northwestern, UCSF, Hopkins, UCSF, Penn. Idk seems pretty high ranking for programs (excluding the California bias)

Feb 21

You can also see what they tell their own students about required stats for matching (https://meded.ucsf.edu/student-services/specialty-information-and-advising#Dermatology), for example in their table "How important is each the following for admission to a competitive program?", where honors, AOA, and research are highly recommended

Is it worth signaling Emory if you didn't get an away?

#1352025–2026 DermFeb 21

if you look at residency explorer, they interview 25 ppl (majority of which are likely away rotators and internals), or roughly 3.7% of applicants, Of those who sent signals they interviewed 30% of those who sent gold signals and 2% of those who sent silver, I would probably not signal if I didn't get an away unless it's your top choice and you want to use a gold

Feb 21
0

Yes but they seem to heavily favor gold signals >all offers might not be out yet? lets not jump to conclusions </3

Feb 21

yeah my bad let me just not answer this very valid question lmfao> my thoughts are they are slowly giving out offers to see if anyone declines

Thanks, I'll just plan not to signal.

thoughts on Emory?

#1172025–2026 DermFeb 21

nobody getting an away there with the 600 apps lol but clearly a very popular program this year

Feb 21
0

wait, how do we know there's 600 apps for emory aways again? lol> word of mouth but completely unverfieid lol

Feb 21

it is verified lmao, I spoke to the Emory VSLO coordinator and she said there were thousands for all the Emory rotations and 600 for derm

Feb 21
0

you claiming it here = not verified

Feb 21

also reached reached out to Emory and they said there were 600 derm apps

Feb 21

dang, emory aways more competitive than interviews

Feb 21

others were speculating the numbers could be inflated (1 applicant who applied for 4 different months is seen as 4 different applications)> :)

rotation mill, don't take away rotators, may be worth getting a letter

Feb 21
0

agreed completely. the letter could be helpful. Even if you're from a top school, I'd still target aways at other good institutions with a better track record for IV aways

Feb 21

Are there any "top" schools that *aren't* rotation mills? It seems like none of the academic programs' aways mean anything for interviews

Any news about Emory? I heard theres 600 applications ._.

#792025–2026 DermFeb 21

looks like every derm applicant applied for an away at emory LOL

Feb 21

im wondering if this is inflated by the number of blocks people apply for...> i think yes.. if the avg person applies to 3-4 blocks but still a lot of applicants

Feb 21

thats crazy

Emory sent out rejections for aways.... is it safe to say good chance at acceptance if we didn't hear anything yet?

Is Stanford away worth it? If selected, are you highly considered (like Miami/Emory)?

#432025–2026 DermFeb 21

n=1, had an upperclassman do an away there but didn't get an interview, but they matched a T10 school anyways

Feb 21
0

Did an away there + gold, was told they'd "see me again" during interviews, no II. I still matched back in California at a "slightly" (I personally don't believe so after my away at Stanford) lower ranked program.

Feb 21
0

unfortuantely stanford used to have a reputation of giving a lot of IV to away rotators but this was maybe 3-4 years ago. Now, they interview <50% of people that do an away. Not worth it most likely, and whether or not you get an IV most likely wouldn't have been affected by whether you did an away.

Feb 21

would those probably not already be filled?

best derm research fellowships with guaranteed match?

#33842025–2026 DermMar 19

Tulane

Mar 19
0

> Tulane is only for those who interviewed there

Mar 19
0

duke, UAB, SLU, sinai, Emory, melanoma fellowship, penn

Mar 19
0

i don't agree Emory

Mar 19
0

also i wouldn't say any of these are guaranteed. it should be *highly increases* your chances of matching

Mar 19
0

also i would directly talk to the research fellows that are coming from these RYs. If the mentors are saying one thing, and RY fellows that matched are saying another about their experiences, I'd be wary. Don't forget that many applicants have home programs and other sources of networking/support that could have contributed in very meaningful positive ways.

Mar 19
0

also if mentors don't offer to connect you with past research fellows who have matched i'd take that as a red flag

Mar 19

If I want to do Mohs what would be the best programs to look into? Ik some "top" programs discourage/don't support students interested in it and it's a red flag to mention in interviews lol. Overall been told to look at programs with a fellowship associated with a residency but would be helpful to know of specific ones people have heard about that are supportive with high Mohs match rates

#24522024-2025 DermMar 16

Iowa, Mayo Rochester, Wisconsin (the best ones for Mohs and surgical and procedural training in general)

Mar 16
0

some of the best Mohs faculty in the country are at these programs and they have historically consistently high match rates and support

Mar 16
0

Top programs definitely support mohs fellowship as most of the people who get into mohs go to a relatively top program

Mar 16
0

i've heard for example programs like stanford, emory, and duke aren't supportive based on the name and shame/why I didn't rank higher so was curious if there programs known to be supportive

Mar 16
0

some of those you just listed aren't necessarily top derm programs, Emory is in the t15 and Stanford is consistently t5-t10 but Duke isn't t15 but more to your point Duke doesn't have a Mohs fellowship and notoriously some of these programs are more about complex med derm and have picky Mohs teaching faculty
