??? Harvard isn't the only school/hospital system in Boston.. also what else should boston people say when asked "where are you coming from?".. (I'm not even from Boston)x1< I think what he is saying people that say they "go to school in boston" are stuck up becuz they know Harvard is there and they trying to imply they go there. Bitches should just say they go to Tufts and not somewhere "in boston", its deliberate misleading, like when you on a blind date with a guy and kinda lie about some things to make him like you... same thing

#9602019-2020 DermMar 23

Umm, there's technically Tufts and BU as well x5

Harvard all the way, better research, excellent clinical training, incredible faculty mentorship and alumni network, could go on and on<<then why is NYU ranked higher

#7692019-2020 DermMar 23

good question; i would not place too much emphasis on rankings as they are liable to change and depend on a lot of factors that dont directly impact residents imo

Both are amazing places to train, but Harvard has the edge on research, while NYU has the edge on clinical training. Both of them are great at both things, of course, which is why they're both top programs. Cant go wrong with either, just depends which aspect you want a little more emphasis on.<any thoughts on which program is more amenable to someone who wants to do Mohs in the future?

Mar 23

definitely NOT NYU..

Dude, Harvard is Harvard. Enough said :)

Mar 23

y’all can have Harvard. Unless you have strictly academic goals I wouldn’t say it’s all that.

Mar 23

Idk I feel like the Harvard name is powerful, even if you want to go private. Not sure the average patient on the west coast has heard of NYU, but Harvard is instant cache anywhere <No arguments on the Harvard name, and maybe its my east coast bias showing, but I can't believe west coast people would not have heard of NYU ... <Agreed. NYU is the most applied to private university in the country... pretty sure name recognition/brand awareness is not an issue for them. Plus, anecdotally, as someone from the west coast, everyone I know has heard of the school and generally holds it in high regard.

there was a PGY-1 in the discord chat yesterday night Yesterday at 11:21 PM I was curious and counted w the sheet today since i just rediscovered the sheet, I would have had 10 at this point I matched my #1 Yesterday at 11:21 PM Nice I have 10 right now too so now i feel like absolute garbage :( *** For the record this was a TOP applicant who likely matched at Penn or Harvard. Stay in your lane. You’re doing just fine!!! << thank you, but i am also garbage for other reasons :) - meme

#2712019-2020 DermMar 23

< I really feel like having 10 at this point is an outlier more so than the norm. 10 is a very respectable number to have total in the end of the season, and there are some states that have barely come out yet (e.g. west coast) << yes that is true. according to stats page id say 4-5 is the average number based on respondents <that sounds more realistic, and I bet even that might be a little high if you factor response bias

<I'd been told before that going into thanksgiving with ~4 is a good position, but I am doubting that based on this sheet <don't << ? what do you mean, those of us with <4 are doing worse, or 4 is the good cutoff before thanksgiving because 50% of programs have released their interviews? <sorry, what I meant was that having 4 going into Thanksgiving is a good position and to not doubt that based on the sheet

Thank you <3 this is helpful. I recently made the decision to do similarly and I've been feeling conflicted. < could you elaborate a bit on what part of Harvard or Northwestern you didn't jive with? Facing the same (happy) problem right now.

#10832019-2020 DermMar 23

everyone gunning for MGH and posting "i ranked it last" to convince others to do the same. only way to game the system, kudos.

Mar 23

<it's derm, you can do anything you want with training at most places. Go with what makes you and your SO happy x2

Mar 23

Current PGY-1. Ranked places closer to family ahead of top tier programs because ultimatelymy SO and I decided that we would be happier at those programs and they would be more supportive of any career path. Make your ranklist however YOU want to and dont let people on a spreadsheet, Doximity rankings, prestige, etc tell you how to rank places. WWYD really doesnt matter because everyone and every situation is different

i really want to believe in the positivity of these messages but the cynic in me says it's just applicants fucking other applicants over.

Mar 23

OP: really not my intention. I just want to admit that I personally struggled and it feels WEIRD to look at these top programs lower on my list but it works for me and just wanted to put it out there because I know a lot of people are struggling with the same thought process.

Mar 23

also posted about this and definitely not trying to screw anyone over. I wanna be close to family

Mar 23

Also, on the flip side, I would argue that if name/prestige DOES matter to you, then rank it that way! This makes it seem like it's black and white, that you're sacrificing something to rank the top programs higher. But sometimes there's a reason why top programs are top!

Mar 23

Please don't rank NYU, thats my top.. kthxbi

Who actually considers northwestern top 5 is my question

No way

#12072019-2020 DermMar 23

disagree, i think it can be helpful to network at a top prelim (BI, BWH, etc.) -- Everything matters, but I doubt your fellowship application will be made or broken by your TY or Prelim

Mar 23
0

<Your prelim year does not matter at all. like at all.

Mar 23
0

that's what I needed to hear.

Mar 23
0

if you do something that's not a good fit for you and you burn out, or don't like the people you're with, you won't go into derm refreshed/happy and that can hurt, so basically prelim year matters TO YOU and do what YOU want, but yes to other people externally it doens't matter one bit

Honestly, it's smart. Why close the door until you're absolutely certain and interviews are done?

#6642019-2020 DermMar 23

terrible reputation. I will have nothing good to say about any program that doesn't send outright rejections. The most respected programs (Harvard, Stanford, UCSF, etc) do that for their applicants. << you would slam a program over that? Geez, hope you're not matching with me. There is nothing wrong whatsoever with keeping a larger waitlist. Some programs actually give the opportunity for second reviews of waitlist applications when they arise

Mar 23
0

meh, I must prefer less email spam. rejections suck because it's an extra notification that is useless. I would rather all programs ghost

Mar 23
0

I can’t really ask a mentor to reach out to a program that rejected me. Would much rather have silence and them be open to re-reviewing versus one random faculty completely closing the door on me.

y potnetial fellowhships care whether you do a prelim at harvard vs. a TY somewhere random?
