Can we discuss the nepotism in derm? Specifically, FAMILIAL nepotism. Is this really widespread?

it runs rampant. Know of people who have academic derms in their family and they got multiple IIs and matched, friends with basically identical CVs/step/pubs got fewer IIs and/or didnt match.

The tricky part is that the advise, we are all given is to play the connection game. Individuals with family members in derm just by default have connections (and can get more).

daughter of a Mohs surgeon -> def gonna match derm and get a derm fellowship, son of a derm PD-> def gonna match derm too (I know both these people, they aren't from this cycel)

I feel like I know of a couple med influencers from Howard who didn’t match. Seemed like Howard was only able to match 3 home students to their own program, and no where else

Wanted to see if anyone did an away at the following institutions and has heard anything about them: UCSD, Brown, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, UTSW
Rotated at UTSW and could not have had a more amazing experience. They offer 3 tracks: rheum derm, vulvar derm, and dermpath (this may have changed). All tracks give you experience at general Parkland clinics. Residents are a major, major strength of this program - they went out of their way to be welcoming and treat you as peers/equals. Faculty are some of the foremost experts in their respective fields. Tons of opportunities to see patients on your own, present, and write notes. Everyone has their own unique experience, but myself and my co-rotators did not experience ANY of the negative things highlighted in the shame tab. Dr. Mauskar specifically went out of her way to be welcoming and kind.
