Applied last year with a similar question... none that I know of personally out of all the MD programs. Its a match violation. Not even the "niche" programs like the two in Puerto Rico match outside the match (however they take 99% from PR with the exception of one student from Tufts last year). The one DO program that matches outside the match pretty consistently is St. John's Episcopal (3 residents per year). I wouldn't be surprised if other programs with 1 resident per year didn't already know who they were going to take prior to the cycle though, effectively providing an "outside the match hunch" to the applicant.

Of note Tulane does offer a research fellowship every 2 years starting after completion of an ACGME recognized TY/internship in Medicine or Surgery. It is reserved for 1 individual under Dr. Boh (the chair of the department). When you sign up it is with the understanding you are guaranteed into their program after two years of grinding papers. I remember there was someone at Sinai who was offered an out of match offer in February (this was back in 2022 i believe) and did not take it at insistence of Sinai's home department. I'm not sure if this story is true or not. I would imagine though that if a program did give someone an out of match offer, and the program would then withdraw from the match for that year. That would not make it a match violation, right?

anyone who is completing a residency with an advanced track can apply (like anesthesia, PM&R, rad onc, derm, etc)

people have said that they're moving to change what they've been doing, but in my opinion it feels maybe not worth it to apply without definitely knowing that they're going to change this year

From what I've been told on my away, they are considering people who aren't RY moreso this year and more objectivity in their rankings. However, I feel liike this means that it will only be a few spots. It's only going to be worth it if you have some connection to the program (aka you've worked with one of the faculty previously, your mentor knows someone pretty well, or you impressed on your away)

I personally wouldnt waste an app or signal on them if you arent a RY fellow, rotator or home student.

Schools that have secondaries: BU, U connecticut, U Iowa, Umiam (research track only), U Oklahoma, wash U (research track), Upenn has an optional one < iowa doesn't and WashU isn't offering researhc track this year

i got interviews at nyu, columbia, cornell with no nyc connections and no away and being from far away, did not get mt sinai. harvard does not take into account whether you did an away or not in their interview invites; i interviewed there as well

ya i was told not to really bother applying if I didn't do an away because all the interviews are pretty much given to home/away students

do we know what schools are more open with interviews? seems like most do very few other than home and aways

Hard to say, depends on if you did basic or clinical research. I'd just compare your productivity with your PI's other fellows or prior fellows to see where you stand

12 pubs in 1 year is ridiculous. unless ur PI is on the board of a journal it takes months for papers to get accepted

12+ if clinical, basic science isnt as much as clinical. have seen on average RY

Recently matched after a basic science RY. I had 1 major pub that barely got published in time for ERAS. Basic science papers take forever and people reading your app know that. Supplemented with case reports and review papers. As a side note: for those applying after taking a basic science RY, please please please carefully evaluate what programs you apply to. Most schools that don't value research will not view you as a great fit and you're less likely to get an interview. < adding on to this that if you have a bunch of pubs and applying somewhere where they don't value research / residents don't have a bunch of pubs - same thing, you wont be seen as a great fit to interview or take as a resident

does it? I recall the PD at Penn during the USC panel saying that anyone can say they "submitted" something so I'm worried they don't really value those

I was reffering to actual publications (not research items). Not saying it to scare anyone as I think research is just one part of your application in addition leadership, volunteering etc, so you can get in with less. Also basic science is dif very different from clinical. Just in my experience I have interacted with mentors that say 12-15+ . Just looking at Mayo, Mt Sinai, Albert Einstien, UM. California, Northwestern those are what some would consider productive
